zalternate got a reaction from Unnamed Sources in How do I get AT&T to listen???
Might you happen to have a DSL reseller in the area? 'Dry loop' or 'dark DSL'.
They might be able to tell you one way or another(don't sign anything before full confirmation, such as modem blinking happily away). Even though it is still AT&T that provisions the DSL connection. Unless you are in one of those places where DSL went around you.

You could also inquire as a potential business line customer(phone business number).   A 'potential' home office, since you do not yet have a business number. Gets you past the screen reading drones. Note that your phone number and address may show on their screens as already having asked for DSL.

Also if you see an AT&T truck/tech in the area. Ask him/her. They know more than phone support on where the lines are. Or a slight wire direction change may allow you to be within the 15,000 foot limit.
Removal of a 'bridge tap', may bring results.

zalternate got a reaction from Toxappoizpani in Comcast 'hacking User Data Stream' Lawsuit Settlement.
Note that in this article, The term 'slowing down traffic of file sharers', actually means Hacking the users data stream to insert a 'end transmission packet' to stop the file transfers. And last I heard, is that Hacking someones connection is still illegal.

Opt out to leave things open for another day. Most people are too lazy to spend another year or two in court, to watch and learn from a million users suing Comcast in single cases.
The way lobbyists are buying off politicians, theres always another crime, by an ISP, that will be committed against the users of the Internet.
Or does your particular ISP always blame the site that you are trying to use, for all slowdowns?

Wow, Gigabit uplink to the home!

Can you please provide a link to where you got this information?

The logistics of rolling fiber to every home in Australia would be immense.

But yes, it's definitely possible. I've even heard of 10 Gbps, 30 Gbps and 100 Gbps symmetrical fiber... not for residential obviously. Fiber has little limitation because if you hit the limitations of one strand of fiber you just need to add more strands.

Here's resource from Feb 2010 that talks about 1Gbps fiber to the home

    Resource: http://gigaom.com/2010/02/11/so-where-else-in-the-world-can-you-get-1-gbps-to-the-home/
..... all I know is that I would definitely find a use for that in my home

And heres the Ugggg side of satellite based Internet for Australia.

Would be nice with the new high throughput satellites, but not enough people per satellite investment, for anyone but government to run the satellites according to the article. The outback is a big empty place with pockets of civilization and the new generation spot beams would have to be modified to fit the profile of Australia's needs. And carry other transmission platforms(TV, communications, etc) to make a profitable go at it.

    And an Ampersand is a , & , or upper case 7 .

Read something on that the other day about ampersand. Or it was a comic strip........ A lot of people don't know what the name means.

OK, It was Family Guy and Brian the dog teaching in the 'stupid version English class'. Teaching the kids that they can be ho's and ditch diggers and such. Instead of just being the rejects of society.

    uuuuhh, annoying!

I seriously don't know what's causing this. For some reason the new version of IPB has taken liberties outside it's own directory. I mean, I call upon it all over the site but that doesn't mean it should be taking the liberties it's taking.

Anyways, I got a temp fix for this... this is a head scratcher and it's stressing me out too much right now. For some reason if you add an ampersand at the end of the URL it works. So future links are now being printed with this for now. I'll figure it out.

Some wireless(cellular) ISP's in the States will slow down your connection when you hit the limit(no overage charges on some). Instead of just letting the user run full speed and really racking up the overage charges.
Telus gives users a free first month of technnically unlimited GB's to let the user understand how much data they can do via the wireless stick. And now a floating pay limit to the next GB pay scale(500MB, 1GB, 2GB, 5GB), if the user goes over their bottom plan of 500MB's.

There is a slow worldwide movement to actually warn users that they are about to hit their limit. And possibly shut it down when roaming in another country. To prevent massive charges of $10,000 for data use.

I am new as well to the Bell HPSA network--Bell Turbo Hub and I as well am very impressed. Located outside Minden Ontario--very hilly and rocky--lots of evergreens to obstruct signal--but doing not bad. Installed an outdoor Yagi Antenna and will also be adding an amplifyer to maximize signal. Downloads and uploads are pretty much the same at 2mbs--I cant believe the upload speeds!!! I cant wait to see what the amp.does for my speeds. Also am able to use voice over ( magic jack) for first time--awsome.
I as well have ended a 2 year stint with xplornet (Hughes) and cancelled a year early--so on top of having to put up with satellite and spending over 100.00 a month--I have a 312.00 early cancellation fee!!
I will make that back in first 6 months--this new Bell deal is 1/4 the price as well. Only drawback is, it can get expensive for anyone doing alot of downloading of movies, music ect. After 10 gigabit in a month--it costs1.5cents per mb--I highly doubt I will go over the 10gigabit package.

as far as i can recall, most (if not all) HP all in one printers work. and i've also heard of Canon and Epson printers will also work. but ive also heard that Epson printers use quite a large amount of ink.

from an "ubuntu linux hardware compatibility list" here are a few of the results i've found that should work.

And then this link for Avast download link to Avast's site, install instructions, how to get free license key, etc.
    http://www.ubuntugeek.com/avast-antivirus-for-ubuntu-desktop.html

Note that some of the anti-virus products will just identify a virus and quarantine it.
A Windows virus can run in Linux if you have 'Wine' installed to run some Windows programs.
If you hit a site with one of those fake virus scanners in Linux, you can laugh at it, with it saying you are infected in a Windows machine file system.

But not many virus can attack Linux with it being open source and the OS constantly updated for any virus threat. And it is more fun to make a virus for Windows machines with all it's exploits.

The hard core MAC addicts are busy trying to find 'duct tape' for their Iphone4 and all they can find is 'duck tape' in the store, so they have to keep going from store to store until they can find some sticky gray tape. Some places only have sticky black tape. And the stuff in the dollar store only lasts so long before it falls off.

OK Sat is none of my buisness ,The UK is a small island , I don't know anyone over here on sat , it's either Adsl via phone line or Fibre optic cable in the larger towns , but I was thinking ( dangerous for me ,I might have to go and lay down ) sure America and Canada are vast , and beyond my comprehension on size , but railways cross both , laid wayback in the good old days , I figure a Sat is a short lived costly item , never going to have great speed or pings , surly it's cheaper long term to lay cable , maybe to the nearest town then wirelless link from there , ? , the UK now has Adsl to 90% of folk , some I agree are only seeing about 1.5 Mbps , the remaining 10% are slowly getting radio relay links , maybe having one national phone company back 40 years was a good thing ( anyone had the right to a phone line no matter how remote , ) Sorry if my comments sound stupid , but it's the only way I learn BTW , I just re- thougth this post , in the England I guess you can't be further than 30 miles away from a town , and mountains are no bigger than a nipple on a virigin , ADSL on the phone line ? 8 years back my line was good for a max of 2Mbps , same line now gives me 6 Mbps , soon to be going to 24Mbps , ( fibre to the local cabinet , 400 yards away ) to me Sat dosn't seem the way forward , Regards Roco UK
