Wow... look at this test result. I pay for 400 Down and my Avg Down is around 448. I snuck one by their speed throttle mechanism. At least now I know my neighborhood and facility wiring etc. can handle 1 gig. How this happened I don't know, but here is my theory. Based on the last thing I did, which was manipulating my so called router to grab it's Ip address from the host's DHCP but ignore everything else that comes from the Host's DHCP -- my router finally picked up DNS from 1.1.1.1
I proved my so called router was using the new DNS server via the cool tool on this site (DNS lookup or something similar, under Misc --> tools).
So, the very first time I ran the test without the extra DHCP baggage - my Down test hit 1 gig+, but their clever infrastructure caught on real fast. At first it over-corrected, then settled down in at the speed I usually get in my test results. So, no, benchmarking is not my hobby. I just want to be well prepared for my inevitable conversation with my dear old ISP.

I'm calling around your area to data centers and I found one that you may want to look into.

    https://www.123.net/data-center/

    Specifically looking at https://www.123.net/wp-content/uploads/Data-Center-Tech-Specs-DC1-WEB.pdf

FIXED WIRELESS • Up to 10 Gbps Speeds (99.99% SLA) • 55+ Wireless Point of Presence (PoP) Sites Across Michigan • 128-bit AES Encrypted Data Transport • Primary & Backup Connectivity for Dedicated Internet & Ethernet Services • Emergency / Short-Term Deployments • Campus Wireless Solutions • Temporary Fixed Wireless Solutions (Events / Construction Site)
Their HQ is in Southfield, MI.  Only about 40 miles away.  If you can't get the fixed wifi solution you may want to ask them (or other data centers near Detroit) if you could work a deal with them to upload the files for you.  You could 2 day a USB to them for really cheap and it may even get to them in 1 day.  I think $0.10 per GB is a fair price for both of you.  But they might not want to touch your files.

Hopefully you can get that fixed wifi solution, even at a degraded speed it may be better than your other options.  Give them a call and get some details.  I'll keep looking too.

Even if you get just 5 Mbps upload it would make it more doable.  23 hours per 80GB.

So you maxed at 65 Mbps in multithread here.  You should also try manually selecting 200MB from the download test -- you'll probably be a higher result.

And then you maxed out at about 13 Mbps using the classic single thread test.

Yeah, your latency graphs actually look really good.  For a comparison here's what it looks like on a poor quality satellite connection.

How is your computer connected to your connection?  Does the connection come into the DSL modem, to a router and then wired to your computer... or is it wifi to your computer... or is your modem directly connected to the computer with a cat-5 cable?

I suggest calling them instead of emailing. Be polite but persistent. Keep calling them. If they can’t resolve it from their regular support phone people, tell them you’d like to elevate the issue and talk to a manager or supervisor.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Will A Better Router Help?
A better router may help you with range and internal network speed but your wifi right now probably isn't the bottleneck... it's the connection.

To see if you might benefit from a faster router connect your modem directly to your best computer.  Then run TestMy.net.  Connect it back up to wifi and test the same computer again.  You'll probably need to unplug the power from modem each time when you switch back and fourth, they usually need to boot up and get the MAC address of the device it's connected to.

If you do that test and find your speed is much faster wired... then you might want to think about getting a newer router.  If the speeds are about the same... you can probably hold off unless you're having other issues with wifi.

I personally use Netgear.  A used Nighthawk R7000 for ~$70 would blow away whatever they gave you.  I also would never use a router or modem from my ISP and prefer to have them as two separate units.  Better for future upgradability, cheaper if something fails too.  I need to upgrade routers far more often than modems so having them separate is better.  Also better for interference.

When I've tested even the supposed best ISP routers... they always under perform vs retail counterparts.

When it comes to wifi, testing right on top of the router isn't optimal.  You want to be a little away from it.  Maybe like 10 ft.

With all the hype over data privacy laws here in Europe (GDPR, which stands for General Data Protection Regulation), I can see where non-technical people get confused over using data to refer to integrated circuit data instead of personal data.

The best replacement word I can think of would be "bytes", e.g. "Uploading 12 MB of random bytes..."

