  1. This is my guess... either one of two things happened... 1) NYC's backbone got really loaded or you ISP is having bandwidth problems... 2) You modem got sent a new speed cap packet.. Ca3le might be able to explain more..
  2. That is true... However, it never seems that both companies are in the same generation most of the time. When we had the leap from the TI cards to the FX series that was like compairing apples to bananas... Is it fair to pit a FX 6800 vs. a 9800XT? I think so.. If you are looking for the best card on the market it doesnt matter what generation it is. It is like compairing a BMW to a Ford. You might see BMW technology in a Ford but my guess it that it is "old" technology. Yet both cars are the same model year. This is the most explosive and changing sector in computers. You dont see AMD or Intel releasing new models about every 3-5 months. But ATI and Nvidia can do this because they can afford it. The serious gamer is willing if the increase in the quality and speed are there to shell out $500 for the latest and greatest. Do I think that the standard user needs to shell out $500 for a new card every 3-5 months. Hell no! That is insane and most people will never see the difference between the 9800pro and the 9800xt. Most people dream about owning one! I have no doubt that ATI is going to release a kick ass card on Monday the 26th of April. But it is also going to change computers as we know it. This new card the R880XT is going to be developed on the PCI express standard. Meaning that the 8x AGP version is going to be to slow for what the card can really do. As far as pushing cards to their max I think that we have reached the max on most of the cards that are not Directx 9 compatible. I dont seem many more games being released that are not going to use shadowing or some of the cool other effects. The frame rates might be there but the quality isnt going to be as good as others. If you say that you are not into quality then I have a 8mb ATI AGP card that I would like to sell you...
  3. We have bess.... the programs a BI%$H.... if you are interested in getting around your school's blocking program you might want to visit here.. http://www.peacefire.org/ Great little place so that you can surf to the fullest... Bess did block for some reason at my school... I dont know why it just does some times..
  4. That would be sweet.. I have to find a copy of Battlefield first... Great game..
  5. That is true.... We will see what ATI comes up with on the 23rd... My guess is that it is going to be sweet.... If you have a 9800pro there isnt really anyreason to upgrade.. It is one of the best cards ever made to begin with.
  6. that would be cool.... How are you going to monitor who get bandwidth?? I know that I wouldnt want some person who is running a movie site on the same server as me..... Let me know I might be interested. Post some prelim specs to!
  7. OOO let me in on the brag fest.. ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 4309 Kbps about 4.3 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is: 526 KB/sec Auth Code: 2064636 (validate at http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 77 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 1.95 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?ta=&top=&align=&num=2064636&kbps=4309&gen=gen&a=9.71428571428571&b=1.71428571428571&c=1145.14285714286
  8. lol that is evil.... But it might work..
  9. ATI new card R880xt will be release on the 26th of April... It is going to be the first card to offer PCI Express and has many of the Nvidia's current specs. I guess we are just going to have to wait and see...
  10. It was kinda of what I got from the comcast people when I had mine installed... No suprise I was a little off their tech support isnt amazing...
  11. Hey welcome to the forum!! I am glad to hear that you like comcast. I am also on comcast.... ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 4205 Kbps about 4.2 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is: 513 KB/sec Auth Code: 2063076 (validate at http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 75 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?ta=&top=&align=&num=2063076&kbps=4205&gen=gen&a=9.14285714285714&b=1.71428571428571&c=1145.14285714286 Where are you located??
  12. When was the last time you did a spyware check, virus scan, and removed your temp files? Have you ever attempted to play with your rwin?
  13. At one time it was possble to get those speeds. Modem hacks...
  14. if you are getting over the advertized speed leave it alone.... Most likely you will not beable to get any faster due to the newer hardware. In the old days you could hack your modem and get these outragous speeds. But now with the new tech you cant do it. By the way it is illegal so dont try.
  15. If you are not getting over the advertized speed it could be a few things: 1) Your isp has really strict bandwidth limits. 2) the upgrade to the new speed isnt complete 3) To many people are on you node 4) You are on dsl(the replacing the phone jack thing you mentioned) If you are on DSL and it happens to be SDSL you are being fooled by the ISP. The current capable limits on that technology are, as I understand it, 3mbs. Which would explain why you are not seeing the 4 that you are talking about. The router shouldnt effect you speed greatly but a firewall could. Post 2 download tests and upload tests. This will helps us out!
  16. could be behind a firewall... If he is and that is the real speed, damn i want to be your friend.
  17. yeah the booster is something that the cable company will install on the cable line if the frequency is to low or to high. This happens when to many people are on one node and surfing at the same time. My guess would be that if you wait til an off peak hour say around 11:30 on like a tuesday you would see that the speed is there but you arent getting it because some many people are on while you are on normally.
  18. Hey all.... It has been a while but got some great news. Nvidia has just formally released the next generation of FX cards. The basic new about this new card is that it is between 25%-100% faster than the ATI 9800XT! This is accomplished by using 16 rendering pipelines instead of the ATI's 8. The stats are as follows.. The chip is the NV-40, the memory selections are going to be 128/256/512, clock speed is 400 MHZ, memory speed is 550 mhz, memory bandwidth is a mind blowing 35.2 GBs, and the base price at launch is going to be under $500. Which we all know what that means, $499.99. Tom's Hardware has a great article on this bad boy, but I will give you a quick sample of the results. In UT2004 with all the eye candy turned on you can expect over 64FPS compair that with the 9800XT, 38.2fps, Ladies and gentalmen we have a new leader in the graphics world??? I think so... O yeah by the way this card break 12,000 in 3DMark 2003 STOCK!!!
  19. you will not see anything faster because most of the modems are based on 10/100 ports. Which means that the card it self is limited to 10/100.
  20. You might need a line booster to up you speed back to the normal ranges.
  21. This is one of the downfalls to cable. As more people hop on the router you are on the slower your and their connection becomes. If you are really lucky and you ISP is monitoring usage stats they will most of the time upgrade that area so that it runs faster . Some times it just take them for ever.... Comcast is a great example. When I first joined I was 1.5mbs/256kbs. I my speeds were around 1800-2100 at first. Then I started to slow down I mean really slow down, 1350-1500. About a month later I received a email from ISP heaven, I was now rated at 3.0mbs/256!! It gets better. I was moved off of the really crowed router on to a new router. I get around 4450 now! So call your ISP ask why it is so slow and if they plan to upgrade anytime soon. By the way welcome to the site!
  22. that is really good....
