  1. sounds to me like the people making those claims are the heavily medicated ones.
  2. http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20051116/wl_csm/a100 well, they have the cost down to 130 according to mit. so why not start selling the things at wally world for 260. you buy one and thereby donate one to a child in need. still a good deal. massachusetts governor is looking at a 54 million investment to furnish the state's students with the thing, even allowing them to keep it. if they manage to find a company to produce em large scale i think they could seriously knock the price down to a hundred bucks. some comments i've seen is that the price is in part due to low cost display etc, but i doubt the processor is up to doom3 anyway, so a display on the technological level of say four of 5 years ago which should be dirt cheap to make nowadays should be fine. i wants one! that hand crank charger is sweet!
  3. mh. my bad. i guess it doesn't offer it, nor does it offer a manual input of sat position. however, there are so many sat position calculators out there, you should be able to goole for and find one that suits your needs. i'll give it a quick wirl. edit. there you are. kind of inaccurate input clicking your location on the map but it should help find the bird. http://www.lyngsat.com/tracker/ia8.html this site has the same tracker for a bunch of birds as far as i can tell.
  4. http://laptop.media.mit.edu/ i will say good idea, however i see one flaw. this thing is meant to give students everywhere access to modern tech, and i guess help prepare them for tasks later in life that involve computers. i wonder if microsoft would, if asked, be willing to donate an os and apps, (even if it's something like win98 and an old office with some other stuff thrown in for good measure, since an older os would probably be better suited for such a minimal hardware setup) to use on these things to give a different option than linux and other opensource apps. not to use them exclusively, but to help the users see what the os they will in all likelyhood be working on later in life will look like. but cudos to the handcrank bit. 1 minute of cranking 10 to 15 minutes of operation. too bad they won't be sold in stores, only directly to educational institutions. this thing has a lot of potential beyond just educational use, i think.
  5. i have some domains registered, and one of them is now receiving a bunch of return to sender messages and recipient away from desk notifications supposedly in reply to e-mails sent from the address info@<snipped name>.<snip> the interesting part is of course that the address given as the originator of the message is in one of my domains, and that address doesn't even exist as a mailbox, i just receive them because they get caught by the catchall for that domain. what is slightly worrisome to me is that these e-mails supposedly sent by my domain carry the subject and attachment 'e-mail: just try it...' now, of course this sets all my bells and whistles off, screaming trojan/virus/malware whatever. i know for a fact that none of my comps was on in the timeframe these messages were supposedly sent, at least not all the time, so i'm fairly sure that it is somebody spoofing my data to spread whatwever that attachment is. i have searched for it, but to no avail, does anyone have any info on this new wrinkle?
  6. can't we at least keep the Happy Birthday thread on topic? edit: whaddya talkin 'bout...it is on topic...so just say happy birthday to ca3le...and that'll keep it on topic
  7. how are the g8 summits a bad thing? that is the only thing in which the worlds important governments try to get their act together.
  8. i doubt the lace pabties in the eu and the lace panties in heir member states will risk disrupting web traffic. if they do, it will hurt their economies, and that means they would all of a sudden become very unpopular. they're gonna bitch and moan, but they won't actually do anything unless the us lets em.
  9. frankly i think hell will freeze over before the us relinquishes control of the web or even parts of it to the likes of china, north korea, iran and france.
  10. grizzlies in yellowstone park to be taken off endngered species list. great. hope they have a season for tham. then i can finally fulfill my lifelong dream to hunt bears armed only with a knife wearing just a pair of speedos.
  11. cool soundtrack. stupid punk. http://www.break.com/articles/windowcave.html
  12. well, now for thr obvious question that might make you want to keep the router, doesn' t it have some security functions like port filtering, icmp blocking that are a good idea to have?
  13. yeah. use the cord that was router/modem or the one that was modem pc. one should work. if not, you need to get a crossover ethernet cable.
  14. you either have a crossover from modem to router or not, whichever it is, you need to use the other cable type.
  15. ad supported versions of desktop products? i write about world hunger in ad-word and clippy pops up and says 'you sound hungry, shall i connect to papa john's website?' no thanks, lol.
  16. i agree, although i think that's spelled crack.
  17. it,s too big. i think 100x100 is max
  18. try changing the channel of the wireless. if it's an interference problem that may help also, you don't by chance have rebar in the wall or something of the sort?
  19. there should be a hatch on the bottom that you can open to install ram. that way you can check if you have 2x256 or 1x512
  20. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051114/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_venezuela the scenario. mexico and venezuela come to bloes over their little tiff. in an effort to stabilize the region the US finds an excuse to take out that commie sob chavez. (and ends up sharing venezuelas oil with mexico). this will finally clear the way for the free trade zone.
  21. might cost a bit but contacting your cable provider and having them rig it ight be an option. that way if modem speed does go down they can't say it's not their fault. inquire first if they support inhome installs they do and get a price quote.
  22. that's exactly what i told him days ago.
  23. when in doubt check the mfr's website.
  24. yeah man. Happy Birthday!!! https://join.aarp.org/wpp/enroll.html
  25. ok, if you want to go tweaking your batteries i suggest you head 2 your local model shop and ask for a battery conditioner/charger. these are fairly slick setups to charge the batteries used in R/C models, you might have too build a cradle for the AAA type, but those things can be programmed to fast/trickle/slow charge and even deep cycle batteries and battery packs. good for restoring memoried nicads.
