  1. you are on 802.11b.. this is a throughput test on linksys' 802.11 access point My guess is the test results above were in ideal situtations.. line of site.. no interference.. Yeah I would guess that you are at the peak of the router.. I am not sure how much more 802.11g would get you.. or if it is worth the upgrade.. router and wi-fi card.. You could do a site survey and make sure that on other routers in the general area are on the same channel.. change the channel just to try it... WEP/WPA does impact speed!! but you need to have one of them unless you life in an area where you are out on a large plot of land.. Other than that.. I think you should be happy! this is the same test only with the Linksys WRT54GS the 802.11g router..
  2. I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.. I just reformated a friends computer.. tested here.. he ran 1456kbs.. Downloaded TCP and now he runs 2300... his service is throught purdue.. and is rated at 1.5/256.. now I think it helps below 3.0..
  3. no is was wide centrino based.. i will find the article.. http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBR/tip8600/rh8672.htm it was something like that.. accept at the time there was not newer intel m driver.. Here is a nice little article why windows sp2 is the "service pack from hell" http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/software/os/0,39024180,39172103,00.htm
  4. try TCP Optimizer.. that does just about the same thing as Cable nut.. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2104.html
  5. ok first of all my dell... if I install SP2 on my dell it has problems just booting.. something in the SP2 software doesnt like Centrino based stuff... Second, there wasnt any thing all that great in SP2.. Wow a program to monitor what is being updated and a few fixes.. which i guess were really holes.. That is why you turn on the automatic update for your virus protection and firewall..?!?! I dont see the advantage of slowing down your system with something that you dont need... Yes you can disable services.. that will help some what but not everyone wants to run around in the service manager and stop them all, you know that they are all running....
  6. amen to that!! 2000pro was a great operating system!! basically the same as XP with out the extra fluff!!
  7. I might be able to.. I scored 27000 last night.. give me some time to get my tweaks straight and the network traffic to die down, damn movie downloading people....
  8. For a tracert... Start-> Run-> type "cmd" no ""-> then "tracert testmy.net" exactly.. then post the results.. 9. As far as I can remember smoothwall degrades internet proformance... I remember telling someone to remove it.. they did and their speed went back up.. Here is how I would do it... Phone Socket>ADSL Filter>Modem>Firewall computer (connected by USB)->Switch->Desktop.. This way you have room to expand and you dont have to worry about crossover.. My guess is that your ping is going to increase a little bit when it hits the second computer... but other than that it should work just fine..
  10. That is fairly normall my guess is that you are at the max of the throughput for the wireless end.. the other thing that you could try is to run TCP optimizer for the wireless client.. that might help a little bit..
  11. a little more tweaking. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 19275 Kbps about 19.3 Mbps (tested with 12160 KB) Download Speed is:: 2353 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Mon Jan 31 2005 22:41:10 GMT-0500 (US Eastern Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 344X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.44 sec Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-VFM6EHTW8
  12. Microwave and Van Burren know this internet stuff pretty well... I am more hardware stuff... Here is after running TCP Optimizer.. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 11955 Kbps about 12 Mbps (tested with 12160 KB) Download Speed is:: 1459 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Mon Jan 31 2005 21:01:41 GMT-0500 (US Eastern Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 213X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.7 sec Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-QPTUGY568 before 7800... I am at Purdue on a "100mb" line or so they claim.. But i doubt it...

    help please

well seeing that AOL i believe owns Netscape.. I wouldnt be suprised if they disabled IE for some reason.. Do your other computers run AOL 9? Do they have the same problems with IE and AOL9?
  15. I am not sure it would be a firmware issue.. if it just started happening.. My guess is that it would be the ISP's end.. the way that we could tell is the response time from the comptuer to the router and then the modem.. But a firmware upgrade might be in the next step!
  16. messing with comcast is a pain in the ass.. I had some many techs out there before they installed the signal booster.. My signal was too weak to transmit things... They would say that they are coming out and then never show up.. Finally I got a manager that told me if they didnt show up i would be refunded for 6 months of access.. Of course they showed up.. Either way just be nice and they will fix you up..
  17. you might want to try a tracert to the ISP's website when it is really slow and then when it is really fast.. then post them... we might be able to help you from there..
  18. Hey great to have you on board AlmostHuman!! I hope that you can get all of your questions answered...
  19. that is odd that it is slow for a while then it pick up.. have you tried a direct connect via ethernet?? Otherwise I would recommend that you power cycle your router..
  20. that is the dumbest thing I have ever seen!!!
  21. yeah you can uninstall it assuming that you chose the option to back everything up before install the damn thing.. I am very anti sp2... you dont need it if you are running the right things and take care of your computer like a ferrari..
  22. well i guess you are just really lucky or you dont know that you have been hacked.. Zone alarm, PC-cillin, there are a bunch out there..
  23. my guess would be a hijack of some sort.. maybe a tojan.. I dont know for sure but i will look into it later..
  24. I agree with Van Burren.. dont download the patch.. too risky... Run a firewall and good anti-virus and you should be ok.. Microsoft's firewall doesnt count!
  25. Well some russians, thank you god for the russian!!!, anaylists have found a huge holes in Microsofts latestest and greatest service pack (SP2)... Just to let you know this service pack had more delays, budget problems, and cause havoc at Microsoft.. They were pulling people off the Longhorn project, the next great installment of the Windows operation system, to finish the freaking thing. They "wanted" to make sure that the firewall and other protection apps were as good as they could be.. Well that failed!! Half of the business world doesnt run the damn thing because it causes huge problems with other programs. and degrades system proformance on many name brand systems.. due to the OEM copy of the os... Either way there is a problem and here is what they have to say about it... "We found two small flaws that a programmer could use to go around the SP2 mechanism Data Execution Protection (DEP)," said Positive Technologies Chief Technology Officer Yury Maximov on Monday. So there you have it.. want to read more.. click here
