just make sure you have two nics in the linux box. one to the modem, one to the switch that distributes to the rest of the house. unless you also set up a mailserver and stuff on the linuxbox you are basically using a complete comp to emulate a 40 buck router. without the added ports for which you will need to get a switch even. but it's a good learning experience, especially about the sense and nonsense of using linux for anything else than a server os (which you would be doing) and you will have a lot more trouble setting it up than plug and praying an out of the box router. but that's just my $0.02. it's not that i don't like linux, i just don't like going out of my way to use it.
-
too lazy to look it up but if that router uses NAT you need to either turn it's dhcp on or give your comp a fixed ip. as long as the router then gets its ip from the modem all should be good. from your post it looks like the comp is asking the router for an ip... give it that same ip manually.

Problem when trying to install programs with more than one cd
resopalrabotnick replied to MttFrog13's topic in General Help
make a dir on your hdd. copy all files from all the cd's of a game/program into it, then run the setup from there. leave cd1 in the drive so it can detect it for the copy protection, although the install routines usually don't do this. that might solve your problems with the games, and will definitely take care of things for office apps. -

My ComCAST Speed Insane ??
resopalrabotnick replied to snowyLuv's topic in XFINITY (Comcast Cable Communications)
maybe he is just bloody fast. or maybe his machine is so slow that it caches slow enough to slip under the antiCache radar of the server. -
yes i did. star trek is the only example for the fantasy of working communism that came to mind. if you know a real world example of working communism, enlighten me. the post was simply to state that the guiding principles of communism are pretty good, as demonstrated by star trek.
-
communism would be a good thing if it worked. the federation in star trek is completely communist, for example. the problem is totalitarian regimes that operaste under the guise of communism.

i would thimk the usual. a bullet to the head and the bill to your relatives for the expense.

the problem goes deeper than that. it's not just other countries trying to gain an influence on the middle east. it's a cultural thing. radical islamists believe that playboy and other pr0n is a bad thing. fine. there's religious fanatics in the US and elsewhere that are on the same track. the main difference is that in the middle east the religious leaders use this to further their own power over the people by telling them pr0n is evil, the US has pr0n so the US is evil. They are skillful enough to brainwash their congregations into believing that slipping into a semtex bodysuit and making a shallow crater somewhere is a way to redeem themselves before god etc. if this sounds like the crusades held in the middle ages, well, you're not far off the mark. timewise this is the middle ages for islam. the only difference is that the knights of the round table didn't have WMD's to lob at each other. as long as western culture is exportet to the middle east and elsewhere where it's not appreciated, and you have to admit that american culture from cartoons to coca cola to sex drugs and rock 'n roll can be pretty overpowering, there will be people saying they don't like that. the problem is that with a lack of education that is present in some of the communities there the imams and other religious fanatics can pretty much control the facts. see this for an example: http://www.compfused.com/directlink/903/

sounds just as bad as linux as a desktop operating system. always scrounging around for updates, drivers, apps. ms, no worries.

What is the best/safest Anonymous Proxy?
resopalrabotnick replied to destructionfever's topic in General Help
well, yeah, you could become paranoid like that. but when you're using a tool written by someone that more or less obviously intends to make this tool available for shady purposes ( proxy checker, virus creation toolkit, trojan toolkit etc.) you have to think that this person is himself a more or less shady character that isn't above using the program he distributes for his own shady means. -
i did specify for the masses, and the masses use windows. all that you may see wrong with that, 2 billion users can't be wrong.
-
best browser for the masses? ie. why? it's free, it comes preinstalled on most boxes, it's easy to use and there is no need for the average user to download stuff for it, fiddle with it etc. beyond the occasional check on ms.com for updates, which you can even have it do automatically. and last but not least it's the most compatible because it /is/ the standard.

What is the best/safest Anonymous Proxy?
resopalrabotnick replied to destructionfever's topic in General Help
and you don't know if it transmits your info back to the author, and it can only check if the proxy is active, not if it does any good as a cloak. -
sure. you make the site, rent the server and i will collect the advertising revenue for you, so you don't have to worry about managing the money...
-
work for what? are you below your advertised speeds? if not, they aren't gonna speed you up any...

those estimates are spot on. once you carry the box out of the store, you depreciate 50 percent right there. the other 50 percent go away over the next 2 to 3 years. these are not houses or used cars people, these are mass produced items in a market with an incredible innovation speed. the initial prices (bought new) need to be relatively high for the mfr to recoup their r&d investment. hence the high depriciation.

why not use cable at school? or dsl for that matter. the kids are supposed to be looking up stuff online and not leaching pr0n, so the bandwidth is generally sufficient to be split.
