You need to worry more about rootkits than viruses. I install rkhunter on every Linux box I run and it has always worked well for me. http://rkhunter.sourceforge.net/ Can do a few basic things as well to keep the script kiddies from attacking such as changing ssh port and disabling root, locking root access to IP things like this1 point
