Give it some time, sometimes trunk lines go down or get overloaded... I've had bad routes before for that reason and always after a little time Cox will route me better. I should be reworking the mirrors very soon, maybe even today. I'll be opening free hosting accounts all over the country and various hot spots internationally... so you'll have an alternative testing source soon. -D

Test again, there was a problem with the code. -D

DOH, when I fixed the upload test I accidently forgot a line of code. It's working fine now, sorry everyone. -D
-
by the way... the information shown there is WAY off... the monthly traffic is says the site gets is just a little over what the site actually gets in one day. I wonder where/how they get their information. -D

The upload test has been fixed, sorry about that. -D

Okay, this has been fixed, sorry for the inconvenience. -D

I made a pretty cool update this morning. It gives users the ability to use any test sizes between 100kB and 100MB. I've added links to tests up to 100MB on the Download Test page but if you'd like to test with any other custom sizes you can do so by using the URL below... http://www.testmy.net/dl-55MB or http://www.testmy.net/dl-85943 < in kB Just change the bolded portion to whatever you'd like. I need a break right now but later on I'll be adding a form field (either a text box or a drop down menu that has 1-100MB listed, I'm not sure yet) where you can enter the test size you'd like. Enjoy! I told you guys I'd get a 100MB test online. -D

For some reason anything over 6MB won't work. It seems like the browser can't handle anything over 6MB with the method I've been using. So I've removed all the tests over 6MB and they will be readded once I do some rescripting to the upload test, which is on my to-do list... although there are some more important things ahead of that. But just about 99.98% of people out there will get very accurate results from sizes under 6MB anyway, You'll know when I get it fixed ~~ especially you Blunted, I'll make sure to tell you personally... I know that you have a sick ass connection and could really use those bigger upload tests. So I'll PM ya when it's fixed At least the larger DL tests are online, speaking of that, I'll have the 2 new largest tests online in the next few days.. topping out at 100MB later -D

I found testmy.net one day when I got cable internet before just about anyone in the world... there was pretty much nowhere that I could test my speed at so I built my own test. It was initially private but some search engine accidentally spidered the page. I started to noticed a ton of traffic going to that portion of my site so I started working on that portion of the site more... time passed and it grew and grew. Ended up branching off from my main site and becoming it's own thing. when the site first opened bandwidth was much more expensive than it is now so it actually hit a point where I couldn't afford to host it anymore... the thing is, I didn't start this site with the intention to make money... but when it got to the point where I couldn't afford the hosting I decided to put some ads up to cover the cost of hosting (there was stuff that happened before this, like for a little while I was donated a server from an ISP, then a server from a hosting company.... but the connections weren't to par with what my users had come to expect so I left them, even though they were free). I ended up having to go to the hospital to get my jaw wired shut because when the first days stats came in from my ads my jaw hit the floor... it had more than paid for the server in the first day, so in turn I ordered my users a much more powerful server... I figured that they had supported the site by supporting my advertisers so I owed it to them. I also kinda smacked myself for not putting the ads up sooner. Here I was, thinking that my idea was dead because hosting was too expensive, the site was down on and off for... man.. I don't know.. a looooooong time. testmy.net and it's various other domain names were blacklisted from every free web hosting site on the planet, I was even blacklisted from a bunch of pay hosting sites (not dedicated servers)... companies that claimed they offered unlimited bandwidth who then later emailed me saying "your site has been DELETED FROM OUR SERVER! Over 90% of our outbound traffic on our network is originating from your account! (of course in that case the 'company' was most likely just some dude with like 5 or 10 colo boxes in some larger hosting companies rack) -- I got sooooo many nasty letters and just about all the places that banned me did so without giving me any warning because once they noticed they wanted to put a stop to it ASAP because I was costing them a ton of money in bandwidth overages. -- Check this out... before I ended up putting the ads up to where I was able to get a dedicated box I did one thing that was scandalous. The only reason I can talk about it now is because it's been so many years. So check it out, I had a bandwidth issue. So what did I do to overcome the problem? i ran the site from one server... THEN I went out on the net and searched for large images, MP3s, misc files.. etc.. then I created a system that would rotate the information of each of those downloads. I had a list of hundreds so that I wasn't pulling highly noticeable bandwidth from any of them. So I pretty much used everyone else's bandwidth to run the site. It was for only a brief time though. Also, not only were there hundreds of downloads rotating for the test but also I was moving and adding new files at least every few days so that none of them stayed on the list too long. The problem with that test was that people never knew what test they would get, it would show them the test information before they clicked to start so some people would just refresh the page till they got a random test they liked, this test was only for the large test sizes, people on slow broadband or dial-up were able to test off TMN... but doing that little scam dropped the site bandwidth down to a manageable number... it was still many GB/month but at least it wasn't TB's -- oh yeah, when I was doing that i also provided links to all the sites that I 'borrowed' bandwidth from to give them some traffic for their 'support' -- I never had even one person complain about the site sucking them dry because the way I did it was very gentle on the host server. I could go on forever about the site history, it's been through so many phases over the years. And been through so many versions... it's been hacked a few times... it's been completely lost in a crash to where I had to rewrite everything from scratch (my personal hard drive happened to crash a few days before the server crashed so I had no backup, needless to say... I have many hard copies of the code these days). --- And it still has many more adventures yet to come, so stick around. So anyways... to answer your question... I found it on google... bah ha ha ha :haha: -- Hell, ya just might learn something!

