  1. Maybe its the splitters at your house that are faulty or the cable that runs from the wall to the modem.. I had a problem with the splitters which caused my Internet to significantly go down in speeds and eventually stop working.. Tech guy came with a new modem but only replaced the splitter because that was the actual cause of the problem
  2. I have Rogers Express (3 down/384 up) and here's my test (from a bit outside of Toronto).. Those are my usual results (don't go any higher even with tweaks ): :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2821 Kbps about 2.8 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 344 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sun Dec 11 2005 22:06:18 GMT-0500 (Eastern Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 50X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.98 sec Diagnosis: 90% + Okay : running at 97.34 % of your hosts average (rogers.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-WO6UZBAQ3 :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 398 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Upload Speed is:: 49 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sun Dec 11 2005 22:10:42 GMT-0500 (Eastern Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 7X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 20.9 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 14.37 % faster than the average for host (rogers.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-NQ3DZ4JU8
  3. If its not the client pcs and connecting cables, maybe we can call this a paradox .. its not the OS, not spyware/antivirus, not router/cables, not internet service... This maybe another one of the Internet mysteries.. Hope you fix it though
  4. Have you tried switching connecting cables? That's rarely it but that's the last reason I can think of why your internet behaves that way.. Since the router worked and everything was fine before and you still are covered by warranty, best thing is to return the router for repair.. Maybe someone from the forum can think of other reasons for this unusual situation
  5. I just use http://www.arin.net/whois for whois searches
  6. You should scan for spyware/viruses because those nasties can slow down your internet... Anti-spyware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5 http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl& Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html http://housecall.trendmicro.com <- Online free virus scanner It could also be from your connection and as coknuck said you should try tweaking your internet connection.. Good luck
  7. better write it down next time.. i lost so many .rars that way too
  8. You should also scan for spyware/viruses because those nasties can slow down your internet too... Good luck
  9. just stick with what you have.. that's my advice.. think of it this way - its better than dial-up
  10. nice speeds .. welcome to the forum btw
  11. WinMX was shut down as other users said.. I don't believe its up again but go to http://www.portforward.com for port forwarding information for routers
  12. Total time logged in: 2 days, 23 hours and 54 minutes. Still going up
  13. try again directly connecting the internet modem to your computer (via USB or Ethernet) and see whether you get the same slow speeds.. If you get high speeds by connecting it directly, before you call them, change some of the cables connecting the modem to router and router to client pc's.. It may be faulty wires, but it could just as well be a faulty router.. Good luck
  14. There are free firewalls such as Zone Alarm Personal and Kerio Personal that watch out for attacks and then block them.. You have to set up rules for them (for what programs can have access to the internet), but after that setup its pretty much run in the background and sometimes edit the rules so new programs can access the Internet.. I do not bielieve you need all 3 firewalls (I only have 1software + 1 hardware in my router )
  15. I know this does not compare with the other posts, but its good enough for me :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2871 Kbps about 2.9 Mbps (tested with 7458 kB) Download Speed is:: 350 kB/s Tested From:: http://matrixau.net Test Time:: Bottom Line:: 51X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.93 sec Diagnosis: 90% + Okay : running at 99.1 % of your hosts average (rogers.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-VJ8U3WKFN
  16. try a different test mirror and clear your cache just in case
  17. hehe.. I got the new OS for the theme and now i want the older OS look
  18. As rammolo said, you can also use the SpeedGuide TCP Analyzer to see your connection settings and your maximum speeds (for my connection, it gave me pretty accurate results).. You can find it here.. Good luck
  19. I'll say for wireless those are exceptional speeds
