  1. When I test to the NY server, which is about 550 miles from me, I get 200-220 Mbps on my Spectrum 200 Mbps plan when things are running doing well. I get short duration reading anywhere fro 80 to 150 when things aren’t running at max, but those durations are usually only 10s of seconds long, then it returns to the higher speeds. My upload speeds are at my max plan of 10 Mbps with short durations of 1/2 that. Those durations are annoying more often than the download anomalies.

Mmmmm...  just spent 45 minutes on the phone with HughesNet to help troubleshoot my slow speeds.    While I have not necessarily had bad support experience (yet), I'm definitely second guessing this service.    I can work around 450-600ms latency of the satellite, but .45kbps downloads is back to the stone age of networking.   9600 baud modem anyone?

I am 14 days into my service, and this is the first all day rain that we have had and WOW...  service degraded from 20MB down to .45kbps downloads.   I could barely surf the web at these speeds.       I was told of service degradation during "bad weather, but come on...  a slow steady rain causes sub MB speeds?      I certainly would not be able to work from my home office at these speeds.

Your upload speed isn’t too whippy either.

  5. It could be that they just have too many customers connected to the same subsystem as you. The throttling occurs in those hours where everyone gets home and starts watching high bandwidth video stream. The ISP may or may not be intentionally throttling you.

  6. You’re actually mostly correct with your party line assessment. Your ISP puts all its users through various sets of processing equipment. To keep their costs down, they minimize the number of channels they use. The more users per channel, the slower things get because you’re all sharing the bandwidth available on the channel you’re on. It looks from your data, that between 11 AM and 12:30 pm, things slow down a lot. You should call your ISP and tell them what’s happening. It may take more than one phone call. Be polite but persistent. They should have the ability to move your account to a different channel - they can balance the user throughput between different channels of their gear.

It it looks like you’re testing using the TestMy Dallas server. Is it the one closest to where you are?
