  1. Microsoft has never said the actually cost of vista, But I remember reading, and one of there reps. said it had cost well over a billion dollars to make. Perinstalled versions of windows don't cost a whole lot, so they don't really make any money there. Even from retail sales they don't really make any money. They only really make the money from enterprise sales. i'm sure they have made money off vista by now, but at what cost? There reputation is nothing now, and everyone knows they can't innovate even tho they say they do.
  2. Mobile Speedtest: So with the new iPhone coming out likely on Monday, I thought it was time to revamp the mobile speedtest, and well since http://testmymobile.net/ doesn't work it was probably a good thing I don't have it under a domain yet, but you can use the ipaddress I posted above to get too it, and use it. Its runs pretty damn good, and look amazing on the iphone. Ive built in several things that you are use too here to make it the best mobile speed test. When you run a test, if it does not last long enough, it will forward you onto a bigger test so you can get a more accurate test. There is in site stat tracking. You can see global test stats, as well as your user stats when you register to track your stats. You can view the results of your last 100 speedtests, as well the last 100 global results. If you register now, when its on its own domain name your username will still work. It was designed specifically for the iPhone, but will work for just about any phone, that can get on the internet. Test the hell out of it, and give me your best shot.... Here are some screen shots on how it looks in the iphone...
  3. Don't keep your self locked into just Microsoft/Windows Programing languages. Its good and all, but when it comes to finding a job it can be hard if thats all you know since everyone is expanding multi-platform. I would go straight for PHP. Since its the most used programing language right now, if you know it in and out you will be able to get a job with no problem. Just about every big website uses PHP. Know that, javascript, and know MySQL and you should be good. Also Objective-C is something that would be good to take a quick look at.
  4. I had that same problem with my windows notebook. And could never figure it out.
  5. No windows vista does not need DX10 too run its best. DX10 is only there for games. Not one part of the vista UI will take any advantage of DX10, its 1000% DX9.
  6. Even with current hardware its slow. And have you ever read the vista requirements? Because it doesn't need DX10 like you say, Aero is DX9. It shouldn't even need that. Some linux distros pull off the same and better effects but can do it on 1/3 the power.
  7. Memory has been extremely cheap for the past 3 years, that doesn't mean that the OS should need 4GB to run right. 1GB works, and 2GB works, but it still runs like shit. even with 4GB it doesn't really run the way it should. 8GB of ram is a good spot. Why, because the OS is massive, and they put some stupid half assed "let's just cache everything in ram" in, they didn't think it through. The UI is over done, and not optimized correctly So again it performs like shit with your average graphics card, unless you go for 4GB of ram. The OS is over done, the code is not optimized correctly, and MS didn't think it through. There is no reason why you should even need 2GB to make it work well. It should be fine with 1GB of ram, because that is what the average notebook comes with. But its not. And when for the first year of vista, you could only have 2GB of ram in your average notebook, so you couldn't even get it to perform the way it should. Microsoft Fucked up, and they know it. Its a overpriced, fucked up OS, that kills your battery life on your notebook, needs a crap ton of ram too run right, doesn't play games very well, nvidia can't seem to get good drivers for it, it has the most fucked up security policies every, oh and your printer probably wont work with it. Its the worst modern OS you can get hands down. Microsoft knows its a total flop, business aren't moving too it, and if it wasn't they wouldn't be pushing windows 7 so hard so early.
  8. tikitom windows vista is a flop, everyone knows it, even MS does. Steve ballmer has even gone on to stay vista a "work in progress" And they are pushing up windows 7 because vista is really bad, and they know it. You have to have 4GB of ram for the damn thing to perform decently, and that is just wrong. It took them 5 years to come out with the second worst OS ever. Vista may have "good" sales numbers but what MS won't tell you is how many people actually reverted back to XP.
  9. Well generally intermediate releases do pretty well. at least win98 did well. But with XP there wasn't a intermediate release, vista was a big one, so we really don't know if that will work again.
