  1. Hey was reading some news and found that the I-Pod's battery only lasts about 18 months. I also found that there was a lawsuit filed against Apple to correct the problem. Then I found this website http://ipodsdirtysecret.com/. It is a movie it shows a guy running around NYC spray painting a message to all I-Pod users. Just thought it was funny.
  2. WOW Under $600 with a 2500+??? I will give it go. Here is what I came up with from NCIX: 1.44 MB High Density Floppy Drive $10.80 KEYMOUSE PS/2 2 BUTTON MOUSE W/ SCROLL WHEEL 700DPI $6.99 GENERIC COMPACT PS/2 KEYBOARD $5.25 SONY CRX225E 52X/24X/52X E-IDE INT CD-RW W/ SW OEM $49.92 ABIT NF7-M SOCKETA NFORCE2 DUAL DDR AGP 5PCI ATA133 VIDEO SOUND LAN $144.52 AOPEN 17IN QF50A MID-TOWER CASE BLACK 300W W/ FRONT USB & SOUND $59.34 MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX PLUS 8 30GB 7200RPM 2MB ATA133 W/ FDB $76.16 AMD ATHLON XP 2200+ 256K 266FSB SOCKET A RETAIL BOX *3YR. MFR. WARRANTY* $110.01 IMPRESSION 17IN .27 1280X1024 L.R. OSD $132.24 GENERIC 256MB PC2700 DDR333 184PIN $65.79 TOTAL $661.02 Reasons for the downgrades: First there is no why you are going to be able to build a 2500+ system for under $600. I choose the new mobo because with the old one you would have to buy a sperate graphic card. This one has an intergrated MX440 which can play some games but it was also cheaper then buying the other board + a graphic card. Everything else is just self explanitory. Nothing real impressing. You still need speakers and an os.
  3. Yeah that is it. Now my com is not set up correctly for a 56k connection right now. Read that artical that I linked to in the other post. On the bottom there is a bunch of stuff for tweaking these settings.
  4. The CyberSURFR modem is not DOCSIS compatible! This modem was released before this standard was put into place. This was the original modem from the @home network thoughout the US. However, when comcast took over it was mandated that everyone have a DOCSIS compatible modem. Your ISP will eventually require you to switch to a new modem. If you are smart find a way that either they pay for it, cause you have a modem, or get it for free due to rebates. I would recommend the Motorola 5100 Surfboard modem. It is pretty much the standard for most cable high speed internet access. I know that COMCAST uses Motorola for all new customers. That is what if found.... Good Luck! 5. Ok it turn out that the program you want is cablenut for this app. Just enter the values into the respected boxes and you should be set. If you want a more accurate recieve window look at some of the articals that deal with rwin and tweaking connections. I dont think that this will help that much seeing that these numbers are based on an ideal setup. Most people will never experience 53.5 k much less any faster. Make sure that you have your motherboard and your com ports set to their max(s). You might also want to try a different browser!! Modzilla now known as Firefox is great for 56k users!! Just play around with this stuff!! Remember to back up you regestry before you start! Good Luck!!
  6. Yeah i will look into it today! I know there is a program that will allow you to enter the values in a screen... just dont remember the name right now.
  7. cablenut.... Ok as far as tweaking the connection itself you might want to check out this website http://www.tweakxp.com/tweak2080.aspx. It has a bunch of setting that should improve the stability and speed of the 56k connection. I have not tried any of these tweaks so I have no idea if they work or not. Good luck! Let us know what happens! If you are on AOL dont even waste your time with this artical!! It will not help!
  8. Sweet!! Is the server going to texas or somewhere else??
  9. Try power cycling your modem!! You might get the updated packet that raises the cap.
  10. yeah local companies that offer dial up service
  11. Lorne and I have been investigating the possibilities for this chip... It turns out that this chip, PIII 550, was designed to be test to its max to find the limit before Intel changed manufacturing technologies!!! Just wait there is one more trick up Lorne's sleeve!!! You will be amazed at what the processor will do... The speed you see now is nothing!
  12. it is going to be your dial up service with the problem.... No questions asked. Try a local service for a month and see what the ping times are going to be.. they might lower but you will not see much of an improvement in online gaming...dial up is just to slow to.
  13. I think that local service is the best! Most of the smaller services dont have many people on them so they are faster then say AOL... However, they dont have all the cool little extras. Local can run between $10-20 per month. You also might be limited on how much time you have online.
  14. you can network you PCs with out a internet connection. If you want to share an internet connection then you are going to want to have a broadband connection. I am almost willing to be that your phone company has a dsl package that you can get. Unless you are out of the area for the Central Office. If that is the case satelite might be the only way to go for under $150 per month. Just check out what is local and what is available from the cable company and phone company.

ok it doesnt seem that any "speed tweaks" are making any difference. I have found that most of the things that I have done has made the speed go down but it was stable. I ran this just a few minutes ago 8:03 pm central ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 4324 Kbps about 4.3 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is: 528 KB/sec Auth Code: 2064861 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 77 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 1.94 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?ta=&top=&num=2064861&kbps=4324&gen=gen&a=3.42857142857143&b=0.571428571428571&c=1145.14285714286
