Hey email me the info for that team thing again... If we can get most of the people on this forum to join we could kick some serious ass... -
So... You have deleted the history all of the cookies and even spyware... I can still tell you where you have been on the internet.. Thanks to microsoft who decided that it would be important to give parents and others a way to find out about you activites on the internet even after you "deleted" everything... Well you have not unless you reinstall your os everytime you are finished surfing the net... Wether this is cause you do want people to know where you have been or just for your safety this tip can erase all tracks of you internet adventures... It is called index.dat... I mentioned it in one of my other posts about spyware I think... What this does is make a back up file to every cookie and site that you have visited, I think it does it every day I am not sure though... I know you are all dying to know how to remove this little gem... 1. Restart your computer then hit F8 while it is booting up... 2. Enter Safe Mode with Command Prompt 3. When you get the command prompt type del index.dat /s this will erase but not kill the file.... It will be regenerated when you boot the next time... You can not do this while you are normally in windows because the file is being accessed all of the time.. If you are interested in seeing what is in this file open it with notepad to see the criptic version, great way to see what your employees or friends are up to..., or download this little program..http://www.exits.ro/index-dat-viewer.html This can make it fun just to see what people are up to on the net... Just though I would share...

my guess is that is some type of trojan or spyware that is too new for the spyware detectors to pick up... You might want to try disabling it in the registery so that when you start your computer it doesnt run... If I were you I wouldnt remove it by simply deleting it... That folder is really sensitive. The best be is to run a virus scan with updated defs and maybe give it a few weeks then run a adware scan... If this is really bothering you... the only other thing that you can try is running a repair session from the windows xp cd... This should repair any files that dont belong there in that folder... However I have seen computers programs stop working after this occures... The best bet if none of the other stuff works is to just reformat and reinstall.. Pain in the ass ya... I will continue looking around to see if I can find anything... post some more detail about the file and what folder it is in.... If none of that works submit it to symantec...

Looking good.... I am not into all that tweaking stuff... It doesnt seem to help up here in chicagoland.. That upload is really something to be proud of! I wish I had that! That is a great speed from COMCAST!! Here is mine: ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 4249 Kbps about 4.2 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is: 519 KB/sec Auth Code: 2063736 (validate at http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 76 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 1.97 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?ta=&top=&align=&num=2063736&kbps=4249&gen=gen&a=1.14285714285714&b=2.28571428571429&c=1145.14285714286

The only other thing that i can think of is to go into the router software and make sure that you dont have port 25 opened by accident... You also might want to check for spyware... I surfed over to linksys and looked around a bit... I also looked at some manuals... Under UPnP forwarding.. in the web utility that Linksys provides with the router is a list that has all of the common protocalls... disable smtp.. that should take care of that port.. However, you might loose the ability to send mail... So you can either see if your isp has a pop3 address or if there is a different way to connect to get to your mail... If neither are true then you are just going to have to turn it on when you need your mail and then turn it off.. it is really hard these days to secure a computer to the point where it totally invisible on line. If that is what you are after you mind as well put your computer into a vault remove the 3.5 drive and cd drives and never connect to the internet... Pretty boring... Give that a try also what model number do you have of the linksys router?

Linux is a beast when it comes to the details.... It is far less forgiving than windows... If you check the manufacturer's website they will tell you if the version that you are going to use supports all of your hardware... I know that some of the Nvidia based boards have problems...

http://grc.com/su-evilportmon.htmOk I did some research on port 25 SMTP... It turns out that port 25 is used to send mail... If you are using a mail client like outlook express or endora, I guess, and your ISP doesnt give you a url to log into you mail, mail.yourisp.com. The reason that port 25 came up as a security problems in that port scan is because that is generally how most of the SPAM get to your computer. Most of the ISPs are not blocking that port for their customers so that SPAM is reduced... If that port is open my only suggestion would be to put a router with a firewall on it inbetween the modem and your computer. As of right now I can not find a way to shut off that port... other than to install a router firewall.. I ran a scan on a different site and I can up with nothing open... I also recieve no spam to my computer... The idea behind port 25 is that all the spammer has to do is ping your ip address... see if port 25 is open... then start sending you all the free stuff you dont want. Here is a basic place that explains this in more detail.. http://grc.com/su-evilportmon.htm Here is a decent "port blocker" http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pblock.htm

That is interesting that your computer ran slower in Linux than it did on windows.. Most of the time computer tend to run as fast if not faster in linux. If your connection suffered it could be because you had an onboard ethernet card that wasnt supported you by disto or you were using generic drivers because you pci card wasnt supported...

anything for making a computer go faster!!

