you would be surprised how much it is like XP, minus the whole lack of security.. Most patches dont require a reboot and there are updates constantly depending on what you have running on your server.

that is a really good question... I have not been following the longhorn server development at all.. I guess it is in beta 2 right now.. or at least that is what google is bring up..

Welcome to the site TechLady.. Umm.. not a huge surprise about the Freedom software.. Adelphia, my guess, has servers that authenticate the License for the software with servers on their network.. Since you are no longer on their network you are no longer eligible to use Freedom.. It isn't Time Warner's fault... My guess is that bought out the service area an not the equipment that services that area.. As far as the speed issue.. You are most likely going to see an increase shortly once TW figures out how to balance the new area on their hosts and nodes. Give it like 3-4 weeks before you should see normal service again.

the reason for this is Comcast's Speedboost.. You are testing with a really small file.. If you test with a bigger file you will get a more accurate result which is how the Dallas main servers for TMN are setup.. If you go to fast though the test then the test size it increased to get an accurate test..

I am sure that it does.. I thought that I had the 2.0 one installed on this machine but it doesnt look like I do..

Well a little info on FTP.. FTP is extremely insecure.. You are passing user name and password back and forth in plain text.. so if some one were to sniff your connection they would see the user name and password in clear text. So I would recommend not using FTP by itself.. You can get FTPS which runs over SSL or even better SFTP which is Secure FTP that uses SSH.. Depending on what platform you are running one may be easier to implement than the other.. As far as securing the host.. If you do decide to go with just straight FTP you are going to want to specify IP address or ranges of addresses that are allowed to use the server. This can be done in the configuration files, at least for linux.. I know that 2000 server and 2003 server you can specify users and IP ranges for those users.. The final step that I would take would be to implement a disk quota system.. This would prevent someone from dumping say 60 gb of porn or warez onto your machine and using it as a host.. That is what everyone thinks.. It will never happen to them.. That is exactly what the hackers look for.. It is your responsibility to secure your box.. Cause if your IP comes back as a host for an attack or illegal activity unless you can prove that the box was exploited via logs..

How close are you to the Testmy.net servers?
Swimmer replied to bryanlautt's topic in Show off your speed
I will put up a locate function that will give you a distance.. Distance does have a factor but if you are in the US or Canada you should be on a fast enough backbone that it shouldn't make a difference. http://itswag7.homeip.net/locate.php This is a straight shot measurement.. -
Even if there is a PS3 in it?

Test from your desktop?? like from Active desktop display? My guess is that there is some caching involved..

Here is a good read.. A review from compiled off of data from AV-test.org.. http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm Kinda shocked at the results.. I have moved from Norton to Triend Micro an am now on Kaspersky.. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages.. It all comes down to what suits you best.

Alright I looked up some of the tech stuff posted on the net about "SpeedBoost".. What it looks like they are doing is taking left over bandwidth and applying it to large file downloads... This boost lasts 1/4 to 1/2 of the total file size.. I am not sure how they are calculating this but that is what they are saying.. So the amount of boost depends on network load completly.. My guess is that you can not turn it off.. BTW it only applies to HTTP/FTP traffic not torrent or p2p

So it is working or not? The reason the belkin isnt working, my guess would be, that it isnt set up correctly.. I dont know if they come with a gaming mode built in or not. However, if you were to move your IP into the DMZ you would have no problems hosting games or what not on your computer. The other option would be to attach another router to the belkin.. If you were to do that you would need to take the Linksys and plug it into the Belkin.. You would want to run the ethernet cable from one of the switch ports on the Belkin to the WAN port on the Linksys.. There by making two different networks.. one for the linksys 192.168.1.1 and the Belkin will be 192.168.2.1.. You are going to want to assign a Static IP from the Belkin to the MAC address of the Linksys.. This way your IP address for the WAN will never change making it possible to place one IP address into the DMZ and never have to worry about it again. BTW welcome to the forum!

I never had issues with torrents on my 524... Might want to try and power cycle the router.. Also might want to try uTorrent.. and enable encryption on the connection... There are some ISPs out there that are filtering bit torrent traffic causing huge slow downs..
-
You done need to be a member.. http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version#Downloads that should allow you to download the CD ISO.. I would highly recommend Bit torrent and the ISO files are very well seeded..
-
well it looks like you are dropping packets into chicago.. which is out of your control.. The only way to improve pings is to play on a closer server... My guess is that what ever server you are playing is on a fairly busy network..

Dont use SuSE 10.1.. The updater is broken and it doesnt have the latest GUI which is a lot better! Here is a guide to dual boot 10.1 but it should be exactly the same as 10.2.. http://kimharding.net/dual_boot/index.html

AbbieDoobie, welcome to the forum! I am going to guess that you have a WRT54G from Linksys? There is a known issue with torrents and large files.. You need to check Linksys' website for the latest firmware update..

I am not sure for the reason for the high reading.. but you are well below the thermal limits for the CPU.. There has NEVER been a processor from AMD that has needed any other heat sink other than the manufactures for normal operation.. You max core temp can go to 69*C.. at which point the core will melt.. That is 156.2*F.. So heat is really not an issue for you at this point.. You might want to get a few case fans.. to get warm air out and cool air in..

Wow.. Check the plugs.. maybe even move the drive to a different position on the cable, assuming that it is and IDE cable and not SATA.. Are there any weird clicking noises coming from the drive? I have never heard of a drive dumping like that unless it was about to fail or in the process of failing..

802.11n is rated to 540Mbit/s.. I think 1GBit/s is a little ways off.. And 802.11n is still not ratified.. (I think it is in a 30 day performance review for Draft 2 right now..) There was a system that was able to hit 1GBit back in 2005ish.. Using MIMO, what 802.11n is based on, but it was also running at 100MHz.. Where as consumer product run from about 20-40MHz.. No doubt that ISPs will have wireless backbone capable of this type of speed.. but for the consumer level you have to minimize everything and make it reliable..

I am sure there is a was as starship pointed out.. the issue then become copy write and legality of the download..
