  1. So what is the future of computing? 32 bit or 64 bit ? And which should I build in to my next machine? Going to build one from parts this time, instead of a manufacturers model. Hopefully this XP box lasts till Windows 7 comes out. Still trying Linux on a old machine though. No Vista for me.
  2. About a couple of months ago there was a update for some Vista dictionary definitions. About 56 MB size. Just to add a few words. Friendster, Klum, Nazr, Obama, and Racicot http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2008/07/09/why-do-five-dictionary-words-require-a-60mb-windows-update Replacing the whole file is one thing to avoid corruption or errors, but can you imagine someone on dialup or on restricted bandwidth plans? I didn't download it for Vista basic and it disappeared a couple of months later from the update list. And the Vista Basic box takes about 5 minutes to download and install updates. And a reboot to top it off. And the hard drive still churning for a couple of minutes after reboot and account is loaded. But the updates, over time, are slowly increasing the stability of the system.
  3. For Windoze updates, I go to the site and press custom, so I can see what Microsoft is trying to give me. And pick and choose whats really needed. And I also wait about a week after patch Tuesday, so I don't get a dreaded crappy patch that will be tweaked 4 days later. My XP box Takes ten seconds to find the available updates. My Kids Vista Basic box take about two minutes to find updates.
  4. Have you tried OpenDNS DNS servers? http://www.opendns.com 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 You probably are being filtered at the ISP level so the alternate DNS servers may not help. Hopefully not by the Australians and their 'Test' filtering of the Internet for the glorious waste of hundreds of millions of dollars and braincells. Learn what Proxy surfing is.... http://freeproxyserver.ca/ is one to test if you can get out to the site..... In your Tracert ..... "Reports destination host unreachable." Online Gambling is only illegal to the home States that want all the gambling money for themselves.. But thats Kentucky and the almost theft of domain names for all that cash... If the Judge can keep the theft from happening... And I guess the game show network online site is exempt,, as opposed to out of country sites. Double standard. Cash stays at home, no block. Cash goes somewhere else in the world, block it and burn it with fire..
  5. Where your LAN connection is in the bottom right of the task bar(Two little computers in blue), Is there a yellow triangle with exclamation mark instead of the two computer symbol? Or do you have a software firewall that is blocking your connection silently. Or maybe the firewall has the 'block all traffic' lock icon in the taskbar..
  6. Are you connecting via 'wireless' to the router or via 'wire' to the router? Wireless, your router may be set to not allow access without security pass phrase entered in to your computer. Wire, your Ethernet wire may be part unplugged or just a bad wire.
  7. I think I knows what he's talking about.. Get free Internet with some modifications of your various bits. Otherwise the disconnected system just goes to the ISP's holding page saying "You are not authorized to use this network". :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:
  8. Nice thing about Obama is he is revealing all sorts of back door dealings.. And keeps mentioning whats happening in Secret dealings with Canada. People need to notice that what the Copyright Mafia does is illegal. If no evidence to monitor you connection? A crime. If no evidence to get a warrant to monitor your connection? A crime. If no evidence to be able to create a 100% court case and instead demanding thousands of dollars in a "voluntary" penalty? A crime... The CopyRight Mafia just acts like a thug and payoffs keep the Government from busting down their doors for Racketeering... But Canadians are just too damn nice and complacent and allow our Government to do and create things that are illegal. So lets raspberry cheer for the Sweater Vest party and the next election in January. and March. and June.. And what a freaking joke the government is here..... Heres the link from the Electronic Frontier Foundation...And a part exert... http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/12/mpaa-obama "MPAA has identified the following countries for priority trade policy attention in 2009: Canada, China, India, Mexico, Russia and Spain. Translation: Not satisfied with wrecking the internet for US citizens alone, the MPAA would like the US government to pressure foreign governments to adopt the same harmful measures. This is made explicit by a look at, for instance, the International Intellectual Property Association's 2008 one-sheets on Canada [PDF] and Spain [PDF]: The MPAA wants these governments to institute mandatory internet filtering and three-strikes laws. Canada is being singled out by the MPAA because of its sensible rejection of the Canadian version of the US's deeply flawed Digital Millenium Copyright Act.
  9. So same speed with both tests. Any chance you DSL provider has a failed bit of equipment or somehow the system has locked you down at the slow speed? Or has the speed been dropping over time? I don't know if your DSL/router would have a speed setting, other than for wireless. EDIT: http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/kb_vigor_throttle.html http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/vfaq.html

  11. It all depends on who is monitoring the downloads/source(if at all)... And who set up the virus to cause the download....As long as the files did not come from a Government HoneyPot.. It could just be a really bad joke to screw with people. A form of RickRolling for the Filesharers. But there was this old Grandma who had a wireless Internet connection in her small apartment(grandkid could of put a wired connection). Feds came knocking on the door one day and were easily convinced she was not the Downloader. But there were many units in the building that could of done the downloading via her wireless connection, without getting caught.
  12. Do you have a Phone box on the outside(or inside)of the house that has a phone plug on a hinge(like the pics in this link.. http://www.dslnuts.com/DSLwiring3.shtml ) Or if you have the older Bell demarcation point.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demarcation_point ..and the hot side is the right. To be able to hot wire in a new phone outlet right there. Disconnect the other house side phone lines. Careful.. Old phone lines like to break. And remember what side they were on.. Unplug this main phone line and plug in your access point(DSL modem/router) to it and then connect to the computer. You might need an extension or wireless... Now phone in(you won't have any phones ringing, since they are unplugged). Do you get disconnected? If not disconnected, then flawed wiring in the house... So now you put the computer back on it's line and then connect lines one by one while phoning in to test each one,,, until problem resumes. Or maybe the DSL modem is flawed? Can you borrow another one? Did the AT&T guy just test the street side? Or get a new Ethernet port card. They are cheap enough. Mother board ones can fail....

