deutsche (that would be german) telekom. and of course we didn't drive out. every first phone jack in the house (at least those installed by a tech or at least purchased at the telekom store) has a resistor installed in it that crosses the two wires. it does not affect line quality one bit, (i forget the resistance, but it is high) but it allows the switching equipment to run a test on the line for diagnostics. if that comes back within the parameters necessary for dsl, the customer in question gets a go. at one time those that were borderline could opt to get a slower package to get anything at all, but corp hq put an end to that citing billing and contract issues. blah.

your first priority should be cooling, not overclocking. and with a stock vendor box you need to upgrade that first.

replace the overpriced vaio with a custom box built for speed.

google.com hypertyhreading is the ability to reply to parallel forums, thereby creating a greater threadcount.

good morning. start it with an ugly dog.

i just thought of waking up with that thing greeting me in the morning by licking my face. -
it lets you attach yarn to a needle at damned near warp speed. but seriously. it makes the core of the cpu look like 2 to the os by creating two threads of tasks (like a board thread more or less) so if one is idle because it's weaiting for data from ram or hd the other can be processed. that's why the pentium extreme with 2 cores and ht looks like 4 cpu's to the os.

check out wrightline for the profile furniture. they have some nice custom configs with flat panel arms.

might want to try a large dl from microsoft, like one of the game demos, see what the speed evens out at.

carried awayu or not i have installed dsl at 768/128 at a cable length of 10.5k. and that was not terribly unusual, although we did measure each candidate individually for line quality at distances greater than 5km simply to avoid the embarassment of going out and setting it up only to find something wrong.

There's gotta be a catch to this processor..
resopalrabotnick replied to Indestructable's topic in General Discussion
no catch. it's the dual core pentium d with hyperthreading. name's a bit dramatic. only thing you could consider a catch is the 1000 dollar plus pricetag... -
oh please. settle down there. i would say it's a good thing if it was. i read the articles and saw the test results (in germany no less, which has a higher quality and for the lower voltage lines almost completely subterranean power grid that reduces some of the radio interference problems) long before it became fashionable to have high speed internet. the rage at the time was an isdn hookup or 34k dialup while the masses languished with their 28k modems. anyone at the time promising a faster internet was greeted as the new messia, yet Siemens couldn't pull the powerline thing off despite support from the major electrical suppliers. the reasons? all the ones given above. and if you choose to belittle the radio interference problem, ask a ham operator that has dsl rolled out in his area how much it ticks him off. amateur radio all of a sudden became a huge lobby when the german telekom (yes, it is spelled with a k) decided to roll out dsl to the masses. there are better ways to go than powerline, if you have power, more than likely you havew a phone, and dsl can reach as far if not further than that powerline stuff without many of the problems. all it needs is a dslam in the local switches. (the powerline is not magical either, it would need a massive technology investment as well. of course the people living out in the sticks won't get cable or dsl, but the chances that they would be able to get the powerline internet are just about as good. the fact that the sat-internet companies are in business in spite of all their shortcomings is not due to some miracle, merely to the fact that some people have no other choice.
-
what's strange about that? that's 6 km. on good lines 10 to 12 is possible easily.
-
look, it's simple math. under optimum conditions there is only so much high freq stuff you can put on a powerline, especially since you need to keep the amplitudes low to not mess with the real thing being transmitted, the ac current. so you've got these big clunky cables strung in a fashion that pays no attention whatsoever to signal degradation in anything approaching a high freq spectrum. i will give the benefit of the doubt and grant that they can use the different phased lines for parallel transmission. now you've got lines running parallel carrying a high freq signal with no mechanism in place that provides any kind of shielding between them. brilliant! oh, no, wait, that's idiotic. one transformer station serves lots of households, all of which receive the signal. so far so good. you can do ip transmission even, fine, so the neighbor doesnt get to see my pr0n downloads. ok. you've got this sexy modulator in the transformer taking care of transmission. then every hookup has a quote inexpensive device installed that also has to send data on this morass of high freq noise. sorry, but that;s just not gonna happen in any fashion. not to mention the article about the radio interference the fcc is atm not worried about because by then they are sure there will be newertechnologies to avoid that. mwahahahahahahaha NOT!

myriagon. your link doesn't even have a blurb about the speed. meaning they still havent gotten above a few mbps, otherwise they would be yelling about it. and splitting a few mbps with a few hundred that all want it because there is no dsl/cable, thanks, i'll stick to dialup.

dude, learn from new orleans, bug the hell out. -
8i discerned google secure connection that is so cool google internet based on the vpn topic. but that still leaves the question maybe so, and? not to mention that using a free third party vpn is like leaving your firewall off and posting your ip on hackmetillyoudrop.com.

the funny thing is the other store, (tiger) also has an 840 series pentium, but they say it is the pentium d. sans ht. and according to intel they actually have the pentium d series (dual core w/o HT) and the extreme edition. to my shock and awe, they carry the same series numbers for the corresponding speeds. http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentiumXE/index.htm http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentium_D/index.htm that is just begging to leave some customers befuddled, or mailorder customers ticked off because their vendor failed to properly distinguish between the ht, non ht 840's. are you using the intel 955 board?
-
one thing you can try, which may fry the drive as well, is low level formatting it if the bios offers that option.
-
pentium d with ht? isnt that the extreme edition?
