You might want to call your local Verizon office and ask what their deployment plan/schedule looks like.

I like the HP external drives (I still have one), but depending on your budget, you might look at the Sony drives. The Sony DRX-800UL will burn dual layer in both the +R and -R formats at higher speeds. Dual layer disks are still outrageously priced but eventually they'll be a great choice for large Ghost images, media collections, etc. I have a Sony DRX-710UL and an aging HP dvd300e. The Sony is my work horse now.

I had signal issues with my wireless system until I spent $80 on a couple of directional antennae. You won't know until you try.

I get 15-15.4 download and 1.5-1.8 upload out of any point on my wireless network. I would not be happy with the speed drop you are seeing. I also don't use the hardware you're using. I've never had the Dlink 624 because I already have a wireless network and there was no need to add another router. So at installation, I got the Dlink 604 router which has been in my drawer now for about 6 months. My wireless network is really a mesh bridge to the LAN side of my infrastructure. The access points I use are running in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint bridge mode. Point-to-point is used to control which access points are allowed to connect to other access points. This allows me to control the signal and coverage for my property. The multipoint stuff is for client connections. Someone else using the 624 is going to have to chime in on their performance. I don't recall if you ever said you've tested from more than one machine. If you have some friends with laptops that have the G wireless card, invite them over and run some tests. What machine make, model and wireless cards have you tested?

Yes, it's quite possible the PVR2000 drivers will work with your card. I have two tuner cards from Hauppauge. I have the WinTV PVR-250 and the WinTV PVR-250MCE. They both work in MCE 2005. Niether is listed in the Microsoft HCL.

So to clarify, you're saying the router you're using is the Dlink 624 wireless router that came with the FIOS package. When you are running test from it via one of the wired ports, you get the expected speeds. When you run wireless connected to it, your speed drops. Is that correct? The cause of the drop in speed is going to be on one end of the wireless link. My suggestion would be to test several wireless computers or laptops to see if you get a good speed result from another wireless card. If you do, then you know the router is ok. If you test from several wireless machines and therefore several wireless card chipsets, then I'd start pointing the finger at the router and have Verizon come replace it, or prove it works.

I'm betting your tuner card will not work in MCE 2005. It isn't logo'd or listed as supported in MCE at http://testedproducts.windowsmarketplace.com/results.aspx?&bCatID=751&cpID=1064&ocID=0&OR=1 and it doesn't appear to have any MCE drivers at http://www.leadtek.com.tw/eng/support/list_driver.asp Looks like the Leadtek MCE card is the Winfast PVR2000

Do you need to join a domain? If not, you'll never go back to winXP Pro. You can actually join a domain with Media Center 2005, but you'll break the Media Extender connections. You won't have any problems with any drivers you're running on WinXP. The biggest challenge with Media Center is the drivers, encoders, and decoders for some tuner cards and DVD play back.

Which router were you connected to (wired) when you did the 15/1.8 test?
-
Most likely due to the poor PPPoE implementation is the 624 you are trying. Again, put it back to the way it was and confirm it works as installed.
-
My suggestion is to put your connection back into the configuration that was installed. I assume that's the di-604 wired router. Verify the connection is 15/2. After you've verified the connection is working as installed, or per the service definition, then you can look at adding on to it. In your case, that probably means disabling the 624 dhcp server so that it is just a wireless access point. Daisy chain the 624 to the 604.

that download is hosed... i wonder why?

Actually, I wasn't correcting you, I was trying to correct myself. However, my correction was wrong and my original post stands. I should know better than to doubt myself. There was a reason 660 stuck in my head. See http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12647441 or http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,11357587~mode=flat

Is the 624 you are using, the one that came with FIOS? The retail store 624 is different than the Verizon supplied one.
-
Run some tests directly connected to the 624 (wired). If you are getting 15/2, you know the connection is fine. If you aren't getting 15/2 from the wireless, try to test several wireless computers. It may be a bad wireless card or seetings on it. It could also be a bad router. If you can't get things nailed down, call Verizon and ask for help. If the router is bad, they'll replace it. No worries.

Verizon can upgrade to GPON cards and other goodies that support much more data down the road. And we're only talking about part of the spectrum available from the lasers.
-
Repeats question: What router are you using? Are you using the Verizon supplied Dlink 624 or other?
-
Who are you talking to?
-
This doesn't look to be a tweak issue.
-
If FIOS is available at your address, go with it. That fiber strand is capable of supporting up to 660meg data speeds and thats just on the data spectrum. FIOS TV is coming soon so we'll know the channel line ups and pricing in about a month.

It isn't always apparent what the issue it when you see a slow download. I do know that they run a large cluster of servers and if I see a slow download, I just cancel it and retry. Usually that fixes the issue for me. It just gets another server and swoosh, here comes the bits.

Gotta learn to use te speel button...

The easiest way to test Vista without messing up your hard drive is to use VMWare or Virtual PC 2004.

You aren't getting that speed from a Cigular cell phone.
