although most linux distributions are fairly new and try to convert a standard windows 'believer' into a linux person - they mostly do it through basic packages and fancy/nice looking graphics For example, Slackware, is like the oldest linux dist that is still used and maintanined today - dabian seems to be very popular nowdays....ubuntu that you keep mantioning, to me at least, is a dabian knockofff.... I can personally recommend you the following distributions....according to my taste and what i value the most red hat / fedora core mandrake dabian SuSE

...thats totally relative - even the most novice users have certain requirements of an operating systems and they know what they want - not all distributions offer the same packages/librarires - so to say that that linux is the best for novice/medium level users is incorrect - it might be the best for you, but you are not him, her or the next person...get my drift ? hehehe
-
....thats not even possible man - if you think about it logically what is the main source of search engine results !? ...crawlers - they will always exista and always gather information - to delete someones name from a search engine completely means that the website the information is displayed on will have to delete the information also - ......not possible by an outside source

no...thats gentoo hehe

.....those plastic washers usually wouldnt go anywhere....most motherboards use standoff screws to get the motherboard from touching the case

2 cable modems = 2 different isp accounts = 2 x the money
-
i usually tuck away a lot of cables in the empty 'cd drive' slot - its a common spot, that way the air can efficiently circulate throughout the case.....cases have different designs, so when you get ur case and start putting it all together u will see what the best spot is

getting something other than norton would be so much better of a choice - i mean, even free anti virus programs and firewalls work great - norton has too many compatibility issues, you run it while you run some other program and all hell breaks loose....

....you are worrying too much - if you keep this up you will probably mess something up LOL ! - just kidding - but seriously don't worry, its not complicated at all - dont even worry about the whole static electricity issue, just use common sense and it will turn out fine - and yes, working on a desk is the best thing to do, and no, it really doesnt matter on what surface it is ....ive built a lot of pc's but only 3 of those are of my own - and even though i have experience, i still take my sweet a$$ time - i like taking my time and making sure everything is neat and tucked away and stuff like that

im not kidding ya - the fastest ever install of gentoo took 3 hours - thats like a record time - older machines, 500mhz or so, will actually take days to complete and even slower machines will take weeks....not even joking around
-
heck yeah thats what i am looking forward to ....the only catch is that it takes very long time to compile all rpm packages before installing them - from what I have read the reason behind that is that Gentoo is totally customizable to your needs and to your hardware, even to 64bit processors.... I have spoke to few people that have installed it on similar hardware like I have and they say it whould take about 10-12 hours of compiling
-
i have never worried about static while building my pc - ......just think common sense - sit at a desk, put your components on a desk - dont build ur pc on a carpeted floor and you'll be fine - imo, its kinda overrated
-
no one has gentoo ? well, i might just have to be the only one here on testmy
-
...has anyone ever installed a distribution of gentoo - possibly the newest one 2005.1 - if you have, could you please list the specs of your computer and the time it took you to compile/install everything (including kde and such), level 3 install thank you

having more than one core is all about efficiency

It's wierd, but for me it actually slows it down big time - even though it operates at different frequency it somehow messes with it
