FYI, I switched back to the residential plan. It was the only way to get FIOS TV. When I was on the business plan, I had the main feed come into a switch. On that switch, I could put my Xbox360, FTP server, streaming media server and firewall. Everything behind the firewall is on the GigE backbone at my house. In short, only one of the ip addresses was NAT'd. Cheers, Halobox

FYI, I saw a similar issue with my SIIG RAID ExpressCard. See http://www.siig.com/product.asp?catid=128&pid=1037 for the card I have. I was trying to use an external Adaptec eSATA case. It didn't work. So I am now using the Vantec NexStar 3. See http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145167 for the case I'm using on a temp basis. It works great, but I am looking for a better case with better cooling. My external drive is just for backups and repository stuff so I don't run it 24x7. Send me a note later and let me know how your enclosure works out. I will probably end up getting something similar to yours with multiple drives.

The process depends on the version of Ghost, but the answer is yes. Ghost 9 and Ghost 10 are Windows versions of the product. You would install Ghost 9 or 10 and do a backup. You can backup multiple drives or a single drive. Ghost is also very flexible on restores, partition sizing, etc. At restore time, you would use the Ghost 9 or 10 CD and boot from it. You can restore easily to the targets it can see. Assuming you are doing hardware based striping or mirrors, you shouldn't have an issue although you should take the time to read through the Symantec docs and kb's on the subject. Ghost 2003 also comes with Ghost 9 or 10. It is DOS based and easily automated via scripting. You can shut your machine down and boot from the Ghost 2003 for backups or restores. All versions of the products support external hard drives via IEEE 1394 (FireWire) or USB. I'd recommend USB 2.0. I don't believe the have support for eSATA drives yet. If you have a working PC you don't care about, I'd recommend screwing around with it to get familiar with the process.

Yea, it's available for my house but I haven't ordered it yet. I need to call their technical support and chat with them about my static plan. Apparently they are clueless about routing and ip addressing. Supposedly the FIOS TV service only works with the dynamic residential plans. I seriously doubt that, but I need to talk with someone that knows what they are talking about.

You can use any username and any pasword. It's been that way for months and months. Supposedly they are getting ready to convert from PPPoE to DHCP.

What speeds are you getting with the D-Link that comes with your service?

The technical design and implementation has been discussed at some other sites in full detail. The FIOS TV implementation is very similar to a standard cable TV design except instead of just backboning with fiber, they take it all the way to your house.

Verizon is only using IPTV for the on demand stuff. All of the regular programming comes across the fiber to the ONT, is converted and sent across the coax in your house.

FYI, Verizon plans to start taking FIOS TV orders in less than a week. December 1st was the original target date but after I spoke with them today, it has been pushed a week. So, for those of you already on FIOS Internet, you'll have something else to consider soon. The channel lineup and pricing looks good, but I see a problem with their HD DVR offering. They are currently using Motorola 6400 Series HD DVR's that have 160gig hard drives. You can fill 160gig fast so they have a capacity issue that needs to be addressed. An easy solution would be to enable the firewire port on the DVR and allow external hard drive enclosures. Some of the cable providers permit this, although many do not. I've been running the static 15/2 plan for months. It isn't offered in all regions. It is available in North Texas.

They aren't required to go through the attic, but I guess some installers will. They did for me but it was late winter last year and wasn't hot. In the summer in Texas you can forget getting them up there. They went across my attic and out the overhang to the outside, down the outside wall, then through a hole into the room I wanted it at.

EVDO isn't currently deployed in very many cities and it is no where near the speeds of 802.11b much less 802.11g.

I use my PSP as a portable media player. I have started converting my DVD collection to the mpeg4 format it uses. It works great and comes in VERY handy when I travel.

Looks like it's working and we've added another spoiled user to our collection.