Hey dont worry about the upload... Anything faster than 256kb/s is really good... Most of use would love to have your upload.. As far as cable go it is the fasted medium for broadband internet access under $100. You can go T1 or T3 but then you are looking in to the $1000's per month... If you read my article about the new d-link broadband products you would find that the future is leading to home consumers making the switch to fiber optic broadband.... This doesnt mean that you should go out and buy some $3000 Cisco fiber router but eventually we will have speeds in the area of 30mb/s download and 5 to 10 mb/s upload... They are currently testing in China and Japan along with some selected places inside the US.

First of all welcome to the Forum... Windows is the problem.... XP is one of the most stable os out there... The only thing that would produce this kind of situtation would be if you browser was hijacked, if you open your browser and it took you to some page you didnt want to go to, or you had tons of spyware running. My guess would be a little of both. Also hearing that you windows could only launch 4 ie browsers before crashing means that you memory was being eaten up by something... If I were you I would reinstall Windows XP fresh, get rid of everything(CEAR THE HARD DRIVE), then install a good anti virus and a really good adware/spyware remover. Did you ever check your computer for spyware? Did you ever use a different browser other than IE? That is my suggestion.. Hell if you like Linux that is great... It is free but a pain in the ass to do somethings that are really simple to do on a windows machine. 5/1/04 Ok I found the way to remove Java VM http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/38206/38206.html I would recommend everyone to do this... Java VM is no longer used... Java Script is now the standard and more sucure than VM.. VM is how you browser gets hijacked almost 90% of the time.

New D-Link Product to increase broadband speed
Swimmer replied to Swimmer's topic in Make it Faster...
most of the stuff is beta tested there because it is built there... Cheaper for D-Link and it provides real world testing instead of having it shipped here for a period when support would be hard to come by. My guess is that there are strict laws about what type of technology China and other countries can have as far as wireless and networking go. I am also betting that there are some differences in the final product. -
New D-Link Product to increase broadband speed
Swimmer replied to Swimmer's topic in Make it Faster...
Not currently... China, Japan, and the USA. I am sure that it will move their shortly... I think the Europe is one of the last testing grounds for pc hardware... I am not sure that this is accurate but it seems that the release dates are much later in Europe than in the states... I will let you know if I hear anything.. -

I agree.. However they are testing in the US right now... so it is some what promissing! -
On April 20th D-Link release a press release stating that they were working on a Fiber to Ethernet product for the home consumer... What does that mean? As stated in the press release it could, " deliver data and information at speeds up to 50Megabits per second or even up to 1 gigabit, this technology clearly represents the next generation of networking." By the way as many of you know that is flying... Right now they are testing in China and Japan along with some major cities. The speeds right now are in the 30's mbs. That is approaching the speed limit of CABLE and is well over the speed of DSL! I have email a represenative that works at D-Link for some more information which i will post here and my site, www.trueopinions.com. This could be really sweet if the quoted speeds are offered by IPSs!

Sata is pretty much to repace the old scsi interface... The scsi is pretty much only for servers and was the first interface to offer raid. Then IDE came out with raid and now we have SATA. Raid 0 is the fastest.. It provides a mirror image on 2 drive and they work in tandom to pull info off. Here are the general specs of different types of Raid: Level 0: Provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disks) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance. Level 3: Same as Level 0, but also reserves one dedicated disk for error correction data. It provides good performance and some level of fault tolerance. Level 5: Provides data striping at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance. The only reason that you would even want raid would be for a server or you are just wanting something that very few people have in their main computers. It can be very cheap... most of the two Raptors and you have a kick ass raid setup.
-
Raid stands for... Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks. It is true that most of the time it is used on servers...but it is becoming more popular for computer geeks and the hardcore speed freaks.
-
yeah they are on a raid system... I think it is 4 250gb... I will check tomorrow...

Seems like that, RCN, are doing something...

Right the PCI Express it due out later after the launch... We need mobos that support pci exress before we can have any hardware. The praise thing always happens... ATI release the 9800xt... All the praise went to that card.. Then the FX5950 came out... Praise switched.... It is back to the old addage that every week something new, faster, and more expensive is out.
