  1. blablah : I tried that was my best suggestion.Unless you ISP is sending garbage back to block tracert & ping. Some don't allow ping or tracert you might call & ask them. My ISP blocks them they say because this prevents DOS attacks. They don't send garbage back though.
  2. I don't have the equipment to copy DVDs but when I get it I probably will for this reason I hate all the preveiws before I get to the movie,I would like a copy I can just put in hit play & the movie starts. Some DVDs even block you from skipping
  3. I don't like digital speedometers they drive me crazy on a trip.
  4. blablah ;You probably have some corrupt files but try this. Type cd after the command prompt this should give you this for a prompt C:> after you do this type cdwindows if you want windows it should look like this C:>cdwindows that should give you this prompl C:windows> Try your ping or tracert after these prompts.
  5. Voltageman; I know we have done some joking in this topic. But to get serious & political.I think if a poll was done most members would be against the so called Patriot Act.It violates the Constitution like few laws have .I agree to stay free we need to take the risk of terrorism.Think how many American soldiers that have died for that freedom .What if they had said "It's not safe to go to war instead we need the government to take away our freedom & protect us" What do you expect from Bush who was Illegally appointed President the first time by the Supreme Court. If not for this he wouldn't have won a second election.I recently watched a special on Bush & the Florida election. It said that several black people were listed as felons on the election rolls so they weren't allowed to vote about 95% of these were not felons this amounted to about 60000 eligable voters not allowed to vote & about another 95000 ballots of black voters were thrown out.Usually the black vote is Democratic. For all these votes not allowed is criminal especially when Bush supposedly won by 504 votes. These don't even take into account those votes with the so called dangling chads. So with a crooked President why should the fact he had the Patriot act drawn up to take away our rights be a suprise.

boywonder; Yeah whether they work depends on the modem. These are the interpretation based on what the site said. The last 2 are from my notes. DIAG <2A4D3263 10=14 11=0D 12=40> Key 10 is the Received signal power level, in -dBm. If the value represented displays over 30, then there may be signal problems with the phone line. Your key 10 is 14 so OK Key 11 is the Transmit signal power level, in -dBm. This value should be between 6 and 16. If it is above or below this range there may be signal problems with the phone line. Yours is 0D the chart is 13 so this is in range. key 12 is 40 the chart shows this is 64 & 40 + is supposed to be good.I think the nterpretation of this key is incorrect & the person that wrote it really didn't know what this key was for. There was a value for key 14 but your test didn't show it. These are the only ones the site link covered. AT%L if the value is under 30 you are OK over 30 indicates signal problems. My modem shows 0 AT%Q under 30 is OK over 30 indicates heavy line noise My modem shows 0
  7. Big Brother is watching I guess its time to make our aluminum foil hats that should keep them from noticing us. To be serious sounds like an invasion of civil rights to be microwaved & lasered without your consent.
  8. ROM-DOS ; Backup befoere you try this.Copy & paste the empty file (KB912919 (hidden system) file in my Windows $hf_mig$ folder) into its own folder. In C: name it what you want. Then delete the file(KB912919 (hidden system) file in my Windows $hf_mig$ folder,) .If it will let you then reboot the file may reappear if it does then delete it again & try the update without rebooting. If it stays deleted then just try the update. The reason for doing this is Windows Update thinks you already have the update or thats what I think is happening.
  9. asubaseball727 ; If you no longer have this printer delete it & reboot. If you do in device manager find the printer & check disable in this profile /reboot & try standby if it works then you need to update your driver or if you still have the floppy or cd that came with the printer you can run it & see if it fixes a corrupt file for the printer.

ROM-DOS ;So you are practically sitting on top of it.I wonder if it does have FIOS out & in to it. If it does I would think this would speed data up even if it uses a copper line to & from you. There isn't much information on how this affects dial-up.But it should make data in & out of the terminal fast so the bottleneck is mostly in the copper line & 56K modem.Good to know where it is .Knock on the door & ask for a tour. The worst they can say is no. boywonder; Those are modem diagnostics I used to have some info on interpreting it but I couldn't find it.Some more commands you can try from hyperterminal are: AT#UG AT#UD AT&V1 AT%L AT%Q ATY11 All of them may not work depending on the modem. On the other question : No there is nothing you can do to the phone box outside to change from voice to data. This would have to be done by the phone company because the change is not in the box but along the line or loop to the telco.About all you can do at the box (NDI) is make sure it is grounded well & there is no corrosion on its terminals. If you can use good quality cable to your PC jack & your other phone jacks for that matter.Like a CAT3 or CAT5 twisted pair phone cable. These help lower line noise & other EMI picked up by the cable. One other hint is make sure your modem is the only thing plugged into its jack or module.Your PC or modem may let you plug a phone into it but don't do that.Plug a remote phone into another jack in the house & use that. I will see if I can find some info on the diagnostics.

