CA3LE reacted to Pgoodwin1 in Hi All, I start to get the picture.
I just tried opening a YouTube video on my iPad Air 2 and it only took about 1 second to load and start playing. I was outside on my deck at the fringe of my wireless range. I got RTs of 70 to 200 mS and download speeds of 7.5 to 21.5 Mbps out there.

I typically get 200 Mbps inside the house and RTs of typically between 50 & 100 mS. I’m in the US using Spectrum

@CA3LE - the time-of-day showing for the RT is one hour later than the time for the download test results.

Going by that stats for nerds screen, YouTube is receiving plenty of throughput going by its measurement.  If it's correct, 26Mbps is enough for even 4K streaming, not that I suggest trying that over 4G.

The long delay is likely a problem with the CDN it is trying to connect to.  YouTube first tries connecting to a nearby CDN such as within the Three network.  If that fails, YouTube will then stream from another CDN.

The first thing I suggest is try setting the DNS on that computer to Google's:
Right-click the Wi-Fi icon in your taskbar and then "Open Network & Internet Settings" Click "Change adapter options" In the list of networks, Right-click the WiFi icon and then "Properties" Click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" then click "Properties" Choose the option "Use the following DNS server addresses:". Enter 8.8.8.8 for the preferred and 8.8.4.4 for the alternative. Click OK to both screens.
Try playing a few YouTube videos to see if they start any quicker.  If not, you can undo these steps by following them, but choose "Obtain DNS server address automatically" for step 5.

Another thing you can try is run the utility DNSQuerySniffer, which you can download here.  Choose your Wi-Fi Interface in the list and let it run as Administrator (required to sniff traffic).  Start playing a YouTube video and check the DNSQuerySniffer screen for any hosts ending in "googlevideo.com".  The following shows an example from my end:

If any of the googlevideo hosts have a red dot, this indicates a failed look-up. You can try also pinging the IP addresses under the 'A' column to see if they reply, particularly for the last googlevideo.com one it shows when YouTube is still at the black screen.

With all the hype over data privacy laws here in Europe (GDPR, which stands for General Data Protection Regulation), I can see where non-technical people get confused over using data to refer to integrated circuit data instead of personal data.

The best replacement word I can think of would be "bytes", e.g. "Uploading 12 MB of random bytes..."

To a non-technical person, they will more likely see the word "bytes" as technical jargon than personal data.  Even if they Google (or Bing) the keyword "Bytes", the search results will not be about organisations collecting data, privacy, regulations, etc.

@CA3LE is it just randomly generated bit patterns of ones and zeroes? The word “information” makes it sound like the information has some intelligent content. Maybe use “numbers” or “bit patterns” ?

Yes, keep the window open for the duration of testing.

When running the download or upload speed test in firefox, it isn't changing the file size used for the speed test, causing my download speed to wildly vary from 5mbps to 197mbps. Running firefox 68.0.2 (64-bit) on mac 10.15 Beta (19A536g), ad blockers turned off.

I usually only let people export their own data.

But I see no problem exporting that one ISP for you.  I just don't want people to have a way to extract all of my data.

I need to take a minute to give the export program the ability to do that...  I'll then email you the output.    -- same CSV format as the "export" for your own stats. Give me a little time, I have some things to take care of first.

I think I might make it so that you're able to download those tables right on the site.  I could at least give users access to download their own host and location tables.  Look for that in the future.

CA3LE got a reaction from Sexybeast0 in Mistaken Identity
I often get mistaken for the companies / IP addresses that I provide information on.

