  1. HaXoR the PLANET! But seriously, what is the world coming to when infecting people's computers with malicious software is made as easy as online banking?
  2. Hey, khetting. Please start with The Bible.
  3. http://www.zug.com/pranks/powerbook/ <hr> This is good for a laugh.
  4. I don't usually take offense to ppl dissing the country I live in, but I do resent the fact that you feel you have to divert criticism directed at you and your country. You seem to have a habit of committing fallacies. <hr> What happened on 9/11 was terrible. Will the truth ever be revealed? Not likely. Was the attack provoked? Probably. Will we ever discover the truth about that? Not likely. I find it a pointless, tiresome, and circular debate. There is not enough evidence for either side where everyone will stop and say "Oh." It's just another blemish scarring the history of a nation. Every one has them. I would just like to say that it is the ppl, not the leader, who drive a country. If you don't agree with the leadership? Great, don't support it. You don't have to personally throw out the government, but don't be afraid to uphold your position when asked, by anyone. You don't have to go on a crusade to change the world either. Simply lead by example. Someone is always watching.
  5. There are ways to determine if it is software which is slowing you down. One way is to boot into safe mode with networking and run a speedtest. Also, try the one "load with no loader bar" as well. Another thing you can try is the FTP test laid out here (try at least 3 tests): http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-12193
  6. Are you bridging your NICs? Is the traceroute shown above performed on the PC acting as the gateway? If so, you may need to replace a cable or NIC, or perhaps specify the duplex. Duplexing indicates the media type communication of the NIC. Most NIC's are full-duplex capable, which means that they can communicate on the upstream and downstream simultaneously. However, most cable modems communicate at half-duplex, meaning they can only communicate on the downstream or upstream at a time, not both simultaneously. Most cable modems also communicate at the speed of 10 Mbps (10base). So if you are connecting your PC directly to the cable modem, try setting the duplex mode to 10base/half-duplex. You can access these settings by going to the advanced tab of the properties of your NIC (from device manager). Also, you should know that a router would enable you to connect all of your PCs to the Internet, without requiring a switch or NIC bridging/ICS. You may want to look into that. Often, your ISP will lease you a router, like they lease your cable modem to you. This usually means that they will also support any technical issues with the router.
  7. Hey embillma. A lot of ppl are able to exceed their caps. I can exceed my cap of 5 Mbps, occassionally getting download speeds of up to 6 Mbps. Basically, ISP's advertise speed packages, but it is usually a bit lower than the actual cap on your modem. There is room for play. If you have an optimized PC, a good hardware configuration, and a good route to the server, it is not uncommon to see 110-115% of your advertised download speed. Looks like you're doing well.
  8. Your RWIN is set high....and that traceroute is definitely not great. Looks like hardware to me. Got a router that you can bypass, and then run another traceroute?
  9. Regarding the traceroute: I'm assuming the first hop (with IP omitted), is your router. The times on 1st 2 are actually too high, which usually indicates a hardware issue. Are you using a wireless connection to the router? Have you tried bypassing the router? Trying different cables? Specifying NIC duplex?
  10. I notice that too on my laptop (P 733 Cel) What speeds do you get without the loader bar?
  11. Welcome, Protonium! Often, some software that is running on your PC can reduce your test results considerably. Try either cleaning up your startup items (start>>run>>msconfig>>startup tab), or shutting down running processes from the task manager. Firewalls and real-time antivirus protection most commonly do this. Toolbars or browser extensions can do this too. Where are you located? You can try testing from a mirror closer to you if need be: http://www.testmy.net/mirrors.php After you have tried VanBuren's steps above, try another speedtest, and if it is still slow, post a traceroute to testmy.net (start>>run>>cmd>>tracert testmy.net). Cable is a shared connection, but usually you can notice if it is a network issue from latency in the trace.
  12. If you used add/remove programs to get rid of Norton, a lot of the time that does not work. What version and year of Nortons did you have? Was it a standalone Antivirus install, or part of a suite like Norton Internet Security or System Works? You can get an uninstaller which cleans the reg keys from symantec.com. If you answer the above question, I can help you find it.
  13. Can you provide a traceroute to testmy.net? -start, run, type cmd and click ok -type tracert testmy.net and hit enter -post your results
  14. Knoppix? Yep, nice live distro. Got a CD kicking around somewheres.....
  15. That's still crap. Run this test and try an alternate form of speed test: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-12193. Also, provide a traceroute (from the command prompt: tracert www.testmy.net). I would think it is something software based slowing you down. Try this scan: www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan What browser are you using? Got toolbars/extensions? You using a router? Tried shutting down firewall and antivirus or whatever else when running a speedtest?
  16. Since it may be a software conflict on your PC, try the alternate speedtest as laid out here: http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=12193.0

I test from the BAF server in NYC because it has low traffic and an optimized route for me, although it is still a considerable distance away. The above are consecutive tests, with identical software configuration on my PC. I have always found IE to yield better speeds, at a more consistant rate. I have used the Fasterfox extenstion before (among others....most of which were terrible or stupid, which contributed to why I have stopped using FF), and it doesn't seem to do much for me. I have said this before, but I'll say it again. I prefer IE because I can troubleshoot 99.9% of issues with it. It is a very stable program, with total support coverage, and constant feed of updates/patches. FF does not profess to be a stable/good browser as much as it professes to be an IE killer. IMO, any product which exists simply to provide competition for its predecessor, will never be as good as its predecessor. Cool, it is open-source...but that doesn't mean you have a panel of geniouses engineering your product. BTW, Fasterfox operates by caching web-based data. So in theory, it should not affect your download speed at all.
  18. Blunted 2, is XP even stable on that thing?
  19. Hello and welcome! Have you read the sticky? http://mail.testmy.net/forum/t-2097 Try all the steps and let us know if you need clarification.
  20. Try this online scan: www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan Also, what browser are you using? Try disabling any toolbars or extensions when you test, as they can affect the results. Also, try disabling your firewall, any real-time protection, and any unnecessary processes while testing. Are you using a router? Can you provide a traceroute to testmy.net?
  21. I could be wrong, but it looks to me like there is latency between your router and your modem (modems usually have an IP address in the format of 10.x.x.x). Have you tried connecting your PC directly to your modem and running a traceroute and download speedtest? Also, what are your advertised speeds?
  22. What extensions are you running on FF? What toolbars do you have installed in IE?
  23. Thought I would update. I was able to resolve my IRQ sharing issue. Thank you for your help Peepnklown. I was able to do this by disabling ACPI, configuring the BIOS, and disabling devices I don't use to free up IRQs.
