Judging from your reply #3, looks like you need cablenut to increase your RWIN to at least 128480. You can do this manually by putting that number into the DefaultReceiveWindow field in the adjuster window. You may want to decrease your MTU, as it may be set too high, depending on your connection. What is the nature of your connection (DSL, Cable?). And where are you located? Have you tried testing from different mirrors: http://www.testmy.net/tools/mirrors.php Furthermore, your traceroute doesn't look great. What is the topology of your home network (what hardware do you have connected)? Can you please powercycle and post another traceroute for comparison?

Did you wanna post a traceroute? -
The modify post feature has been given a time limit. 20 mins or so (could somebody clarify that specifically?). Once the time has expired, you will not be able to edit your post.

Altoidz, you can look into getting the most updated drivers for your card from Creative's site: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

That would be the way to go....drowning in a barrel of rum.... -
DJ_AMAT , there are no guarantees, but if you are interested in trying a couple things, you might look into using cablenut to change a couple settings. MTU can go to 1480, Default receive window (RWIN) to 129904. You might notice a difference from these settings. I would be sure to back up your registry before tweaking. But just so you know, cablenut tweaks are reversible. Here's your tweak guide: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097 And cablenut: http://www.testmy.net/topic-1013 And be sure to try testing from a few mirrors: http://www.testmy.net/tools/mirrors.php

I've always been under the influence that the goal of life is not how long you can make it last, but what you do with the time you have been given.

im back and my speeds are as bad as ever
FallowEarth replied to HelpThisHobo's topic in Make it Faster...
Yes, the issue is between your router and modem. Power down all of these devices for at least 10 mins, then bring them up in this order: modem first, then router, then PC's. Post another traceroute after this is completed. If you have already done this, then can you please connect your PC directly to your modem, and post another traceroute. -
AOL customers are mostly moving to other ISP's within the Time Warner corp., ie. Road Runner, Earthlink. I believe that one day AOL will eventually (hopefully!!!) be phased out completely. Although AOL provides internet access to the average Joe workin peeps, I think that it's software has caused more headache within the company than it has been worth. Plus, it is harder to convert an AOL user to a non-AOL user, than it is to start them off with the Microsoft browser and email client in the first place. In a future where the Internet is such a dominant means of ....well, pretty much everything....using AOL software, although easy to pick up and navigate, is in the long run detrimental to your learning the ropes you'll need to get by, much less get ahead.

If you want a second anti-malware scanning program, I'd suggest Ewido (www.ewido.net). It is compatible running with most other antivirus software. Check it out: http://www.ewido.net/en/compatibility/

In TCP/IP settings, are you obtaining the IP address automatically, or specifying it? Are you able to ping? From cmd: ping www.google.com ping 64.233.161.104 if not, try: tracert 64.233.161.104 -
:haha: funny shit

I believe the correct term for these is "losers" :evil6:

There is a way to configure the boot.ini file to specify that it does a safeboot each time....trouble with that is if your computer is unable to get into safe mode that way, you're probably euchred. Have you tried a system restore? How bout a defrag? Have you tried the recovery console from the XP cd? Just a few things you might have a go at before a format....
-
Deven, how are you attempting to access safe mode? Maybe we can help you find another way. Then you'll be able to run some scans, or clean your registry from there, if a format is something that you'd rather not do.

Massey, I see where you are coming from. The majority of what we do on this site is help others, and our members range from IT to first time computer users, so it is a very dynamic community when it comes to things technical. You bring up a very good point in that it is important to speak clearly, when you are providing help, and in terms that the member seeking help will benefit from. There is the matter of feeling out their ability, and understanding their issue properly, before you can accurately address their concern. It is important to remember that some people are not as well-accustomed to the computer, or to certain components of computing, as you may be. But I don't think that there is a single person here who has not been the one asking for help on at one time or another, meaning that you were the less savvy one. Myself included. I think what massey is saying is not to get a big head. And its true, nobody wants to get help from somebody who is all attitude. Some things we can do to prevent confusion when helping: ~refer to an article, guide, or online resource that accurately explains the issue ~refer to a topic in the forum where the same/similar issue has been discussed ~relate a first-hand experience that relates to the issue ("this worked for me...") ~inform the customer to ask if the have any questions, and do you best to ensure that they are comfortable in doing so!

Hey victord66, Sounds like you have a lot of tweak programs operating. Sometimes, they can conflict with each other. I would suggest clearing and saving the values of all other apps but cablenut (ie. use only cablenut!). Try the file I have zipped below. When you open it in cablenut, set the DefaultReceiveWindow to 383328. Save to registry, reboot, retest. Another factor might be that you are running programs or processes which are interfering with your connection. Things like firewalls, browser toolbars/extensions, p2p or torrent clients, even IM's can cause your speedtest results to be lower. Often, booting into safe mode with networking and then testing is a good way to see if this is the case.

Yeah you're correct in what you posted. I just thought I'd make sure he can see 'em first. Sounded like he wasn't able to.

Looks like this test went ok: TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.3.3d click START to begin Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 518.58Kb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 4.06Mb/s Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem I bet it is something integrated with your browser. If you are running IE, try disabling your toolbars. Click View --> Toolbars. In here, all you need is Address Bar, Standard Buttons and Links. Click to uncheck (disable) any others. If you are running FF, click Tools --> Extensions. Here you should be able to right click and disable the extensions. You'll have to reopen the browser after. Then retest (use the one without a loader bar): http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php?ni=1&tt=1&s=2992&st=st&ta=&top=&nobar=1 <hr> If this doesn't work, try this online malware scan: http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan <hr> An alternative you have is to try the ftp download test laid out here: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-12193

That's exactly right. And the same applies to cable modems: if the modem is grounded properly, then it likely wouldn't be flapping, having insertion failures, or making constant power adjustments. It would remain online and function normally, as it is designed to do. A modem which is not grounded properly may cause a buildup of static electricity which will cause it to function irratically or improperly. If you have to power cycle your modem constantly, this is a possible reason as to why.

Most locations have recently increased RR lite download speed to 768 Kbps, up from 256 Kbps. Bit of an improvement anyway. DjVaGGo makes a point about the 7168 Kbps / 512 Kbps RR basic package. As far as I know, this is only available in the Tampa Bay area. They also have 10/1 and 15/2 packages.

Internet speeds serious problem, help needed
FallowEarth replied to One_Last_Breath's topic in Make it Faster...
Speeds not looking too poor. What are your current cablenut settings? Did you try the file I attached above? You can take a look through Vanburen's recent cablenut collections: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-1013 ...try a few and see what works best for you. Just remember to restart after applying changes to the registry.