Since I do not see it on the official FireFox add-ons pages. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox System requirements * Windows 2000 (SP4) / XP (SP1) / Vista, Linux and Mac OS X * FireFox 1.5 and above 1.5 ,Which doesn't always mean FireFox 3 . 17. What are you trying to download with Xplornet? They will screw you around a bit. Just like most North American satellite Internet providers do. And the provider will blame you for slow system speeds, according to the end user agreement that does violate consumer protection laws. Satellite does not like file sharing applications and will throttle them to barely any speed. Regular downloads should work. But you can be FAPped if they are any larger than 12 MB in size. No FAP between about midnight and 5am, for the large downloads. FAP(fair access policy). Uploads on satellite are around about 100Kbps. It is what is needed to request the download of web pages and keep you from uploading huge quantity's of data. 'Steal speed from the uploads to allow for more download bandwidth'. Any other questions?
  18. Heres a recent one from Canada. Simple looking. Even some correct access numbers/website. Except for one phone number, that if called will get you on many lists apparently.. Heres the Snopes writeup to this type of scam.. http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp http://www.news1130.com/news/local/article.jsp?content=20081118_163044_20096 Telus warns of email/cellphone scam Tuesday, November 18 - 01:30:44 PM Shane Bigham VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Don't call that number! Telus is warning customers about a scam that might be in your email in-box right now. Shawn Hall with Telus says the email is fraudulent, and dangerous. Hall says they started receiving calls from customers around 9 this morning, "Concerned about an email they were getting claiming that Telus was going to start releasing cellphone numbers to telemarketers. The email is a fraud. We are not releasing cellphone numbers." There are two numbers on the email. Hall says one of them is the actual number for the do-not-call registry. But the other one (888-382-1222) has been linked to telemarkting scams. He says the person who answers that call will try to extract personal information that can be used to commit fraud against you. This is what the fraudulant email looks like, and Telus reminds you it is a SCAM: "Cell Phone Numbers Go Public this month. REMINDER .... All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing Companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 1 866-580-3625 or 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone Number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number. Or you can do it online at www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS.. It takes about 20 seconds" (end of scam email) Oh and it's Quebec that likes to send out lottery scams to the States. Seems they do not have to abide by the same laws the rest of us do.. Theres a Telemarketer from Florida who 'computer' fakes a Quebec phone number of 514-958-0000 .
  19. The biggest thing with routers is to change the 'default password'. And the 'default name' of the unit as well,,even though he knows (if true) which router you are using anyways... Lock down to using the MAC address of each computer to access the router,, even though it can be forged.. And the big one is too watch your traffic lights on the modem/router. If they are constantly blinking(not a short blip) when your systems are on standby or off, then someone has access...... And turn down your Wireless strength. Don't need to broadcast way past your 4 walls. Some people have fun and kill the router when they see about 3 minutes of heavy 'download' traffic and then listen for the neighbors to scream at a canceled download..
  20. have you tried to use port 587 instead of port 25... http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1838667,00.asp http://www.oit.ucsb.edu/CHSI.asp
  21. You need full voltage to the UPS to recharge it. Otherwise with low voltage going in to it,, The UPS will be running on part transformer power(It will buzz).. So the UPS will keep the computer from restarting, but life expectancy or battery backup time of the UPS? Who knows.. Lived in places with occasional brownouts or half second voltage pauses, when hydro line circuits were switched. Even a 3 to 5 volt AC drop kicks in my UPS.
  22. Actually your numbers are as high as you can get. Or even slightly higher(495Kbps is somewhat perfect, accounting for overhead of the 512Kbps package). Your speed is 507 Kilo bits per second The next number is 62 kilo Bytes per second. (So times 8 for your speed). Heres a quick and dirty answer for KiloBytes and Kilobits definitions/conversions. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080925023548AAFUkcr But check that your fabulous speeds carry on past your first 30 days.. I see you did the test overnight..So test during between 5pm to 10pm to see what PrimeTime speeds are for you. Also use the larger tests to achieve better accuracy than the basic size speed test. Don't forget about the 30 day rolling FAP either.
  23. With Xplornet(Telesat provides the service). The Anik F2 is full or almost full on some of the beams. The Anik F3 has two spot beams and is using them already). Hughesnet Spaceway3(Ka band) is providing some new capacity in the southern reaches of Canada(but is still being tweaked to work reliably for residential users). Hughesnet KU band satellites are mostly full. Nimiq4, which is for Bell satellite TV, may be running by early next year without major delays(has 8 KA band spot beams on it for Telesat, for use in Canada). http://www.netkaster.com/ As the northern re-seller of Telesats satellite Internet. And Telesats Fair Access Policy(FAP), is on all re-sellers. The below is from NetKaster. And you won't see Xplornet's version any where near this.... Benefits and Privileges. This Acceptable Use and Fair Access Policy (the
  24. Have you tried Quercetin ? http://www.naturalfactors.com It's a Bio-flavonoid Complex. Available in the health food stores. You start taking it about two weeks before hay fever season and , for me, it knocks down my symptoms immensely. This year I have only had a couple of a 2 second sniffle and then back to nothing. It is a maintenance dose and not a pop a pill and get relief. Start taking now if your pollen season is longer than most.. I have taken large does of regular Hay fever medications. About 3 times the normal peoples dose. Some I can't take because they raise my blood pressure. Benadryl is about the only one that works for me. And after a couple of weeks of high dose, I by-pass any side effect. High dose is about 6 to 8 pills a day. And my liver and kidneys still respect me.
