CA3LE reacted to Daniel Simpson in Slow Speeds - Oklahoma
    Hello all,

I currently subscribe to Windstream Communications for my aDSL service. My aDSL speeds are supposed to be 6Mbps/768kbps . I know that I will rarely see my speeds exactly on the nose for those numbers, I've seen my speeds fluctuate all of the time. My upload speed is pretty consistent, but my download speed is...bad.

I've had no problems with Windstream for several years, they have always been pretty reliable with only seeing downtimes when they have scheduled maintenance. Last year in June I started having sporadic download speeds (happy birthday to me). I have been told several times that they see no problems with my connection, of course they are only pinging my modem, I assume, with a small packet. I have had the technicians, the ones that come to my home, tell me the area is oversubscribed. I have had the phone technicians tell me the DSLAM for my area is old, or ill-repaired, or over subbed. I have been told that there have been scheduled maintenance dates to resolve my issue (July '12, Nov '12, Jan '13, Feb '13). I am receiving a $10 a month credit to my account for the issue.

My speeds during the day are acceptable, fluctuating between 4 and 5.5Mbps. My download speeds in the evening are anywhere from .05kbps to 900kbps. It is a bit absurd if you ask me.

    Things I have done.

Scanned/ensured I have no malicious code on my PC (As a information security major I better not have any lol)
Speed Tests on multiple sites including this one
tracert to different web sites - all low ms
ping to different web sites - all low ms
    Power cycled my equipment
    Replaced the modem/upgraded the modem
Checked the customer connections on my home for corrosion

What else can I do to ensure this company fixes their issue. I am about to file with the FCC, BBB, and attend the next city council meeting to see if we can get competition for this company in our town. The only competition they have is a cable company and the cable company is worse (if you can believe that) and the reason I switched to DSL in the first place.

I do play online games, but my priorities are with my online school. Sometimes I have virtual labs, remote sessions, and videos to watch. The best time for me is in the evening when I am home from working.

    What can I do?

CA3LE got a reaction from TriRan in Slow upload, drastically different from other speed tests
Maybe the test they're using multithreads the upload... maybe it only takes the best portion of the result into consideration...

You know that you have a problem, right? You experience this problem all over the place, right? Then you need to tell your ISPs techs that their test is bullshit. They need to hear that EVERY day. Then tell them the alternative that obviously works and reflects the actual health of the connection. TestMy.net  -- They could save their customers from the kind of headache that you're dealing with.

Wouldn't it be easier if they used a test that didn't overstate the connection? The tests they use ignore important factors that reduce your speed, they also multithread which can make things look better... and then they test too close. How can it be a test of the Internet if you're not even leaving your city or state... often with those ISP tests you don't even leave the providers network? How can it be a true test when the results are altered?  We need to make them understand... THAT'S NOT AN INTERNET TEST!  --- maybe that's just my opinion. But you and MANY MANY MANY people tell us that their ISPs test often doesn't reflect the performance they see online or on TestMy.net...

Your ISP shouldn't have to only be upheld to their own standards.  They should be willing to be scrutinized by third parties. I'm up for examination by anyone that wants to.  Get a network inspector of some sort, something that graphs the interface. (Realize that you're not looking for a byte for byte, bit for bit comparison, there are more factors after your interface that result in overhead. So what you read on the interface can be around 5-7% off from the speed that could be perceived by an Internet speed test. But the general plot of the graph and the figures give you more than enough evidence to prove my point.) Now run a test using your ISPs speed test. Compare that graph with the results and you'll find that they HAVE to be calculating on their own algorithm... because it doesn't line up with the interface. Seems to me that ISP tests are often more of a judge of the maximum achievable speed. Now, do the same thing with TestMy.net. You'll quickly realize that I know what I'm talking about here. I have a LARGE number of people that keep me in check, including myself. If I make even a minor mistake in calculation or if anything is off... my inbox lights up light the 4th of July. It's my trusty team of double checkers, you know who you are. I TRULY appreciate their input, listening to them and using their input has made TestMy.net into what I believe is the most accurate and feature laden speed test online. I hope you agree, if not... you must like being lied to.

I'll be posting youtube videos soon where I'll compare the network interface results vs TestMy.net and other popular speed tests. Some of these other tests are really funny. They use laughably small amounts of data for testing and some of them I have no idea where they pull their numbers from... because they don't correspond with anything that's actually happening.  A lot of them will show like 15 Mbps of upload, looks like stuff is happening... all intense...  then I look at the interface and I'm uploading 3.5 kB/s (my idle). Just stupid and that was an ISP test from a top 10 ISP in the US using the most popular speed test software. Then they expect their customers to rely on that information... and then tell their techs to ONLY rely on those results.   .... It's not going to surprise me if a class action is filed when someone proves that they're knowingly providing inflated test results to cut down on service calls. It's a lot easier to blame the problem on everyone else (e.g. "...it's the websites your visiting.") when you have a little test that makes your customers feel like their getting their moneys worth.