    Hey Claudio,
You've mixed me up with a different company.  TestMy.net (my website) provides information on IP addresses, to help people like yourself who are researching.  It's very common for people to mistakenly email me thinking that I'm the contact for the information I provide. Just last week police in Australia mistakenly contacted me thinking I was the person in control of the IP they were looking into.   I know that YHC Corporation addresses are usually VPN, when I connect to Goldenfrog VPN I'm sometimes detected as "YHC Corporation".  The person that was trying to access your gmail was doing so through VPN to try to hide their identity.     One way you can combat this type of attack against your Google services is to use 2-step verification.  Once setup and you try to access gmail from a new device you'll get a txt msg on your phone with a code, like your bank does.  It can be a pain sometimes with applications that require Google passwords, you have to setup App Specific passwords (in a tab on the 2-step page).  Someone would need to have your password AND your mobile device to access your account.   - Hope this helps.  Re-visit TestMy.net and test your Internet speed... see what it's really all about. - Damon - TestMy.net

You can mouse over any displayed speed to have it converted into MB/s.

Soon there will later be an advanced option to have your account display in MB/s by default if you'd like.

I'm with you on this. And I should have thought to come up with it, never crossed my mind.
Back some years ago, I did a lot of jobs in the middle of no where. New construction, no bath, no porta, nothing. So I'd dig a small hole somewhere inconspicuous and have at it. never went so smooth and easy. And never put one thought to it as to why.

Can you please explain why the Singapore server is no longer on the list of servers.  It was there a while ago and is my default server, which luckily I saved at the time.
But now it is no longer there.

Finally, why are the speed tests so variable from one minute to the next...they fluctuate from 2mbps to 100 within several tests over a 10 minute period and have up to 180% variance on the graph.

What makes you think I'm sharing your data with companies?

The latest version doesn't share your information any more than the old version.

The only new privacy thing is consent management.  This is to meet EU's GDPR because TMN uses cookies.  Some cookies are used for personalized are.  But that's not new... what's new is that I'm telling you up front and giving you the option to opt out.

TMN is and will always be on your side and work with your best interest in mind.  I do not sell or disclose any personal information and am completely a 3rd party with no affiliation with any other companies.

My friend Eric did the music for this one... great track bro.

I'm proxied into a connection in the EU (GB to be exact, where you are) for this demonstration.

Notice that as soon as you hit "choices" it deselects everything.

Only users in the EU get this notice.  In the US, I never see this.  The way it previously worked for you was how it still works for the majority of users here today, it creates the cookies and doesn't bug you.  The EU created these guidelines, I'm just one of the few sites adhering to the law... I guess.  I'd think you be used to seeing these kinds of popup's all over the place.  Don't you?  ...the EU made the rule, I'm just trying my best to be legit around the world.

TMN is still the same site you've grown to love.  And I have no plan of changing that aspect.
    Cheers!

By the way... notice the "privacy reminder" from Google at the beginning of that video.  This is the same thing.  And you still use Google, right?

That's awesome to hear!  Saving money AND you're happier with what's being provided.  You're seriously paying $50/month for all 3 services!?!  Wow.  Nice.

Unless you add a bunch more devices, I imagine your plan will serve you very well for a long time.  They'll probably offer better packages for cheaper by the time you need more speed.

While I’ve got a fantastic home network system it’s only as good as the ISP provides. Last Fall I was paying $80/mo. for 400 Mbps. This site demonstrated the “real” situation. Now, because of you guys, I’m paying $50/mo. for Internet + TV + Phone and receiving the same approximate throughput, circa 100 Mbps, instead of 150 - 175 before, + the tv and phone!

The only downside is it’s not as much fun running the speed tests as it had been but also not nearly as stressful.

    Pahoo

Oh, I forgot to mention that the $80 had just gone to $102 in June so I really got stuck for 1 month.

WHat I ca do for now is get screen shots of each and once I can afford a better computer or figure out issues then get videos.
Though I am doing the NW League series which is brodcasted to youtube (Xfinity mondays and CW Trucks on Thursdays)

If you open a YouTube video in your PC browser, you can check roughly what download speed YouTube is receiving.  Just right-click on the playing video and click "Stats for Nerds".  Let the video play for about a minute and you'll see a traffic screen similar to below.  YouTube needs a minimum of 4 to 5 Mbps sustained to play at 1080p.

I am on the Irish 3 network here in Ireland.  Here the YouTube throughput is similar to what I get on TestMy:
