Welcome to the forum zero10951. So you are sure it is clean, and you have cleaned it in safe mode with networking, with your Anti-Virus? By the way which AV are you using? Which firewall? Have you tried without your firewall on? The hissing noise, have you actually opened up the box and tried to locate where the noise is, or if you see any sparks? Microsoft advise that anyone with an earlier version (eg 1.0 or 1.0 SP2) should also upgrade.

"They tell me to reboot the modem, " I assume you mean unplugging the modem cable, not in the site 192.168.0.1? If not try unplugging the modem cable and touch with your finger at least 30 seconds. Also are you cleaning out your cache daily? Defragging files? I do all that before I even start surfing, it helps me even though some will say some is not necessary. By the way, www.example.com does not work for me either. Would you post a speed test using the 2992 file test? Also check to see if your system is properly grounded. And go up and see if your satelite nose has water in it.

What are your advertised speeds AnimaRytak? That is DSL, isn't it? Try a larger test file, say 1013. You did use the smart test did you not? And clean out your cache. -

My uneducated guess would be one is the speed you actually connect to the internet for a connection, and the second is the speed you transfer the information across the internet. Simpler for me would be like a drag car. The connection speed is the time it takes to get traction. The transfer speed being the time it takes to get all the way down the strip. Actually both very important to winning a race. -
Patience daycheck. Remember that over 1/2 of US is still using dial-up. You are already way ahead of the game.

Key words bit: minimum unit that handles a computer. (zero a one). byte: it is a set of 8 bits and represents a character. bps: (bit per seconds) unit of measurement of information transference. bytes/s: (bytes per seconds) unit of measurement of transference of information in byte per second (a CPS). 1024 bits = 1 kbits (kilo bit) 1024 bps (bits per second) = 1 kByte/s (kilo byte per second) 1024 bytes = 1 kb (kilo bytes) 1024 bytes/second = 1 kb/s (1 kb per second). 1024 kb = 1 mb (megabyte) 1024 kb/s = 1 mb/s (a megabyte per second) -
