Sytem cleaner or optimizer? I need a good one!
resopalrabotnick replied to duffman1234's topic in General Help
not a joke. deadly serious. fragging system cleaners tend to target old files(at least what they thionk is old) and end up deleting archived data or program files you still need and all kinds of crap like that. once you tinkered with your box, reformat, install only what you need/want, and repeat as needed a few months from now. -
sound only coming from one speaker
resopalrabotnick replied to fattymcbluff's topic in Networking and Hardware
also check that any balance sliders in the volume control and or the soundcards utils are centered. remember some speakers, no idea what you have, are interconnected to a subwoofer or the like. check those lines as well. -

i'll take winace, thank you very much. does ace and all of the above formats as well. -
so why did you up the ante from kilo to mega? i wonder what the local isps would charge for a 768 mbps upload?

afaik php is a direcway customerr. 76.8 kbps would be a HUGE upgrade to his upload. as for like i said before, the isp balks at giving a high upload in basic packages because they do not want peope running servers on their cheapo packages. they say if you want to host shit, pay for the traffic. besides which running a game server might be an infringement of the isps policy if people pay to use it. check to be sure...

Need Some Help Setting Up A Wireless Connection
resopalrabotnick replied to al244's topic in Networking and Hardware
then the network key is the source of your trouble. when you connect to the encrypted network with your laptop it should ask you to enter it. try the following. set up the encryption (wep or wpa shouldn't matter) fire up the laptop, view available wireless networks by right clicking on tray icon or in the dialog for the wireless adapter. select your wireless network.which should be showing limited connectivity and click disconnect. refresh the list of networks and selkect your network, click connect and the dialog to enter key should come up. enter it and go. good luck. -

ok. just out of curiosity, did you enter the network key on the comp u were using to connect? and that is were wpa is actually better than wep, you get to think of a dandy passphrase. (like the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.) -

Need Some Help Setting Up A Wireless Connection
resopalrabotnick replied to al244's topic in Networking and Hardware
is it hooked up to the pc via cable? might be neccessary. also, there is usually an html config page on the router, for example 192.168.2.1, check the manual for the ip. try browsing there. it might not work yet though since the setup routine might need to set the password first time. follow all the steps described in the manual again, making sure you use the type of connection recommended etc. if that fails, holler back. good luck. -

accuracy of dl test.
resopalrabotnick replied to resopalrabotnick's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
cool. just trying to figure out the speed discrepancy between here and some dls off the web. -
when testing dl, i notice a delay between the progress bar reaching 100% and the appearance of the DONE! stamp. is this because of the transmission time of the last packet of the test to me then the transmission of my last ack packet and the transmission of the done to me? if so, how is the test measured, does the time start with the first packet sent or the first ack received? i get dls in the above 530k/sec range from microsoft at times, while my speedtest tops out usually around 470k. this could be explained by stated delay? if so, would changing the timing from rcv 1st to last ack packet be possible? otherwise, awesome site, take care!

If you run a speed test and the result seems wonderful, make sure it is not /way/ over your advertised speeds. if you're supposed to be getting 5 meg down and you hit 45 for example, chances are you have a cached result. while this may be entertaining to you as an oddity, or even to send to friends that don't know better, please be aware that pretty much all members on this site are aware of the possibility of cached test results. there is no point whatsoever in posting insane results and claiming they are real. if you must post them, do so in a context that inquires about methods of achieving a valid result. thank you. a concerned netizen.

you complained. the tech decided to screw you. he uncapped you, "forgot" to recap. bet he didn't make a note in the system. next week their lawyer is gonna come after you for uncapping their modem illegally.

just to clear up the facts, in case you consider them, dsl is distributed from the DSLAM (dsl access multiplexer) at your telco's local switch. the signal from the dslam, which btw has one port for every customer, is placed in the high freq band of your phoneline. hence: one port dslam to one phoneline = downgrade to allow more people to get dsl complete bullshit. not to mention breach of contract, which would resuilt in a lot of very expensive lewgal bullshit for the telco.
