Yet here I don't even come close.

Accessing usenet through Astraweb I can achieve a sustained download speed of 5.9MB/s.
Being as I'm actually downloading at fantastic speeds I know the problem isn't at my end.  I'm thinking the hop that times out might have something to do with the diminished test speeds here.

Here is my tracert

That hop that times out is completely normal, it doesn't respond on purpose for some reason.  My host explained it to my once but it's been a long time and I forgot their explanation.

Everyone gets that timeout and achieve killer speeds here.  Most likely your r_win or MTU are set incorrectly, what OS are you using.

Just because you can thread 50 connections at full speed doesn't mean that you are optimized.  Also, the tests here can't be compared to speedtest.net.  They use a completely different method, a method that has been proven to be ineffective at detecting the issues that TestMy.net detects.  Read this post for a little more information that you may not know about speedtest.net >> http://testmy.net/ip...m-speedtestnet/

Looks to me like the bad part of that traceroute is on your hosts side... hop number 4

4 100 ms 203 ms 200 ms host-197-13-220-24-static.midco.net [24.220.13.197]

But hop 15... 100% normal for it to time out

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium

If it helps I'm in North Dakota and currently subscribing to Midcontinent Communications.

Did a few more tests here today and am still receiving roughly the same stats.
Another tracert I just did.  The long hop seem to have abated.

are you on a hardline to the modem/router or are you on wifi? testmy.net detects issues speedtest.net will not such as incorrect r win and MTU settings and being on wifi flash based tests will not detect those issues