To a non-technical person, they will more likely see the word "bytes" as technical jargon than personal data.  Even if they Google (or Bing) the keyword "Bytes", the search results will not be about organisations collecting data, privacy, regulations, etc.

I just tried opening a YouTube video on my iPad Air 2 and it only took about 1 second to load and start playing. I was outside on my deck at the fringe of my wireless range. I got RTs of 70 to 200 mS and download speeds of 7.5 to 21.5 Mbps out there.

I typically get 200 Mbps inside the house and RTs of typically between 50 & 100 mS. I’m in the US using Spectrum

@CA3LE - the time-of-day showing for the RT is one hour later than the time for the download test results.

@CA3LE is it just randomly generated bit patterns of ones and zeroes? The word “information” makes it sound like the information has some intelligent content. Maybe use “numbers” or “bit patterns” ?

The latest version doesn't share your information any more than the old version.

The only new privacy thing is consent management.  This is to meet EU's GDPR because TMN uses cookies.  Some cookies are used for personalized are.  But that's not new... what's new is that I'm telling you up front and giving you the option to opt out.

TMN is and will always be on your side and work with your best interest in mind.  I do not sell or disclose any personal information and am completely a 3rd party with no affiliation with any other companies.

I'm proxied into a connection in the EU (GB to be exact, where you are) for this demonstration.

Notice that as soon as you hit "choices" it deselects everything.

Only users in the EU get this notice.  In the US, I never see this.  The way it previously worked for you was how it still works for the majority of users here today, it creates the cookies and doesn't bug you.  The EU created these guidelines, I'm just one of the few sites adhering to the law... I guess.  I'd think you be used to seeing these kinds of popup's all over the place.  Don't you?  ...the EU made the rule, I'm just trying my best to be legit around the world.

TMN is still the same site you've grown to love.  And I have no plan of changing that aspect.
    Cheers!

By the way... notice the "privacy reminder" from Google at the beginning of that video.  This is the same thing.  And you still use Google, right?

I noticed that on the Results page, the Light/Dark selector link at the bottom of the page isn’t there. It’s there on the Download and Upload pages.

The date range selector on the Results is pretty cool too. The downside is when you want to display say 6 months of results, you have to scroll the calendar when you used to be able to just enter a number of days. Not sure if you can come up with an easy way to allow the user to just enter the number of days.

This site has allowed me to document the incredibly poor service I’ve been receiving and the ISP responded by confirming it and said they need to do pole work. They’ve called the police to arrange a day/time and I’m waiting to hear back about it.
I pay for 400 Mbps down but receive between 50 and 150 (see my testing results). If I pay for 100 Mbps I save $10/month! I’m just going to keep pushing them, which is why I spend my time running and sending test results instead of getting in here to the forum ☹️ ?‼️

Hi Ron525, thank you for being a long time member!  And thank you for taking the time.

After looking closer at your results it appears that you're on an older version of firefox.

    You're on 56.0 ... We're on like --- 67 now.

So update firefox.  But that's not it.  That's not how I roll.

...THANK YOU!  I program for this.  I'll adjust my rule for that function so that it works in your browser too... it's really easy but I'll have to do it tomorrow because I'm wrapping my night up.  Basically, I'll tell it to use the old method in your instance because it's failsafe, we know it works.  I literally just have to adjust the version number of firefox that it will accept for that function.  Because I know that some of its methods are dependent on browser functionality released after a certain date.  My research on those functions start dates must have been a little off OR your browser is literally on the EDGE of when that functionality that's needed to make that work properly was introduced.

At any rate, I'll make sure to make that work properly under all circumstances.  This is why your input is so valuable to me.  I'd need a million computers to test a fraction of the circumstances you guys can do in one week.  I'm not kidding.  I can't do this without you guys.

Again, thank you for taking your time, you're making TMN better.

I logged in yesterday to find a new format, I did an upload test first but no results it just went back to the test my upload speed page.
I have tried a few more times but still nothing, also none of the tests are showing in my logged results either.
The download tests work okay with the graph showing after the test and are showing in my logged results as well.

Edit; Have just used the old version and upload is working as it should be.
