  1. Hi theelviscerator, you've met a BT member of staff also ?
  2. Gee thanks Tommie we have had centuries of the chips being down, to practice our humour , BT has been around a long time , purplemadboy, good luck , keep us posted , as I am looking to move up , although the engineers line test gives me a max of 2Mb ,and bt online check say's 8Mb and again wellcome to the forum , good to have another UK member as the membership is a little unbalanced ,at USA 29,997 UK 3 but I rekon we gotem on the run ! LOL
  3. if he /she is really good more like a if it's a female engineer , marry her
  4. Hi, I may be pointing out the obvious but is this message only going to new members ? if so why, just a thought , I am really sorry for them and hope they are not put off staying with the best forum on the web, IMHO Roco UK
  5. P.S. I love the BT stock reply "wait 10 days so that the system would settle down" more like, you might give up bothering us do they suspect it has got the flu, or something never seen one recover yet, and I have seen a few P.S. if you get a good BT engineer , offer him a cup of tea , they are worth their weight in gold , they do have some good'uns Roco UK
  6. Hi purplemadboy , welcome to the forum Don't cancel that BT engineer whatever you do , to get one out normally takes weeks and you have to have good proof that it is a line/exchange problem , as they allways say it is your puter that is at fault , I an guessing you upgraded from 2Mb to 8Mb both with BT, your BT line should have been tested before the upgrade , Bt tell me that I can have UP TO 8Mb also.but it is a sad fact my BT line will not support more than 2Mb what BT is saying is the exchange has been upgraded and can run 8Mb but only if your line supports that speed, there is a BT line test that you can do yourself , unofficially this is what the engineer will do , I got this info from a techie at my ISP, so my advice is let BT have a go first , purplemadboy do you know how old your phone line is , and how far from the exchange you live. as this can be very relavant to this problem from London I get within 3% of my quoted speed to TMN USA Regards Roco UK
  7. Hey guys , without starting a mine is better than yours war , can we not advise new members on the best free basic , antivirus , firewall and antispyware programs that are available , coz I can remember well, moving from 56k dial up to my pitiful BB , and being told YOU NEED A FIREWALL, WTF is a firewall I thought , so I stumbled around the web , and eventually found Sygate, for me, Grisoft antivirus has been great ( free ) Ewido antispy ( free ) Sygate firewall (free) CCleaner for tidying up (free) in my opinion a great starter pack, no doubt others will disagree, but that is fine, as long as they can produce a starter pack as well , and not just slag of a product , we are talking FREE programs , So don't mention Norton, even if it was free , I would not be happy if it lived closer than 2 blocks away from me , . Regards Roco UK
  8. Wellcome to the forum maxinnejr , I think widows Xp firewall is only incoming , not outgoing , I would not rely on it myself, "It should be noted that Windows Firewall is not as secure as MS would want you to believe since it does half the job a commercial firewall would do; which is to block both incoming and outgoing traffic. Windows Firewall only blocks or patrols incoming traffic and it can be easily turned off by another application, possibly a worm. " maxinnejr, there are good free firewalls out there , try gogling for them ,I personally use the old Sygate 5,5 , works well for me, but I am sure other members will recommend others also , but don't run 2 firewalls together, other free ones Kerio, outpost , zone alarm , I personally found zone alarm bought my laptop to a standstill , so is not one I would choose, outpost I have tried it was ok , but I find Sygate 5.5 easier Regards Roco UK
  9. Just a few test I have run in the past , https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 http://scan.sygatetech.com/ http://onlinecheck.emsisoft.com/en/ http://www.popuptest.com/ http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp all OK , I am using Sygate 5.5 free. for the past few years with no problems, I have turned Xp firewall off, as I have been lead to believe it was only a inbound firewall ?, no program or updater has auto permision to access the web without permision, apart from mail and browser well it works for me so far
  10. P.S. I am right behind Tommie Gorman's post comments , but not that close that we may get talked about

  17. Hi guys, its me again , LOL , just found a freebie on Nonags .com , iCarbon , for scanning (copy)direct to printer, easy set up and to use,and doe's just what I needed , works on all scanner/printers , it picked up on scanner drivers , that have been installed on my puter. and printers , easy to select correct ones ,and save settings , so who is a happy bunnie then ? :D thanks for the responce anyway , much appreciated Roco UK
  18. Hi guys thanks for the help, but, been there and dun that, Epson do not own the Epson Smart Panel , yes, they do the updates only , but from the link I traced the application to NEWSOFT in Germany , yes they will sell me the apli. for $11.00 as a download only ,all this hassle for a free scanner , just so I can use the copy button, I have never had this sort of problems with lost disks before ,with Umax, canon, agfa, etc so what started with good intentions to match my scanner and printer (Epson ) is beginning to fade also during my search I found many forum posts worldwide hinting the prog. was crap, and needed a uninstall apli to get it off again , So thanks , I think I will carry on useing my Canon Lide scanner , at least the aplications for it was free to download , Epson Rregards Roco UK
  19. Hi I have been given a Epson Perfection 1650 scanner , never used , I am using Win Xp and after installing the twain driver it works well in Xp , but I cant use the scan to printer option button without Epson's Smart Panel apli. ,any one got a link to where I can get this software , Noooo please dont point me to Epson been there done that, what a crap site , loads of mention of smart panel apli, but no clue as to how to get it , Roco UK
  20. have you tried "speed fan 4.28" for temp. measurements it works for me. it has a graph chart to record over time , I agree after noticing your post on bios and under clocking, my thoughts/ action on this if it was my puter, would be to set the bios to default, shut down, power off , remove the CMOS battery for 1/2 hour make a coffee, meditate, check all the cards , connections, and jumpers, put the Bat, back ( a new one would be a good idea ) fire up and check the bios settings , if that don't work , I would think about a new Mobo , have you got a spare puter ? you could test the various cards etc in , I keep a old Msi/Amd 1100 just for that reason , also to test programs on before committing my main puter , The usual disclaimer applies LOL if it goes wrong , I have emigrated regards Roco UK
  21. I am with you Cholla on this , AVG for me for the same reasons , but I don't use auto-update, as I have a very low end broadband and don't like things auto'ing in the middle of a download ,
  22. Hi how did we decide it is the power supply ?, you tilt the puter and it reboots INMO it has got to be a connection , also the temp of 22c , without a refrigerant system you cannot get lower than ambient temperature, even with water cooling , if your puter runs at ambient +10c you are doing ok
