  1. I have seen some postings that indicate there may be some regional marketing taking place and offering additional discounts off the national price.
  2. All Cablenut does it provide you a graphical easy to use interface into the Windows settings to change options, buffer sizes, etc. There is nothing wrong with doing that. The cablenut program is free, but they will gladly accept donations. See http://www.cablenut.com for more info.
  3. You're asking people to help you break the law. I don't think that's really appropriate here.
  4. What problem are you trying to solve?
  5. If you are booting from the WinXP CD, deleting the existing partition, creating a new one, then doing the long format and install and it fails, you might consider the drive is hosed. How old is the drive?

  7. Are you trying to install the OS or formatting from within WinXP?
  8. Low Level formatting writes a binary zero to each sector on each track of every track on each platter of a hard disk or other media.
  9. Since there aren't any good Xbox Live diagnostic tools, your best bet is to troubleshoot using a laptop or desktop machine. Confirm you are getting your advertised speeds running speed tests here. Run some tracert's to this location and others. Spread the tracert's across various sites so you get a good picture of performance and latency. I'm betting there's an issue with your connection but maybe not. Testing with a pc will give you some good data points to work from.
  10. One other thing, with the control tools, you can lock the connection to a particular access point (via MAC address). That is extremely useful when you are trying to pinpoint connection issues.
  11. You might try the cablenut tweaking program. My settings are at https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=6746.msg64612#msg64612 Don't expect a major improvement but you might get another 200-300k out of your upload.
  12. Mcafeeble strikes again.
  13. Go to http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm and get the latest 2200BG driver and software set. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/detail_desc.aspx?ProductID=1637&DwnldID=9003&agr=N is the direct link. When you install it, don't install the Single signon option since it will remove the fast user switching. I'm running this on our Dell Inspiron 6000 with winXP Pro. You can install the driver only or some of the extra software. The admin tools are pretty kewl. You can see signal strength, which access point you are connecting to, etc. You can also setup exclusions so that you aren't connecting to a neighbors network. If you install the admins tools and software, they run a bunch of other tasks so it'll look like you got invaded by a virus or adware. I don't like that much, but I really like the admin tool so I deal with it. I'm running it on my HP laptop right now.
  14. See Kingston's comments on this machine at http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=24423&mfr=Gateway&model=8510GZ+Notebook&Sys=24423-Gateway-8510GZ+Notebook&distributor=0&submit1=Search When you see the slow down, are you using battery or plugged into the wall?
  15. To the best of my knowledge, Cingulars EDGE network does not go up to 1.5meg speeds.
  16. What ports are you trying to forward? The ISPs usually only block 21 and 80. Does the server have a static ip and is that ip the one you are using?
  17. If you are using windows XP, you can go to Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager button and it'll bring up a display of all the devices. Find the DVD drive and post the make and model.

  19. FYI, in case anyone else is interested, my final test today worked out nicely. I did a LiveMeeting meeting where I was the presenter, did desktop sharing, etc. Everything work out well so I'm moving full steam ahead porting my old number. And I took the security discussion offline. I'm too paranoid to discuss my stuff in a public forum. Sorry.
  20. I'm not using a consumer grade router.