If you would like to help with this vote please look at all the themes and pick the one that you like the best. One thing that is important is that you make your choice based not only the overall theme but also the color scheme because the new site design will most likely end up being based off the color scheme of the winner of this vote. If you like the default TMN theme, the GL series, please make sure you look at all the available colors to make sure you pick the one that you really like the best. What's the deal with this vote? Well, I'm going to be working up a completely new site design (and this will not just be a new theme by the way). The results from this vote, along with some other information I'll be gathering from users, leading up to the build, will give me a better idea about what the public things looks the best. So if you have time to vote it will be greatly appreciated. Remember, your vote on this poll (and hopefully you also participate in the subsequent polls that I'll be putting up soon that will gather more information I need from TMN users leading up to the build) will ultimately help decide what the site ends up looking like after this next redesign. - Thanks for your help, I hope you are all looking forward to the new design! - Damon Categories

Default
Misc
Holiday
'Dark Series'
'Plain Jane Series'
NOTE: If you have a hard time reading the selections below because you "can't scroll over" use THIS LINK to see the page in a new window. -Damon Default Themes GL Series (comes in RBGO&P) [preview] [Select From 5 Colors] Original Feel (old testmy.net theme) [preview] [use it] Misc Themes ekaf (artists site) - very cool, bloody [preview] [use it] Blue Black Box [preview] [use it] Greenhouse [preview] [use it] Holiday Themes America the Beautiful [preview] [use it] Halloween [preview] [use it] Two holiday themes I have no screenshot for at the moment are... Here's what I just now got Not my ultimate all time best score... but I think it's more than just pretty nice. This is with my 12/1 (w/ PowerBoost

Cool idea... shouldn't take me more than a couple minutes to script that up.. Give me a minute and I'll have it online. Thanks for the suggestion. -D

The new 12MB, 24MB and 48MB upload speed tests which were bugged are now working. Enjoy guys!

I'll be working on this bug either this evening or tomorrow. I'll make a thread in general discussion and a note will be added to the change log on the front page once I've fixed the bug. Thanks for letting me know -Damon

Okay, so you guys have been getting your notifications in the past 24-hours, since the new server has been live.. right? This new server is running sweeeeet. See, this is how the last server was supposed to be! But nooooooo, my host had to put me in the crappy datacenter and give me a headache and make me have to re-order to get the site to run the way that our users have come to expect from testmy.net. Having the server run the best that it's ever ran has taken a huge load off my back and has freed me up to finally work on some site updates that I've been wanting to start scripting for a long time. Enjoy guys! -Damon

I just wanted to let you all know that now that the brand new server is now online I will be adding the new 71MB and 95MB tests very soon. I will also be adding all of the tests over 24MB to the SmarTest feature. Currently the SmarTest feature is only forwarding people to a maximum of the 12MB test... but this will soon be corrected. Many updates are coming down the line now that the new server is now online... so keep your eyes open for the updates. Enjoy! - Damon

