  1. This one's an AMD Phenom II X4 810 2.60G with a built in HDTV tuner. Added a lighted keyboard and a Logitech Trackball mouse. Now I just have to figure out how to do the two screen issue. Just connected the HDMI port to a 32" TV screen. I see both displays and I can drag Media Center to the TV, but if I go full screen, I can't get the mouse back to the 19" monitor to do other things. TV is tagged Display 1 and the 19" monitor is tagged Display 2 for some reason even though the monitor is the default. As far as software goes, I've installed some really old programs; stuff written in the late 90s for Win98 and they run fine.
  2. Just bluffed my way through adding a second HDD. Been a long time since I did it and couldn't remember why the Drive wouldn't show up in Explorer. The I found Computer Management and started to remember a few steps. I now have Drive J: showing. Does that make me a 'puter geek? So, 2 1TB HDDs and 8Gb or RAM should let me do quite a bit, eh?
  3. Just got it. Wandering around, trying to find my way. Not too bad so far. Is there a "Power Toys" like there was for XP and other versions, or do the Gadgets take the place of it?

  5. I'll have to look in the logs. Haven't checked there yet. It will boot into SafeMode (no significant delay if I remember right), but I haven't run any scans there. I removed AdAware, SpyBot and AVG, installed MS SE, rebooted and ran a scan. Nothing. Then reinstalled new versions of the three. I also installed Avanquest System Suite 10, but later removed it. There are a few artifacts in the registry, but just things like the registration information and CD key. In all the scans I've run over the years on this notebook, I can't remember ever finding any malware or other 'positives' except the eicore test file ( I think that's what it's called. Fuzzy memory right now). The notebook does run a bit hotter than I remember after it's been on for an hour or so, but there is nothing obstructing the vents. I keep threatening to open the case, but I hate to get into that. I tend not to remember where everything goes and end up with spare screws. I'll try pulling and reinserting the RAM when I get a chance later. Machine is not handy right now. Can that be done while in Hibernate? Or does it need a full power down?
  6. Laptop, so no cabling or videocard. CPU overheat would cause problems while running, no? Runs fine and fairly quick for a 5+ year old notebook once it starts up fully. I think I ran the chkdsk not too long ago and Smart shows good disk health. HDD was replaced once a few years back.
  7. Compaq 2596US, WinXPHome, SP2 On startup, it gets as far as the DeskTop with Icons showing, then stalls. Mouse works, can left-click Icons and title highlight will change, but hovering mouse over taskbar changes to hourglass. No icons appear in Taskbar and Start button does not respond. (If the Start button is clicked during this time, the Start Menu will appear later as if the button click is held in suspension) CTRL-ALT-Del brings up Task Manager immediately, but nothing unusual appears there, CPU percentage flucuates below 20%. Using File-New Task, I can start Process Explorer which shows the same as Task Manager -- nothing out of the ordinary and low CPU usage. Once TaskManager and ProcExplorer are running, their Icons show on the TaskBar with the Clock, but the clock is static holding the time it first appeared, doesn't run until later. wmiprvse.exe is highlighted in a rust color, but that doesn't appear to be an error. At some point cidaemon.exe comes alive, but still nothing happens. There are three instances of GoogleUpdate (apparently related to GoogleEarth) showing, but no CPU activity on any of them. About 15 minutes later (yes, minutes), everything will break loose and the system starts normally. Everything works fine from there on until the next StartUp. All scans (AdAware, SpyBot, AVG, MalwareBytes, MS SE, Avanquest SystemSuite) come up empty, no threats found. I run each individually to double check each other, not simultaneously.
  8. I was hoping the gargantuan humungoloid signatures would be gone, but alas, they're not. At least my content blocker still works.
  9. Compaq 2596US Notebook, 4-5 years old, WinXPHome Runs OK after it defaults out via F1, but date/time needs to be reset. CMOS Battery?
  10. I see all the old threads and posts and the Search pulls them up. Board is active, just nobody here yet. Gonna take some getting used to though for those who used the old board. Maybe the Sigs won't be so gigantic. Profile is a bit hard to find to adjust settings too.
  11. Don't see much activity yet. I know it was offline for a while, maybe people haven't found their way back yet? Why IPB? No TMN Favicon; only seeing the default IPB Favicon if that matters.
  12. You could probably do a direct connection, but for the price of routers now, it's just as easy to use one. I've seen for port routers for $20 or less, some even come with a patch cord. If your two machines are close together a couple of 7' or 15' cords at $2 or so will handle it. The machines will basically set themselves up with the Network Wizard. I think you still need a crossover cable for direct connections, but some PCs can detect and correct for that. With a small network, you could add a separate network HDD to do all your storage.
  13. No, mostly just read. Don't log in very often anymore. Most of this stuff goes over my head. Too many stupid cells have crawled into the grey matter lately. No, but I have some other security concerns. That's why I want to find out what's involved first. Then I can check with them.
  14. Wow, lots of good info here.
  15. If I wanted to create a proxy server using a webhosting account, what would I need?

    StarBand NOVA

I got in a few days before the cutoff, so I got the Pro locked in for 2 years at $49/mo; not sure what will happen after that. Wasn't even going to do that, but they dropped the $39 plan and were going to kick me up to $49 on the old 360 modem with no networking, so I decided to try it.

    StarBand NOVA

Been on it for several days now, seems to be fine. More stable than the 360 was. Can't do a speed test on this site though. I've tried several times and the screen changes to 'forwarding you to a bigger test' a few times and freezes, won't do anything else. Tests on other sites run fine and are steady in the 490 down, 90 up range, sometimes a little better. Connects straight to the WAN port of any router for full networking.
  18. Can't believe you're welcoming a common China (or maybe Russian) Spammer. Such IDs are common and I regularly boot them out of my forums.
  19. Do you REALLY think that's a valid member? Maybe. But not likely.
  20. Here's another one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824254006 Also 19", 2ms. I've bought several of this brand, not a bad pixel yet.
  21. And that's after 3 wireless hops.