CA3LE reacted to mudmanc4 in difference in testmy.net and my browser test
The difference between the two is so small , chances are greater than not , since the browsers dynamic is constantly changing , as the data flow does, that testmy.net is equating the movement with a bit more math. Hence a more true result. Yet at these speeds , discrepancies can vary widely, due to network traffic as well as memory usage on your local machine, not to mention HDD seek times ect.

You should run the auto test for a few hours, and see what the average is.

I'm really shocked comcast is not following standards. Using a 24 bit block instead of a 16 bit. Generally those IP ranges are left for modems, at least in the case were speaking of.

Your local net should look something like  modem IP 10.x.x.xx => gateway - 192.168.1.0=>192.168.1.1 leasing from 192.168.1.2-224.

I'm sure another comcast member will have a real explanation on that, to me it's borked and does not follow IPV4 standards. Really it does , but not.

Power down all machines. Dis connect the cat5 cable ( blue or yellow sometimes grey Ethernet wire ) from the windows 8 machine.

You should reset the modem, if there is a button on the back recessed, hold it in for 20 seconds, then unplug the modem, while continuing to hold the button , plug the modem back in , and continue to hold. 20 second - 20 seconds - 20 seconds.

Before powering anything else up power up the windows8 box, STAY physically disconnected from the modem and find the network connection preferences, set the connection to get an IP via dhcp -- not static.

Then plug the windows8 box into the router/modem/ tower of aweful -- post what happens.

If you cannot get online with that machine , figure a way to get online with another and post up yes ?

BTW - I'm not really that kind, ask my youngest son right now , - just had him do homework he wanted to do  ' later '  lol

CA3LE reacted to nitrosurf in BT, 76mb/s fibre optic running at less than 4mb/s
    Hello all,

Been a long time since I've frequented this site, good to see it's as useful as ever! I've recently aquired a BT Infinity fibre optic line, rated at 76mb/s max dowload speed,19bm/s max upload speed. I've had it installed for about a month and had nothing but trouble with it. The speed is very consistant, unfortunately it is consistantly slow; 3.9mb/s max UP, regardless of the time of day. I am using an AMD Phenom II X4 995 processor with 4 GB RAM on a windows XP Pro operating system. I've never had issue with my hardware and tend to keep it in well fettled form. I am hard wired (ethernet) into the BT router with this machine and all testing is performed with all the other equipment in my home switched off. I get the same results on this site with my partner's rather fetching pink ASUS laptop via the wireless connection also. Streaming is poor, with anything vaguely HD requiring a lot of buffering, and my file download rate very rarely goes beyond 200KB/s on most sites or P2P. XBOX Live also has a habit of randomly disconnecting, and Netflix on the XBOX 360 is usually in 'standard' definition and stops to buffer a LOT. I've had some less than useful advice from BT over the phone and had an engineer visit (whilst my partner was home and I was in work). Both the operators and the engineer have confirmed that yes, we do have an issue but haven't been specific as to what it is. Most annoyingly when they 'speed test' my line with BT's own boradband tester my line reads as having a stable 39mb/s UP 18mb/s DOWN connection, which is quite obviously a load of old tosh. Does anyone here have any suggestions as to what to do? Is there anything I can do to speed my end up?

    Thanks in advance!

    Liam

CA3LE reacted to Pgoodwin1 in Need Router Suggestions for RCN 50MBPS
There's a site called SmallNetBuilder that has very good technical reviews by knowledgeable people. This is some research I did about a year ago. I look for products that have less than 20% of their reviews at 1 or 2 stars out of 5. Anything more than that is a red flag to me that something is wrong. Then I calculate a price per performance ratio in $ per star which is an indicator of how much I'm paying for quality.

WAN to LAN price/performance - these were the routers with the better price per performance ratio as rated on SmallNetBuilder's site.

    In order of $/star:

ESR9855G EnGenius Multimedia Enhanced Wireless N Gaming Router with Gigabit $20.50/star. $82 Newegg, 4.5 stars/22reviews on Google, 3. 1-2 star reviews 14%, probably not enough reviews to be meaningful.

