I found a well written article on why you should upgrade your cable modem to DOCSIS 3. He also explains that TestMy.net's results were a more accurate benchmark that better reflected the actual speeds he was seeing. DOCSIS 3.0 Channel Bonding and You If you have a pre-DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and your connection speed is suffering, this might be exactly what you need to bring you up to speed. We've been telling people this for years... but this article does a good job of explaining why it helps. Again, another case where an Ookla speed test failed to provide real results... and TestMy.net worked as designed.

Oh yeah, I fixed it. I rebuilt the templates for 3.4.1 but I'll have to go through the admin side to enable some of the new stuff. I'm using KeyCaptcha for registrations now... Since I installed that spam has been pretty nonexistent. If you want to see that in action, log out and try to create a new account. Very cool, and you don't have to put it together perfectly... Just close.

I'm upgrading some elements to the templates to coincide with the upgrade to 3.4.1 ... something internal in IPB errored and locked the topicViewTemplate... so the forums are going to run the plain theme until Invision Staff gets in and fixes their end for me. TestMy.net's new home server is online. Most people will almost immediately be on this server. It's a monster. With 2000 Mbps of connectivity, 4 200MB SSD in RAID5 array, 16GB RAM, Dual Intel Xeon-SandyBridge E5-2620-HexCore (24 threads of processing). Intensive mySQL queries I've ran query 10X+ faster than the old server. Some things that were so intensive that they couldn't execute on the old server pop right up on the new server. It's amazingly quick. This means snappier response all around. The old server was starting to reach full load during peak hours. Still operating correctly and handling the job, plenty of bandwidth available on tap... but the CPU load was getting higher than I'd like. So I put a more powerful server online. Enjoy!

The CDN may not be ideal for everyone. There can be a bad route to any of those locations as easily as to any server. If you're seeing majorly decreased speeds I encourage you to try the other test locations... I know now why you and others might not be able to see the central.testmy.net server... I had the 3rd and 4th nameservers set to my old ns. I corrected this, you should be able to see that soon. By the way... I've got a really major addition I'm working on. I've got a brand new server up in what is considered by most to be the most powerful datacenter that Softlayer has. Dual Quad-Core (Xeon-SandyBridge E5-2620-HexCore) 16 GB RAM (split across 8 RAM slots)... 4 200GB SSD in RAID5 array... 2000 Mbps uplink. The current server is powerful but this new one is exponentially faster. RAID5 with those SSDs is VERY fast and reliable. Server is up and burnt in. I've just got a lot to setup and transfer... but I should have it ready for production VERY soon. Back to the CDN. I'm using what's called "Origin Pull". The CDN routes TestMy.net's DNS to the closest server to the user. It then relays the request. TestMy.net sends the request to the CDN and the CDN sends it to the user. Time is taken on the client-side so the fact that the request is being relayed doesn't effect the calculation. ... Some will see improved speeds with this method some won't, it's just another way to test. I may put the default server back to Texas, I still think that a longer route is a better benchmark. But the fact is, more and more content is being delivered this way. I was really impressed with the way that Cloudburst worked with my application. But I'm also working with Google's CDN and a few others to provide more testing options. What better way to test Internet performance than through the networks that are actually delivering the content... I just can't wait to get the new home server finished. It's a big process, I have to make very large database transfers quickly and get them switched on to the new server before I can even start setting the actual domain up. Otherwise more posts, signups and scores will be lost. I say more because there's going to be at least a little gap in the database transfer process. Most people won't notice, but there may be a 5-25 minute window of time that will get lost. But once the bandaid is ripped off it will be nice. Obviously once this is online I'll post.

Hi mrhuge, welcome! I see that your results to Seattle are better. Where are you? Try also selecting 'central' ... The default now routes through a CDN and you may get better or worse results with that method.

You want to change the file association. Here's an example for windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859 In the past you may have accidentally right clicked an exe file and gone to "open with >> notepad" --- you just need to disassociate it.

I'm using the automatic myself. It just helped me tune my wifi. Just today I got a wifi range extender and used TestMy.net on the auto route to fine tune the best location for it. Worked like a charm. The DNS may need to update for you. Ping central.testmy.net... once you can ping that you can test from that server. I should have waited for DNS to fully propagate before turning that on... but oh well. You can also try "dscacheutil -flushcache" from terminal on Mac to flush your DNS cache. (On Windows type "ipconfig /flushdns" in the command prompt).

Sorry, I should have put something there... Selection is now only at the top of the Speed Test pages. When you test with the default location now you are routed through one of 23 datacenters world wide. If you ping or run a traceroute to TestMy.net you'll now see that no matter where you are... you should have low latency. You can still select the server for troubleshooting but most will find that the distributed networking option will provide highly accurate results. See my traceroutes below. The home server has a 57 ms ping to me in Phoenix, after distribution it drops to 21 ms because it's being served closer. This is all done automatically. I believe the Internet will be served this way more and more in the future so I'm adopting the framework for TestMy.net. I have 4 other CDNs online, including one delivered by Google that was invitation only. But I haven't released them publicly yet. ... increasingly this is the way that your content is being delivered to you. So that's the way I'm going to deliver my tests. You'll see on the homepage... What makes TestMy.net Different? Routing Distribution Along side its own network of servers TestMy.net uses CloudFlare global network to provide this service as close to you as possible while still being outside of your Internet providers network. If you suspect a connection issue try testing from another location, this can help diagnose whether an issue is due to routing or if it has to do with your home network and/or computer itself. Select a test location at the top of any of the speed test pages. I've added some text where those server selection buttons used to be so that people aren't confused. Thanks for pointing that out.

I didn't notice that... ouch. That sucks. I notice that you tested to both the Dallas TX and Seattle WA servers. You should also try Washington D.C. ... even if it's further. See if you get around that same 10 Mbps... Where are you located? What's your OS and browser?

Ubuntu is great because there's a lot of support for it. Ubuntu will go down in history as the Linux district that made people take notice. But do you have a budget? If you do, you could get an old MacBook or Mac mini for a couple hundred bucks. Add a solid state drive and more memory later and even an old one will be contenders with some of the latest PC's. OSX is a great OS.

What package do you have with Windstream? I'm going to guess the 12 Mbps package, right? You get good speeds for the package you have, for sure.
