cholla got a reaction from CA3LE in Happy Turkey Day!
CA3LE thanks for combining my posts the .GIF was an afterthought.
Since Thanksgiving is finished for this year I thought I would link an old topic,
I must have PMed water the complete instructions.
I though they were all in the topic but they were not.
Any way she followed them close enough & said her turkey turned out well.
I've cooked about 36 more turkeys this way since the topic.
I wish I still had the complete instructions written.
I do not need them for myself but if anyone else wanted them.

cholla got a reaction from CA3LE in Event Veiwer error
CA3LE,
I thought the same.
Since I do power all equipment off whenever I go to bed.
I worked with this some more & found the cause & a solution.
The cause was my OOMA Telo.
When starting my modem , router , & the OOMA Telo they are on their own separate Power strip.
This is so I can start them first & power cycle them without shutting down my computer if I want to.
Then I turn on a different power strip for my computer.
What was happening is the OOMA Telo started first and received 192.168.1.2 .
My computer Network Card wanted 192.168.1.2 but had to accept 192.168.1.3.
As far as I can tell my network card was denied 192.168.1.3 at first then received it.
So my computer & network card worked & showed 192.168.1.3 using ipconfig /all .
The solution was going into my router.
Then using Address Reservation for a higher IP Address 192.168.1.25 for example.
I also set the same in the OOMA Telo as a 'Static IP Address".
Now no more error shows up even after several reboots.

cholla got a reaction from CA3LE in test speed error
CA3LE I decided to install a fresh Firefox portable also.
Something must have corrupted this browser also.
The fresh copy seems to work for the tests.
I ran my antivirus & it did not find anything.
So I do not know why the portable browsers got corrupted.
For right now the problem is gone.
I also tried the corrupt version again & it has the lag problem.
So it has to be a corrupt file in it.

Thanks CA3LE,
I pinged dallas.testmy.net the results in latency were about the same as in the image I posted.
So close enough for me.
I finally checked out the location under your avatar.
I don't know exactly where the problem was but I suspect a corrupt file in the Opera Portable folder.
It seems to be doing the tests now without the pause & incorrect very fast speed.

This is a video of the odd behavior in my test & CA3LE forum post:
TMN(02).mkv
Only in Opera portable .

cholla got a reaction from CA3LE in What does ISP mean by "filter" rendering modem incompatible?
Cool on the FREE dial-up.
Even more that it always gave you 56K.
I was sometimes able to connect at 56K but most of the time less.
I never used any dial-up modem that was not 56K.
A good friend of mine was into the bulitin boards.
He had a modem that he layed the old style telephone headset into.
I believe it was 9600 baud but may have been even slower.
I got started with the Internet which was later.
I listened to 4 of the different dial up sounds on the wiki.
I will give the rest a listen to later.

cholla got a reaction from tdawnaz in Tommie Gorman
Sorry to hear about Tommie.
WE had kept in touch even by email but that slacked off & I guess is had been longer than I thought.
He was always very fond of his daughters.
Loved the USA.
I don't do Facebook or any of that type social media.
So I would never have seem it on those.

cholla got a reaction from tdawnaz in ROCO (Roy Collins)
RIP ROCO .
I communicated with ROCO by email for a while.
Both that way & on the forum we discussed many things.
He really liked his Citroen cars.
I must have emailed something that pissed him off.
He suddenly stopped answering emails from me.
I sent about 4 more emails to see if I could find out the reason.
Then a couple of more times over several years but no response.
I didn't want to spam ROCO.
I guess he had his reasons.

@tdawnaz
I'm sure it was something I wrote I just never found out what.
ROCO had even sent me a new email address when he changed ISPs.
We had several emails over a couple of years then none.

cholla got a reaction from xs1 in Avast Free AV warning in Event Viewer
I posted this on the Avast forum:
After being ask some questions about Avast version,Other AV & Malware programs, & OS.
This was the answer I got:
Note nowhere was my question about the DNS server Avast was trying to use answered.
I wanted to know why Avast was attempting to "Phone Home".
I have all the send information & the like turned off in Avast.
In doing some Searching I found this similar URL.
Either click on it or copy & paste it.
http://ip-info.ff.avast.com/v1/info
You will get some information about your location & other things.
So it appears Avast is sending information home.

I'm not now nor have I ever been a member of Facebook,Twitter, etc.
I have no plans to ever be.
They have their own political agenda.
One that is usually opposite to mine.
So I like forums.

cholla got a reaction from mudmanc4 in Remember when ....
I looked through my old download installers I have saved.
I have the 4.08 installer that shows 2007 as the date I downloaded it.
I don't have CableNut installed on my computers any more.
I bet it is still on my mothballed IBM with Windows 98 SE on it.
It's probably been 3 or 4 years since I booted it.
It booted fine but surfed very poorly.
No web site likes even the latest version of a browser that Windows 98SE will run,
Which is some old FireFox portable.
I keep it so if I want to run some old program if I need to.

cholla got a reaction from Joanie in Newbie waving hello!
Welcome to the forum.
I would search for & read some reviews recommended modems for AT&T DSL .
There probably is a better one.
I had AT&T DSL a long time ago .
I am in town so I got the paid for speed.
This may not work for you & AT&T may not offer this any more.
I dropped my landline but kept DSL.
This allowed me a dedicated DSL line with no filters needed.
This did get the speed to the max paid speed fairly constantly.
I went to cell phone only for a while.
Then I went to VOIP with Skype.
It worked OK since I didn't video Skype.
I have cable now & I use an OOMA Telo for my VOIP.
I believe it will also work with DSL.
I doubt the Firestick will ever stream well with DSL.
I dropped any satellite or cable TV .
I have a good antenna & get my TV OTA.
For YouTube.
Download with a downloader .
Then play with a video player on your computer.
I use this downloader: Just keep using the free starter version. It works well for most things.
https://www.4kdownload.com/products/product-videodownloader
VLC is a good media player that will play most videos.
It works a lot better than WMP.

cholla got a reaction from xs1 in Show off ur desktop
Thanks for the reply.
I just like a good joke if there is one.
I had seen the Bernie meme on the internet.
That's how I knew who it was.
I just thought there might be more when he was on the hood of a Chinese car or at least a car with Chinese writing on the door.
I'm not an expert it could even be Japanese writing.
I don't plan on learning either.
I guess it can be good to know:

cholla got a reaction from mudmanc4 in Speed test doesn't complete
Hi xs1,
On looking at your earlier post You weren't that insulting.
Called Kiwegapawa a novelist although I believe it implies fiction.
Then questioned whether an ISP would bother to do this to one person.
Probably the tin foil hat picture is what got the response.
I was also a moderator here at one time.
Remember the old site all gray with an alien or monster as the logo.
This site did really get busy a while after that.
The movie quote topic & name the song were so busy it was like playing a game.
Too bad it has slowed down so much.

Dial-up settings These are for ME but some will be simular in XP.I hope you find some of it useful.
Download & install Cablenut;use the ccs file for your OS & connection.
I make these adjustments to Cablenut for a custom dial-up file if it doesn't make yours work better you can use the ones that
it puts in automatically. On the RWIN use the one of the settings suggested by