Okay, finally I got all the data transfered over to the new server. I've changed my DNS over to the new server so slowly everyone should start getting forwarded over to the new server. The IP address of the new server is 74.54.226.166 So if you want to see if you're on the new server you can go to the home page at http://www.testmy.net/ and if you see a message in red at the top of the page that will show that you're now on the new and improved server! You can also go to your command prompt (start, run, cmd or in vista start, then type 'cmd' in the search box at the bottom of the start menu) then type "ping testmy.net" -- it will show you the ip address that you have for testmy.net, if it shows as 74.54.226.166 then that means your DNS has updated to the new server. If it shows as anything else then you'll need to give it some time before DNS has propagated for your ISP. It can take up to 72 hours.... but these days that's VERY rare. Usually takes no more than a couple of hours... if it takes longer that means that you have some crappy, old school ISP... like "Jim Bob's Discount Satellite" (some dude who started a satellite ISP by hacking into an existing orbiting satellite... or he launched his own satellite by strapping 100,000 class D model rocket engines to a homemade satellite which consists of nothing more than a battery, an 802.11b router and a small solar panel... bah ha ha ha ha, that would be funny if that would actually work, huh. lol. Anyways, you all should be seeing the new server VERY soon... that is of course if you're not already seeing it Let me know what you guys think of the new server, and please let me know of any bugs you notice - Damon

My host finally got my new server online for us. It took them a while because the CPU I requested was out of stock. I really wish they did what they did last time and upgrade the CPU, I ordered a Dual-Core Xeon last time and they gave me a Quad-Core Xeon for the price of the Dual-Core. Although the CPU in the new server isn't as strong as the current server there are many additions to the new server that end up way more than making up for that.... First of all the new server has two times the RAM of the current server and is also running dual 146GB SCSI/SAS 10,000RPM drives. These two upgrades over the current server make a huge difference on a webserver that has as many database queries as testmy.net's does. The current server is running dual 7200 RPM 250GB SATA drives by the way... the SCSI/SAS drives on the new server are a nice upgrade. You may ask... "So why is testmy.net getting a new server again? I thought you guys just got a new server about a month ago!" A: testmy.net DID in fact get a new server a little over a month ago, the reason why I've ordered ANOTHER new server is because my host put the last server in a datacenter that I HATE. My host has multipule datacenters, some in Dallas and some in Houston. The Houston datacenter was one that they bought out from an old hosting company called "EV1". The quality of the EV1 datacenter is inferior when compared to the Dallas datacenter that testmy.net usually runs out of. So once I noticed that I was in that datacenter I knew right away that I'd be reordering very soon, though I did try to make the best of it. But despite hard efforts on my end I just couldn't do anything to improve the quality of the server and I tried everything to make the best of it until I could get another new server. Put it this way, although Dallas, TX is only about 240 miles from Houston, TX my personal ping to testmy.net when it's in the crappy datacenter is about 50ms (I just now pinged that and got an average of 52ms). I just now pinged the new server, which is now in the correct Dallas, TX datacenter and I got an average ping of 33ms. Pretty funny how the Houston datacenter pings 20ms higher when the Houston datacenter is only 100miles further from me than the Dallas datacenter, hahaha. If you'd like to see what I'm talking about... and actually, if you'd like to see if you've been effected over the past month from the terrible routing to this datacenter (because not everyone out there get bad routing to this datacenter) you can ping both servers and see the difference that you get... for fun, how about you guys post your personal pings to both servers... it will prove my point and show you all why i really needed to order ANOTHER server. The IP for the server in Houston (the current server that's being replaced) is :: 75.125.181.200 The IP for the server in Dallas (the server that will be replacing the current one) is :: 74.54.226.170 Ping both and share with us Here's mine ping 75.125.181.200 Pinging testmymobile.net [75.125.181.200] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 75.125.181.200: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=51 Reply from 75.125.181.200: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=51 Reply from 75.125.181.200: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=51 Reply from 75.125.181.200: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=51 Ping statistics for 75.125.181.200: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 51ms, Maximum = 56ms, Average = 52ms

