It's funny you say that, because I test my connection fairly often, typically once or twice a week, sometimes more, and it usually has the same result: About 45-55Mbps, so 5.625-6.875MB/s. Anytime I download data from MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) I end up seeing about 2MB/s. Sometimes it spikes as high as 3MB/s. Which again, is dependent on the actual server at that point, or the peering to that server. The only issue I really ever have with Testmy.net, is that it doesn't have as many local servers as I would like. Ideally I would prefer a server near Redmond, Washington, as that is where most of my major traffic goes. The only issued is that I can't trace to MSDN, because my requests are blocked after the 10th hop. (Which is one of the MSN nodes.) Thanks, EBrown

I don't think it does, I think Hyper-V as a standalone doesn't require anything. I can drop it on a server later and see what it takes, I've never used the standalone, I always use Server 2012 R2 for Hyper-V. Thanks, EBrown

I have always used Xen or Hyper-V for this reason. Microsoft even provides Hyper-V as a standalone free. (No license required.) The difference in the standalone version and the service for Windows server is that the standalone has no GUI. Xen was a fairly good Hypervisor, if I recall correctly. Which is fine, all I really want to be able to do with it is test without a GUI, via WGET or whatever other command can be used on the respective machine. (I.e. wget on Unix/Linux/OS X, Invoke-WebRequest on Powershell, etc.) Thanks, EBrown

That was literally all I wanted...lol Literally a file, string, stream, series of data bytes that I can download and measure time with. (Especially for devices that have no Javascript/HTML support.) Edit: I don't think you "owe" me anything, all I would have liked is an update at some point when I refreshed the topic saying, "Oh, sorry, this is at the bottom of the list right now." Rather than waiting and hoping that it would one day show up. That's it. Not "I'll put something together for you... " in Feb 2013, then Dec 2013 "I'm about to start another 3 month programming session. I'll really try to make it a point to get to this. I want it too. ;)" and still nothing has happened. Another year passes. Testmy.net passes by as a gleam. In the eyes of the viewer it appears to be nothing more than a magical site providing speed test information. But deep within the depths greater things were happening. Another time ago things would have been nicer, but now they have long been lost. Just reminding you I still would love this feature. Could be faulty wiring. How old is the house? If it's Cat 4 or 3 wired to support Ethernet that would explain a lot of things. Distance is also a factor. The cabling, from end to end, of wired devices is not to exceed 100m by standards of Ethernet. (330 feet or so.) That includes any patch cable from the wall outlet to your device, and any cabling from inside the wall outlet to the source of the ISP demarc. If the four ethernet ports are on a shared bus (I.e., wired all together) that will also have negative performance implications as well. Thanks, EBrown

Indeed, it seems that in today's society you can't browse a website safely anymore. What you used to only be able to expect on adult material sites, or in the deep-web, you now see on all these "click-bait" websites with no goal other than to get advert views. The great part is they do this legally, and they start attaching their links to the social-networks, adsense, and everything else they can find. Well it really gets you when you visit pages that have 2/3 of the browser view covered in ads. I have never once used advertising on any of my sites. (And with them being so small, it wouldn't benefit me anyway.) I don't ever browse to unknown or untrusted sites on servers and such that I run. I think the only site outside my own that I view from my servers is TMN, oddly enough. Thanks, EBrown

I've always used the Dallas server. (And I don't use multi-threaded either. ) Yeah, the D.C. server is probably closer to me, but I prefer having the large route. Gives me a better overall figure that way. Thanks, EBrown

Considering you are located in the UK, I would recommend you use the London server. (Mostly because the large majority of .uk sites are located within the UK, so it represents the typical speed from you to them.) Other than that, the choice really doesn't matter except to change what routing paths are used and such. If you manually decide to select the San Jose server, you will likely choose a significantly different route than if you were to select the Dallas server, or the Washington D.C. server. The difference of the two you say? Speedtest.net uses a pure flash-based approach, and drops the top and bottom 5% of your tested speed. Why? Because the first instant of testing is typically slower due to the requirement to establish a connection. Then there's often a sudden burst which is typically irrelevant to your speed. Speedtest.net is more useful for a total-throughput test. It's often handy for gamers to test what the typical speed of their connection is. (After all, they are using UDP mostly which is connectionless, so there is no establishment of a connection.) Testmy.net uses a pure HTTP based approach, and does not remove any data. Why? Because almost all of the typical users network traffic is over HTTP, which requires the establishment of a connection. (Downloads, webpages, style-sheets, images, etc.) Testmy.net is much more relevant to testing your total connection throughput. Basically giving you a true establishment of how websites should download. Thanks, EBrown

Where are you at? We used to have Hughes Net at my dad's place but we ditched it because another ISP had recently shown up. (We didn't get out of the contract, but we did get service with the new ISP.) I'd check that there aren't any small, local providers first. If there are, look into getting one of them and then start with the BBB about Hughes. And check if you get 3G/4G in your area. I think Tommie Gorman uses EVDO for his internet, and he seems satisfied with it. Thanks, EBrown