  10. I added a poll to this... And Yes I think windows 7 will be a flop like vista. Why because either way you cut it, it will still be windows vista. All thats going to happen is, MS will add some of the stuff that was suppose to be in vista to windows 7, and they will take the stuff apple added to leopard, and whatever they do with 10.6. But it will still be vista. Which if you ask me is really stupid, they are going to be changing the kernel some but not much. MS did come up with this great new core for windows called minwin, which is quite amazing its only about 25mb and has all the features of the full OS kernel, but they are not going to use it this time around, because oh developers wont be happy.
  11. Yea but isn't it going to just put it back once you update SMF next time?
  12. HAHA looks like damon removed the line of code he wasn't suppose to.
  13. It isn't a powerpc version is it? If not I know why it does it. Some build's had things that where specific for a specific machine, or group of machines. I have a link to the fix somewhere, ill see if I can find it.
  14. Thats never going to happen again. They tried it once, and as soon as steve came back he put a stop too that right away. Opening it up creates a whole mess of problems. Few remember that Mac OS 9, 8, and 7, where really bad because 7 was open and 8, an 9 where based on 7, they all had the same problems that windows has today with viruses, spyware and all the other crap. Keeping it closed has helped keep it secure & super stable. Since the number of hardware combos is so limited they can develop for those specific peaces of hardware, and thats why everything is so seamless. If apple did for some reason open it up, they would gain massive market share over night because dell would drop windows right away. How come you can't downgrade to tiger?
  15. Why is it that windows users get all "oh macs suck" "you can't do anything on a mac" "they are too expensive" "pc's can do more" "you can't game on a mac" "oh they only have one mouse button" and on and on and on. when ever we try and say anything good about them? The sad thing is PC users can hardly ever bring up a valid argument. Here is one of my arguments as too why PC's suck. Installing and removing software is a pain in the ass. And I use a windows box on a daily basis.
  16. That wouldn't be quite GeForce 7600, but its close. A 7600 would be a little bit faster.
  17. Don't even dare bring up that 1 mouse button argument. That is the worst point that everyone brings up. I'm so sick of hearing that, Is it the only thing a dedicated windows user can come up with? All mac desktops have a 2 button mouse. And when you right click on the desktop it does the same thing it does on a linux OS, or windows, it has forever. Notebooks are a little different, they may only have 1 physical button, but what everyone fails to realize is that the trackpad is multitouch. So to right click, all you do is tap the pad with 2 fingers and does a right click. Its better then having 2 physical buttons. Go here to see all the multitouch features of the trackpad http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/features.html
  18. Yea. Windows looses market share every day. More so in the consumer market then the enterprise. Apple hasn't gotten through that wall yet.
  19. I think he ment a shrinking windows world
  20. You actually bought a Apple IIe damn thats going way back, before the GUI. They are very different now from those days. Well hell everything is...
  21. Right now there a 2 programs I couldn't live with out. First is Photoshop. I use it on a daily basis, and would die with out it, There is nothing close too it in terms of well everything. Yea its expensive but its worth every penny. The other is TextMate. As someone who looks at a ton of code this is a must for me. Yea a plain text editor works but its not the same. TextMate color codes everything, makes it really easy to find things, and will even tell you when you have a problem with the code. Just another program making my life easier.
  22. Thats what crossover and bootcamp are for. Just boot into windows to play the game, boot back out when done. With crossover you can play many games with out even leaving OS X. More developers are starting to get on board with making games for macs, now that they are intel they can use a program called cider which makes them mac compatible.
  23. Thats one thing I always forget to mention. There people go above and beyond every time. If you need help with something they will help you. Thats why there support is rated #1. You can actually under stand the people when you call. If you have a apple store near by you can take there to the genius bar free of charge and they will take care of the issue right there for you. If the parts are in stock they will even do hardware repairs there for you. And they are not geek squad, they will do top quality work.
  24. Right now I'm using parallels running windows XP, There really aren't any performance drawl backs because it uses virtualization not emulation so it can take full advantage of your processor. Where this of VM ware fusion lack in performance is on gaming, There really isn't a way to emulate a 3D card but they are getting better. If you want to play windows games you could use either bootcamp, crossover and it will give you full performance of the graphics card.
  25. Its probably your motherboard if anything. I would start pulling off parts and see. could be ram if you left the ram in when you where doing that.
