FallowEarth Posted January 6, 2006 CID Share Posted January 6, 2006 Both are yuck. The all around fav is Kaspersky, it's solid software...if you're payin that is. Trend Micro makes a good product too. And of course, get a router...a hardware firewall is your best security.
Bwalker25 Posted January 6, 2006 CID Share Posted January 6, 2006 I'd have to say a hardware firewall, Kapersky, and Kerio Firewall, but thats just me, they (the software) are not resource hungry and the provide some of the best if not the best combination of security for end users. blablah Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 I'D HAVE TO AGREE --- NONE OF THEM WHY?? McAfee: I got McAfee w/ comcast and it REALLY sucks... whenever I took a test I'd always have like a 70% score with firewall and virus scan off... I don't know why though, I guess it's just my computer. Norton: I just hate it... doesn't really help with the protection and slows down my computer really bad. I'm using Kaspersky, and it's AWESOME!!!! My tests aren't 70% of my Comcast's anymore, it's 30.1% faster than Comcast's!! I just have to say, be careful with what you choose. You should be using Kaspersky Personal Pro. It gives the best protection IMO. It's an Anit-Virus solution with some network protection. Get a seperate firewall. I run a hardware firewall along with Lavasoft Personal Firewall ver. 1.0.543.5722 (433)

organ_shifter Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 Sygate is my favorite, its really too bad symantec bought them out and discontinued development on it . Yeah, Sygate was a favorite of mine as well. I don't touch anything developed/purchased by Symantec. I even gave up Partition Magic for Paragon Partition Manager. Swimmer Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 I was looking through one of my old pc mags.. November issue of PC mag has this exact issue.. The fastest to respond to any virus threat is kaspersky followed by symantec and etrust-ino.. The source is av-test.org

Swimmer Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 There wasnt enough space to chart ms response to anything. It would have been somethink like 33 miles worth of paper to chart the quickest response.

gwhall007 Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 I can't believe no one has mentioned the best of them all - Eset NOD32. Hands down best I have used, which has been just about all of them - including all those mentioned here. I don't know why it isn't mentioned more, as it is a great product with an excellent heuristics engine - very important for early detection of virus' (or is that virii?). Also, they provide virus signature updates almost daily. Don't take my word for it, though. Google it and read. You will find that most true security experts either recommend NOD32 or include it in their list of ones they would recommend. Here is their link, if interested: http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
organ_shifter Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 I can't believe no one has mentioned the best of them all - Eset NOD32. NOD32 fell off long time ago. I haven't used it in quite some time. Its overall detection isn't all that great either. F-Secure would be my next choice after Kaspersky. gwhall007 Posted January 10, 2006 CID Share Posted January 10, 2006 "It's overall detection isn't all that great" - I call BS! Prove it, as everything I have read, and my own experiences, says otherwise. Please provide a link to, at least, one article stating this.
