  1. right but i think the server cards are a bit more..
  2. one reason is that Maxtor took over their business at some point.. as did IBM? the only thing that I can find references to are the KA series.. which were available 6.4-18.2 gb on the 7200rpm and ATA66 If you can give me a part num or even check to make sure that it is a KT drive that would help a lot! http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/documentation/quantum_overview/fireball_plus_ka_overview.pdf
  3. it is true.. http://onmac.net/ it was finished about a month ago..

Had one in high school the year before i got there 1999... It was over the passing of a bill to build another high school in the same district..
  5. yeah.. it is still not main stream yet.. but it will be shortly, i think.. http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/10/31/sata_spells_trouble_for_scsi_raid/index.html good little article of what manufactures are coming up with these days.. My guess would be that is a bit more expensive than SCSI right now..
  6. welcome to the server sound club.. yes there is nothing like hearing a server room..
  7. yeah wd-40 might not be the best thing for it.. replacing the fan is good.. just be careful and dont use to much force!
  8. lorne.. This is what I have... it is a 2U rackmount.. Here is what I did.. check ebay.. I got this case.. http://www.cidesign.com/product_detail.jsp?productID=18 It has the SCSI backplane.. but I am currently not using it as I have no need or the money for SCSI drives at the moment. The other thing that you might consider is looking into Sata.. the industry is moving that direction on most of the 1u servers due to improved data rates and reduced clutter inside the case. The only problem.. these cases cost between $300-800 and cidesign doesnt sell to the public If you are going to be putting stress of any type on this system dont go 1u.. the heat from the hard drives and processor is going to lead to an early failure and that mean a trip or paid support time at $100+ per hour to get it back running. As far as building one.. if you have stuff laying around.. by all means hit up ebay and find a case.. then throw the board and stuff into the case.. If you do go 1U you are going to have to get a new low profile heatsink.. However, if you decide to go build I would buy instead. That way if something does go wrong you dont have to play the blame game. Right now dell is running a special on their 2U 2850 servers.. You can get a 2.8 xeon, 1024mb of ram, 3 year next business day onsite, 73GB Ultra 320 SCSI, dual onboard nic, no os.. for $1,253.00 (US) they are running 34% off right now.. The other thing you might want to think about doing is mirroring the co-lo box so that you have a test environment.. When you are remote hosting a box that is completly under you control, messing it up will be an expensive adventure. Unlike dedicated.. where there are techs can throw a new ghost on and get you back up and running. So if you do decided to go co-lo and sent out a server, I would highly suggest building a test box so that you have something to fiddle with before moving the new program/patch/or what ever on to the production box. One other think about co-lo.. 99% of the companies are not going to install the box on to their racks for your. Which means a trip with the box in hand to the location. I would also suggest getting some mounting hardware, server rails, just to be safe. If you have any questions.. you know where i am..
  9. wow.. that is going to be awesome! July 27th 2007... that kinda sucks..
  10. yeah.. that is what happens when you rush an OS to make some money off the name..
  11. i remember seeing a price for this.. i think extremetech ran an article on this a while back.. where they bought one and tried it out.. I will have to see if i can find it..
  12. Yeah... so about me.. I am a college student at Purdue University. I am majoring in Computer and Information Technology. I have interned at Abbott Laboratories with their WAN team. Quite an experience! Other than that I am into the network/server side of things. I also swim for Purdue, hence the user name, and am currently looking for summer employment.. I have been here since Dec of 2003 the same day that I got my Comcast cable internet. I guess my strength is consumer networking equipment.. When I finish college I would like to either work for the government, CIA/FBI/DHS, or work for a large company. In my spare time, which I have little of, I enjoy video games, hanging out with my CIT buddies, and playing other sports.
  13. I would also concure on just about everything listed here.. I have owned a BFG 5500OC and loved it! I have ordered a sapphire 9800pro 128mb card. You are going to pay more for a Nvidia/ATI named card directly from the manufacture. What these companies do, like Fat_phil stated, is take the GPU, manufacture the PCB, the physical card, and then sell it. Sometimes you can get additional features that are not included on the original cards released by ATI/Nvidia..
  14. yeah.. and make sure you request a refund/compensation for the time that you have been down.. also run a few tracert so that you can give them some helpful info.. Look for high ping times on their equipment.. before it hits the backbone!
  15. not a huge supprise.. That is what you get when you abuse your equipment and the ISP.. My guess is that there is some type of fine involved if the police and FBI are called.
  16. umm... one thing that I noticed.. was that mac filtering was hit or miss.. make sure that you install the software before installing the card.. this sometime will cause stuff like this to happen.. if it does uninstall the device from device manager.. than install the software and drivers.
  17. already posted..http://www.testmy.net/articles/article-543 I see his point.. but at the same time this guy must not download anything.. If their network cant support 15mb then how can they offer T3 and OC/DS products to companies?
  18. yeah i can bet that.. it is really hard to find any of the older linksys versions because Linksys put on a promo to move them off the shelves.. However, I got my in dec at walmart. I was there yesterday and there were about 10 or so left and the rest were the newer ones that can not be used... Glad you are enjoying it! There is tons there for you to mess around with believe me..
  19. yes.. that look right.. i just saw that post.. go with that.
  20. No you bring up a good point.. tweaking a connection doesnt always work for people.. Yes, some of us live and die by the speed of our connection.. For the most part you will never see a difference between 1.5 and a T3(45mbps) when websurfing normal sites.. There just isnt that much data being tranfered. However, start throwing in java, flash, graphics, and other doodads.. Then you will see a slight advantage.. The most important thing is the route to the server. If it is clean, no routers with really high ping times, then for the most part you internet experience should be a good one.
  21. my guess is that you are going to brick it.. and that will be the end of that router..
