    Connection issue

I edited my response above... Try the ipconfig first. If you want to be sure its gone, download trojanHunter and scan with that. www.trojanhunter.com after the connection is restored.

What trojan was it? Get to a command prompt Start>Run type in cmd then click run then type at the c: prompt: ipconfig /renew After it is done, type ipconfig /all If the ip address is 0.0.0.0 or 169.x.x.x then there is a problem connecting to your router. let us know how it goes.
  3. I agree with ghostmasters definition, but would go further to say that the term hacker can also include persons who push software to perform in ways that they were not originally intended. I also believe that the definition of a true "White hat hacker" should include the caveat that if they have not been hired by a firm or been requested to perform their "magic" on a system, they are violating the law and should be prosecuted, even if they are doing it, "just because they can" and don't have anything better to do. I would not appreciate an intruder that just opens the door of my house, comes in and walks thru my house and then just leaves after looking around for a bit. Thats why they are called intruders or home invaders......... White hats are just a lesser evil of the hacker breed. They are not to be glorified and acknowledged as do-gooders in my view. The true white hat works only when asked to or uses their own equipment, not others, to practice their trade. Edit: I should probably qualify my response so as not to offend anyone. I've read quite a few posts on the net that glorify white hat hackers that break into systems that are not their own just because they can and I don't agree with this. They should be prosecuted and the definition of "white hat hacker" should not include those that do this. Maybe have another group, such as grey hat hacker, the ones that live on the edge, breaking into other peoples systems but don't do damage or use the information that they illegally obtain.

    Many Problems

What is the name of the HP program? Also, how much ram is being reported in windows vs how much you're supposed to have? (to see this go to Start Menu>Settings>Control Panel> then double click on System icon). The ram will be reported on that screen. If the amount reported in Win is different than the installed amount your supposed to have, there is a problem with your memory. Also, check the Device Manager tab and see if there are any devices with yellow or red marks on them. You can download another registry cleaner, such as tweaknow at www.tweaknow.com and run a reg scan. It may find something that your other scans have missed.

    Many Problems

If you run the machine for a while in Safe Mode, does it do the same thing? If it doesn't then it most likely is a software issue of some sort but if it does, it could be a piece of hardware, such as a bad memory chip, video card, etc.
  6. My results: You got 10 right! Excellent, you have the makings of a proper propeller head Guess I'm a geek tooooo.......

AIM can be exploited to download viruses, etc. You can download Hijackthis from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php Unzip and run a scan then copy your results and paste them into this analyzer: http://hjt.iamnotageek.com/ If it finds any problems and your not sure whether you should remove the entries just post the results from the analyzer if you want.

Had you installed or updated any new software or hardware just prior to it starting to act up?
  9. True for the op sys, but it could be that if you don't run Windows or some other OS, then you're using Linux.... With Coke, they were forced to change the mix due to the new laws which made cocaine illegal, which was then replaced with caffeine. The rest of the mix hasn't been changed, at least that I have heard of. Oh yeah, you have Coke zero, and the like, but the original recipe for coke hasn't changed since inception, excepting the cocaine withdrawal ........
  10. Actually, he didn't create it, he bought it when he was just a young lad and just built it up from someone elses original creation.

You can try clearing your disk cache for IE, which I assume you are using for your browser. Try booting into safe mode then run your scans again from there. To get to safe mode: as your machine starts up, hit the F8 key to get the list of boot options, then select safe mode. Make sure you have the latest updates for your scanning software before re-scanning.
  12. You can check to see if the software you will be running is hyperthreading or not. The software programs have to be written to take advantage of this technology. Check with the vendors of your software. As far as cpu and memory, more is better but if you select a lesser processor, buy a machine which will take the faster processor and allow you to upgrade with more memory as well if you find down the road that you need more processing speed and memory space. Can you take the word off your old machine and install it on the new one you want to buy? If you are in school, you can get a student edition of MSword (office) for pretty cheap. Eligibility: http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/students/doyouqualify.mspx Pricing: http://www.microsoft.com/office/word/howtobuy/default.mspx You could also buy an older version, say 2002 for much less: http://www.nextag.com/microsoft-office-2002/search-html About half way down the list is word 2002 only. Check out ebay for deals on Office as well. This is a site I use for where I work and this article seems to say the cost is going down sharply in the near future on Office XP suite for students: http://www.techsoup.org/news/news_article.cfm?newsid=760&cg=searchterms&sg=student%20AND%20version
  13. If you use a dns server that is closer and under less of a load, the name to ip address translation will take less time, thus you will connect to the requested server (web page) quicker. If your dns server is slow, you will have to wait for the translation, making your connection to the web sites' server slower when you first try to browse to that site.
  14. Been running FF for a year or so. Not even close to being the resource hog that IE is.
  15. Bridging I believe just ties two LAN segments together. Don't see how it would increase your speed. Your computer can only use one connection to the bridged LAN/WAN. You could add another nic and multi-home your machine but I'm not sure if this would speed you up either.
  16. :haha: If you sell it, they will buy...... Gotta get me one of those for those triple burrito nights cruisin' down the road!!
  17. Ahhhh, Hiccups....... You could try changing your duplexing to half duplex to see if that would rectify it........
  18. If there is no outward damage (cracks, liquid squirting, etc,) then you could say you just closed it and when you opened it, it didn't work. If there is outward damage, then one of the hinges must have jammed and it broke when you were closing it.
  19. LOL Disconnects suck. Usually I can't get over 3300-3500kBs. from Adelphia. Before they "balanced the lines" in my area, I was hitting 4100, sometimes 4200. I've been told there are only about 1500 users on my leg of their plant, so I don't get much latency.
  20. This is the best speed I've gotten in a long time. I'm on 4/384 with Adelphia :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 3953 Kbps about 4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 483 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Thu Sep 22 2005 21:44:13 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) Bottom Line:: 71X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.12 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 10.17 % faster than the average for host (adelphia.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-L27YEWNVP
  21. Oh. I missed it. That happens on occasion though.............
  22. There is always a risk but if you find a seller with a good clean record, you should do ok. All of my ebay purchases have gone well.
  23. I talk to myself on occasion, but I try to avoid it in public, billybob........
  24. Put a good spin on it. New is good. That old laptop was having problems anyway, wasn't it? Lock up for no reason, hard drive would just crunch and crunch, and what was that electrical crackling you hear last week, anyway???