ROM-DOS ;You could try but I doubt it will work. I used the CO finder for Lacey I didd a screen shot with Google maps of the area the Qwest CO is supposed to be in Lacey 1311 College SE is the address listed.

ROM-DOS ;Less than a mile not bad That means you don't have any load coils to go through. It should be all copper telephone cable to the telco.

ROM-DOS : At dslreports there is a link in the CO finder called CO Distance this will take you to a page where you put in your zip code address

ROM-DOS : I don't know but I guess that would be possible.A dedicated data only line should give you DSL type speed if your modem could send it that fast.I really haven't researched ISDN much I guess I need to a little anyway. I'm assuming that your PC is on a voice line?So how does your phone sound on this line?If its good & clear then its probably on a voice line or you are really close to the telco. I suspect you are close to the telco or a real good remote terminal. From there I bet your phone company uses FIOS so once your data gets there it is speeded up by this.Thats my theory for the speed you get .If it is this way basically it is a short POTS loop connected to FIOS.

boywonder ;Yeah at that distance you are probably getting the best speed you are going to. Still tweaking what you can helps.Try thr IRQ tweak ROM_DOS posted if you haven't.One of the problems with distance is the phone company puts load coils on the line to improve voice quality.Voice quality is their main goal not data transmission each load coil slows your speed some at the distance you are you probably have 4 on your line.At further distances I understand they add a range extender these are really supposed to be data killers I have never had one on my line so I don't know if they do.What dial-up users at long distances from the telco need are data only lines not meant to carry voice..As far as I know telephone companies don't offer these. At least to dial-up this would be simular to DSL or ISDN I think.

boywonder ;I don't really know anything about Eskimo maybe ROM_DOS does if I lived in the Washington area I would try nocharge like he has.It isn't available to me in Texas.I use nts-online.net it's Ok but could be better. My best connect speed 46 usually 41 or 42 but this is good since I am 26500 feet from the telco.I can use DUN which allows me to tweak or I wouldn't get the speed I do.My ISP says I should only get about 28 at this distance. So 46 is good for a lot of dial-up . On the second question I use AVG too.I use Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal & Spybot S&D for spyware.I use Agnitum Outpost firewall.I also use SpywareBlaster.
  20. I thought I would put in my 2 cents worth.I have a friend that has an 8 ft diameter older Television receiving dish.It is mounted to a 12 foot X 6 inch diameter steel pole the pole is anchored or braced to the corner of his house & the dish is at roof level.I live in the Texas Panhandle & this dish has experienced 70 to 80 MPH winds & has been mounted this way about 12 years without problems.
  21. resopalrabotnick ; I understand to some extent the problem is using decimal system math to convert binary..I still need to learn more about binary. So the 8.192 would be the correct conversion?
  22. I have been reading posts that suggest 8.192 is the correct multiplier/divider depending which direction..Between Kbps & kB/s.I used 8 because 8 bits(( = 1byte(.Since both are already K I thought 8 was correct.Since 1024B =1KB then 8 X 1024 =8192 so 1KB = 8192b..To get the conversion to K 8192 is divided by 1000 to get 8.192Kb..I still don't know why 1024 isn't used to divide it which would be 8. So if 8 X 12.23 is correct then the speed is 97.84 If 8.192 is correct then 8.192 X 12.23 is 100.188
  23. insideout ;There are members that could awnser better but I think that Verizon could tell you your line or loop legnth.Basically even with DSL the shorter the loop the faster the connection. The fact that you have DSL shows that you are close enough that they sell it to you. Verizon probably uses the local phone companies lines though..They could run all their own or they could even be your local phone company. As for the tweaks working for a freind that lives close. If he has the same connection as you(same caps) then the same tweaks should work. There are a lot of things that could cause the two of you to get different speeds like a different modem,PC,router, software,or cables used to name a few. If Van didn't give you the correct cablenut settings for your DSL then ask him again he's usually very helpful.