ping 74.54.226.170 Pinging 74.54.226.170 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 74.54.226.170: bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=52 Reply from 74.54.226.170: bytes=32 time=32ms TTL=52 Reply from 74.54.226.170: bytes=32 time=33ms TTL=52 Reply from 74.54.226.170: bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=52 Ping statistics for 74.54.226.170: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 32ms, Maximum = 34ms, Average = 33ms You can also see a difference in the trace route tracert 75.125.181.200 Tracing route to testmy.net [75.125.181.200] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 7 ms 9 ms 6 ms ip68-2-6-5.ph.ph.cox.net [68.2.6.5] 4 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms 68.2.13.94 5 7 ms 9 ms 11 ms 68.2.13.9 6 8 ms 9 ms 8 ms 68.2.13.5 7 10 ms 11 ms 10 ms 68.2.13.1 8 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms chnddsrj01-ae2.0.rd.ph.cox.net [68.2.14.9] 9 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms langbbr01-ae0.r2.la.cox.net [68.1.0.232] 10 51 ms 52 ms 51 ms 216-54-253-2.ev1.net.demarc [216.54.253.2] 11 52 ms 51 ms 51 ms 216-54-253-2.ev1.net.demarc [216.54.253.2] 12 52 ms 53 ms 52 ms ivhou-207-218-223-126.ev1servers.net [207.218.22 3.126] 13 49 ms 49 ms 49 ms 75.125.181.200 Trace complete. And by the way... that is the cleanest trace route to the Houston server that I've ever had... the trace to that server is usually WAY worse than that. In conclusion, the new server is now online. I've already configured most of the custom stuff that I run on my servers and now I'll be starting the transfer of all the data. The new server is expected to be 100% functional within the next 24 hours but most likely sooner than that. This will mean upgraded speed and reliability for all TMN users. The new server configuration :: CPU :: Conroe Xeon 3060 (Dual Core) Memory (RAM) :: 4GB (4096MB) DDR2 800 Memory (HDD0) :: 146GB SCSI/SAS 10,000RPM Memory (HDD1) :: 146GB SCSI/SAS 10,000RPM Up-link :: 100Mbps up-link to theplanet's premier Dallas, TX datacenters this means access to over 100Gbps of tier1 bandwidth ( http://www.theplanet.com/tour/default.html ) So I'll let you guys know once you're on the new server, the first clue that you're on the new server will be a message you'll see on the homepage letting you know that you're on the new server. So give me a little bit of time to get the data transfered. Please note that during this process some posts to the forum MAY be lost, the reason being that the database along with the site data will be transfered and any posts made from that time to the time that it will take for me to change the DNS over to the new IP may be lost. In the past this has only resulted in a couple of posts being lost but I would like to let you all know this in advance. Please also note that the site may be slow to respond and/or throw errors during this process. This is because the amount of information being transfered is HUGE nad can sometime overload one or both of the servers (it's usually mySQL that overloads the server). Just keep in mind that the problems are temporary and this is why I do these transfers during off-peak hours in the middle of the night...... just hang in there, thanks for your patience during this process. Thanks for your patience during this process, I can't wait to see the new server in full action! -Damon

I know.. I know... many people have had connection issues since the change to the new server. This is due to the fact that my host put my new server in the wrong datacenter.... tomorrow I'll be ordering a new server and I'll be specifying to them what datacenter I NEED to be put on. The datacenter they put me on was a datacenter they bought out from an old company called EV1.... EV1 had nowhere near the standards that theplanet has, I was told not to worry about it (because I noticed that I waqs due to be put in the wrong datacenter even before the server was online)... they told me that they have spent a 'crpa load' of money upgrading that datacenter. ...... well obviously they haven't put enough into it because routing to this datacenter is a nightmare for most people. .. So anyways, this is going to cost me a little but it'll be worth it to get things back on track. I expect the new server to be provisioed in the next 48 hours and I should have all data transfered and have DNS propegated shortly thereafter. So sit tight, things will be running top notch for everyone again very VERY soon. My host happens to have a pretty cool deal right now where you get 2x bandwidth, RAM and HD space for about $50 extra a month. Right now I'm getting 2x BW for free but it'll be nice to have dbl RAM ad diskspace as well --- I'll keep you all posted -Damon
