Wow, Gigabit uplink to the home! Can you please provide a link to where you got this information? The logistics of rolling fiber to every home in Australia would be immense. But yes, it's definitely possible. I've even heard of 10 Gbps, 30 Gbps and 100 Gbps symmetrical fiber... not for residential obviously. Fiber has little limitation because if you hit the limitations of one strand of fiber you just need to add more strands.