    E3200 Cisco High Performance Dual-Band N Router gigabit $27.25/star $109 minus $30 special Amazon 4 stars/142 reviews, 15 1-2 star reviews 11%, 4.5 stars on Google/485 reviews

    RT-N56U ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless-N Router $31/star $124, 4 stars/449 reviews, 82. 1-2 stars 18%

    Airport Extreme Base Station 5th gen, A1408, MD031LL/A, $170, 4.5 stars/135 reviews, 16. 1-2star 12%, 10 1-star $37.78/star

    WNDR4500 Netgear. N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router $45/star. $180 4 star/160 reviews, 42. 1-2 star. 26%

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
not ranked in any particular order

    Product HD Media Router 2000 DIR-827 gigabit D-Link $142. 3.5 stars/6 reviews amazon

    Product N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 Company NETGEAR $126. 3.5 stars/168 reviews, 39 1-star Amazon

Product Maximum Performance Wireless-N Router Linksys E4200 gigabit Cisco $159 - $30 gift card special, 3.5 stars/385 reviews/100 one -two star reviews

    Product 300Mbps Wireless N Router with Gigabit Switch. ESR9850 EnGenius $60 amazon. 3.5 stars/22reviews

    Product N600 wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router. WNDR3700v2 Netgear. $99 Amazon, 3.5 stars/781, 155. 1-star

    Product N750 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router
    F9K1103 Belkin $100 Amazon 3stars/129 reviews, 50 1-2star

They not only have good reviews on SmallNetBuilder, but they have some great performance plots of a lot of products. I used their price/performance plots to select routers to go assess for price and user experience/quality (star ratings). There's likely new ones on the plots since a year ago besides the ones I looked at above.

Note that the LinkSys E4200 did appear to have some issues, as 100 of the 385 reviews were 1-2 stars. However, that was a year ago, and maybe they've released some firmware updates that fixed their issues.

Note that the Cisco E3200 though was rated very good, and one of the best buys at the time. So go figure.

I ended up buying the Apple AirPort Extreme which is a great value. People always bad mouth it for being expensive, but it looks very competitive when you start assessing the user experience and quality ratings....one of the top 4 after I got done looking at all of those above. I do have 2 Macs, 2 iPhones, and 2 iPads in the house, so I was really just trying to assure myself that it was worth the investment. It has worked flawlessly for a year. The other ones at the top would likely be very good choices as well, excepting maybe the first one (EnGenius) because at the time it really didn't have enough reviews to be relevant-it likely has a lot more reviews by now.

Yes, very well said RTB... having said that though, I do plan on offering a test that does this. Coast to Coast speed test that will give you an idea of your average speed nationally. I've actually already been building the backend with this in mind so that when I'm ready it will be relatively easy to piece together. So look for this in the near future.

My provider isn't actually The Planet anymore, it's Softlayer. The Planet was awesome but Softlayer is far more powerful. They bought them out a couple years or so ago. DNS still resolves to the old name. After my next server upgrade the name should resolve correctly to Softlayer. Last time I upgraded The Planet gave me such an awesome deal it's been hard to beat it... for the longest time I went to their website and to make a comparable build it was like $1000/month. By the last time I got a new server I had been with The Planet for over a decade... so I was able to negotiate an awesome deal. Prices are coming down though so I'm thinking it's almost time for another upgrade. I'm getting at least 16 cores and solid state drives this next time around. It's going to be beast! queries so fast my users will be like

... Congested routes aren't something you want to compensate for in your results. That's valuable information... that's part of your performance. It often times doesn't effect your connection across the entire Internet... but if the congested route is close to home it can. If it's effecting your speed to TestMy.net's server.... it's effecting your speed to other sites as well. I purposely pick popular hubs that have high bandwidth. Let me put it this way, in the Dallas datacenter where TMN is hosted... there are 104,000+ servers. Some host single sites... some can host hundreds of sites on one server. These generally aren't small no name sites either, people with small sites don't tend to spend that kind of money on a dedicated server solution. ...... so, if your speed is effected to TestMy.net, you're speed is effected to other sites as well. The Coast to Coast test isn't going to be intended on compensating, it's more to give you a broader picture of your Internet speed.

There will be multiple / mass delete and select options in the next database upgrade. I should have that for you all soon. But no, I'm not at all concerned about the space taken up. I encourage my users to never delete records. It's kinda cool to look back your history. Especially once you've gathered years of results. I'm more concerned about my bandwidth... Storage is never an issue. My main server has 500 GB free on raid 5 SSD... It will take billions of entries before space would be an issue. Bandwidth on the other hand...

I'm going to have to order 10+ TB in advance for next month if I want to get it at half price. Luckily the public supports my advertisers so I can afford the kind of hosting this site needs to be accurate and also support so many users. ... thanks everyone. I promise to continue developing this as well as upgrading my hardware and networking as demand rises. Traffic to TestMy.net is hitting harder than it has in many years... I figure without changing anything I can comfortably support 5X current traffic. Well over 100k users a day. And if we need more test resource... I'll put it online in an instant. Just keep spreading the word. TestMy.net is word-of-mouth only. I appreciate the support.
