Help for the new girl...

If there is anyone who can find some pity in their heart for my obvious lack of understanding, I would be ever so thankful!  I fear that I am in over my head here, though it is really more of a language issue than it is anything else.  There are whole volumes worth of new terms that I am still trying to learn which adds a level of difficulty to learning the ins-and-outs of this brave new-to-me world of file-sharing.  To be honest, at 34 years old, I feel decades too old to start learning this kind of thing now!

But this stuff DOES intrest me, and I am anxious to get my hands on all the information available with the hope that eventually, my new vocabulary will merge with some basic understanding of the how the process works and POOF! The light will click on in this brain of mine!  Kind of like Russel Crowe with the codes in A Beautiful Mind, but minus the actual mental illness... 

I am pasting my test results here for review, and if anyone can see the error that I am obviously not able to see for myself, I would be so appreciate your time to point it out.  Obviously I am missing something, even after reading and trying everyone's suggestions and instructions on dozens of posts much like this one...  So many of you offer such good advice, and I can't tell you how much I love how complete you try to be, as it makes the process much less of a hair-pulling session!  Yet despite all that, I am still suffering from a blind spot...  Thank you for any help you may have to offer!

Dont worry about your age either Swimmer is like 75 and I have to teach him shit all the time.  Looks like you have SBC Global, what do they tell you to expect in terms of speed.

It would appear to be a 1.5 DSL package to me @ a  1056 Kbps speed. And the 1013 kB file was probably too small a file to test from. Try the 2992 file test on the same test page. And don't use the smart test as it will give you slower results. Also use the 579 for your upload test.

Repost you new speeds and we will go from there. Also are you working through a wireless router? If so plug directly into the modem without the router in between to see if you get any different speeds.

I am so glad that all of you are so nice!  Thank you!  Thank you!  Not ONE of you scared me off in the least!  Your answers were, naturally, right on, and when I checked to see if my numbers were in line with others' test results, something I might have done BEFORE posting my plea    I was indeed communicating at a respectable enough speed all along.  But it seemed so slow, REALLY S-L-O-W, so I bit the bullet, closed my eyes when I clicked "POST" and I actually ASKED FOR HELP!! 

The ability to ask for help with a computer issue was a skill I used to use without a problem.  Recently, however, my co-workers and I lost all ability to even joke about computer-related issues only minutes after our new IT dude arrived on scene.  My first and only run-in with our local 'expert,' was in June when he was unable to solve a network problem and blamed everything and everyone else, including, and this was my personal favorite of all his excuses, the lack of a Phillips screwdriver of the proper size.  He then announced to one and all that women could not use a computer any better than they could drive a car.  Nice

I have read the information at the link you provided and did so before my original post.  I am trying to read all documentation available so that I may grasp this foreign concept.  But thank you for sending along any info just the same.  Can't hurt, might help, right?  2.) Wireless router?  Surly you jest...  I am just now trying my hand at file sharing--at this pace, I will not get to trying anything wireless other than my TV remote until an estimated 2012...  Still, the queston was flattering as you seem to have assumed I might be smart enough to try such new toys out!  And, of course, there's the part where it wasn't really such a slow connection--I was being unreasonable in my expectations, all is well with downloading in my world for now... And 3.) I sent the picture you requested...  I can't talk techie but, I hope you won't hold that against me when I ask this: would having been able to see whom you were helping (hopefully....) did not seem to you to be completely Curella De Ville-ish have gotten me any faster response than I did?  Just curious...

I just figured that might be part of the slow down part in your speeds. I assume you are on a 1.5 DSL connection. And your speeds being around 1056 Kbps. So you are on a network (work in an office with other computers) then?

On the pic, can you blame me? I am on here regularly with about 56:6 guys to girls. A fresh face is always nice. Actually we help everybody on the same basis. The faster help part was a joke really.  But it does not hurt.

But seriously, you are on a 1.5 meg DSL connection? Obviously not wireless, but that doesn't seem to slow mine down at all and I can't imagine a properly working one hurting anyone's speed. So you are probably not going to get much faster than what you have.

Any suggestions is easy English as to what exactly to do when I have downloaded a torrent and there are 15 files all the same size and maybe one or two that seem close but yet a bit different?  I mean, say we're talking about a movie, what do I do to those files after my torrent has finished downloading to actually see the download?  I promise I will eventually have questions that don't sound like I bought my first computer yesterday!

I would not worry about it. There are no dumb questions on here, that is what we do. Some are better than others. I don't think anyone here was born with a keyboard in their hands. 

6 months ago I did not even know how to even do anything with a c.d. besides plug and play. Record  Hows that? Really, and I thought Noton was a good anti-virus. There is so much to learn on here. And the more you interact and help others, the more it becomes normal. I actually started learning by greeting folks, and asking them to have patience while someone came along. Really, I did not know much at all. Well enough about me. Just enjoy, and have a good learning time.

.rar files?? .... if so that is kinda like a zip file...you can dl winrar

to uncompress them...after you dl winrar all you need to do

is left click on only one of the rar files & extract to the same folder

if you want...i am just guessing...but that is what it sounds like you have

yeah they're mostly rar files in torrents, download winrar www.rarlab.com and install it, than double click on the first file and click extract, it'll extract all the files in the same directory and make a new folder, go in that folder and your application should be there.

I'm thinking you downloaded a ISO file. Which is a image of a disk (CD or DVD). Basically it takes a exact picture of the disk and then you are able to make an exact replica of that disk. You will need a program like Nero to put the image on a blank disk. Generally all you have to do is click on one of those 15 files and extract them, this will generally extract all of the files for you into one or two large files like a .bin or .cue (maybe .iso). You use this to put it on a disk. If you have the torrent file you used to download the file (the small lil file you click on to launch bittorrent and start downloading not the file itself) pm me and ill get it from you, view the file and help you put it on a disk. Also this may be helpful to you. If not disregard it.
