For nothing more then informational purposes, here's a graphical timeline of Microsoft's Operating system release dates. You may find some use in this, you may not.

"invasion of the body snatchers" Hey very true about the auto updates, I remember when there was an issue w/ viruses' being contracted through windows update, if I remember correct, it was in 1999. During the ME massacre
-
When automatic update's came in last week and installed IE 8, I had more then enough calls to take up my time, people wanting to know if that conflicker was ruining there system, of course who knows whether that is even true or not, none the less it sure seems as if lots of people are having stability issues with Vista since IE 8 was let out of it's cage. I know this for certain it did make simple web browsing slow to a creeping halt on a Vista Ultimate system here. The very minute it was installed, I haven't done anything about it yet, but seriously caused major slow downs while trying to brows an already "goofy" Vista system. You almost can't brows, it's like my bandwidth went to the dirt.

computer wont boot up after verifying DMI pool data screen...
mudmanc4 replied to monkeymasta's topic in HELP!
lol Sounds like fun, been there myself. So what happens when you boot to the installation cd ? -
That was my bad, I glanced at it and didn't notice that the 8 something was the upload, wow, awesome !!!!!!
-
Thats still hell and high water from 22/5 , the modem I'm guessing , was not the problem. You should be getting at least 15-18 down. Have you shut all that "antivirus/ firewall " stuff off " and done a speed test ? I can't recommend any antivirus software, I don't use them on any of my windows machines, I don't need them. Just a firewall.

computer wont boot up after verifying DMI pool data screen...
mudmanc4 replied to monkeymasta's topic in HELP!
This sounds as if the driver that was installed my not have been a driver at all, is it possible that you were re directed to another download, and what you received was something malicious ? Either way, your going to hav to get rid of it. Whatever it is. Place the operating system disk in there, and boot up, when you get to the installation screen , you should be asked if you want to install, or repair, it's going to look like it;s installing a new OS, but as long as you chose to repair, then you should be ok. Try that, if you can't figure that part out post up, and I'll post the specific steps. -
I'll put some in the fact they havent changed the bootfile in the modem to your new bandwidth allocation, most of the time, this is what happens. All they have to do is reboot the modem from there server w/ the updated file, and your in business, may take as long as 2 minutes . lol

You have a legit XP cd, and the sticker was on the machine, but the machine was stolen ? I'm at the beginning of installing, where it say's it wants the key, now, if I could get the thing to go that one little step further, I could find the key from within the OS, there's several ways to do that. So whadaya do ?
-
Yea, plus maybe just totally uninstall it, and all of it's components, then re install it, if something broke in the software side, this may work.

Like you said, least it's cleaned up now lol, feels good doesn't it. My desk gets so bad in just a days time, it's layered, I'm serious man, right now there's a MB I stuck a proc in today balanced on top a box from a server board, thats sitting on legal papers, next to a coffee cup, mixed in a baseball cap, and a jeep magazine and OS disks , open container od blank DVD's with a bag of sunflower seeds laying across wires I have connected to an old iBook I was using to transfer data from here to there, ..should I go on ? I mean shit, this is a daily thing, I get it right every day or so, the BAM ! shitz all over the place :haha: The wife just left outta here, she sat on my lap and said " lookie the fire hazzard again " :haha:

Right, as far as I know, you must have a business name to place the account in, but if that's what you really want, then there's always ways to accomplish that , legally as well. Check this out.

Try different ones, when used them , for the most part , files that pertained to "faster " connections worked better , not sure why because I'm not on that end of things, but they did, so throw a few different files at it, and use the one that works the best, but keep in mind that your connection isnt always gonna be th same, there's so many variables, like what time of day , different times, more people are on the net, so obviously it will get a little clogged up if you will, so that it for what it's worth. Glad to hear that your speaking to the "tech's" worked
-
Hell yea, ! Are they sending someone out to check the line ? Just because it's a bigger number, doesn't make it correct. Some places will show you a different (hgher ) speed score , because they know that's what you want to see, so this in mind.
-
Ok then. What was your speed before the change in bandwidth ? I have RR as well, this same exact thing happened to me , people here that remember will testify to this. Do yourself a favor, call tech, before you call, get rid of the router, plug directly into the modem, just make sure your firewall is on. Then when they start w/ anything other then "I'm going to restart your modem " you tell them to send you to level 2, you have already been through this, say something techy, ( like " the dns server isnt propagating , and I cannot get to a website unless I type in there IP adress ") That will throw them and they might send you to level 2, for the most part , the people in level one, can't do much more then grandma, ok ? No insult, it's just that that's there job ok? So when you get to level 2, tell them that you need them to do a reboot on your modem, something isn't working on your end, and you cannot get it to lease you an IP, talk kinda fast like , if your not real fluent, they'll think you know what your talking about lol ( not that you don;t ok, just make them think you know your shit, so you don't get read to out of the book. They will say , " I don't see anything wrong here, maybe just several modem reboots " ( they can see that, it's logged) no one cares though, when they say that, then tell them , " yea, something isn't right " tell them a tech was on the street, and said there might be an issue w/ the port going to your house, or drop, they'll send a tech out to check for leaks, and run a test from the port. They'll also ask is it just the internet or the TV as well, say well yea, the TV "tiles" sometimes , all channels, not bad , but maybe when the weather is windy , or wet " , and this will get them to put that on the order as well lol But she will say something like " they have nothing to do w/ each other " , but this also indicated that there is a possible line issue, grounding, broken insulation bad card in the node , who knows lol So in essence you instigated a mid scale service call on the lines and the local node/ drop, ect. maybe. In the mean time, watch your bandwidth go up, maybe not all crazy like you want it, none the less. Watch and see. whatever you do , don't say anything like AT ANY TIME, " my speed is slow, or it's not what I'm paying fr, they will automatically stop what there doing , and tell you that 60-80% of what your bandwidth allocation is, is fine, they cannot promise any more then that. Do that, just read what I wrote a few times, and be confident, let them do all the talking, just sit there and listen, make them do it all. Acting as if you know there is an issue, and you know what your talking about will get more attention then the kid that calls and says " I'm trying to play WOW , and my ping times are bad, there kickin my arse " lol,, thee used to dealing w/ all that , so blind side them ! ok, make this call tomorrow, and see where it takes you, there expecting you to not notice anything , so make sure you have your head on straight before you call. Then we'll get to the rest, you may have to call several times to get some attention, this will give you practice on how to talk to them to get what you want

What exactly did you do , when you say you did " that " lol

Have you power cycled your modem since then ? Or even logged onto the modem 192.168.100.1 ,and setting the modem back to factory defaults, then restarting it, this will allow the server to load the proper boot file in the modem, might want to start there, then goto the router and set up the security there, just change the username, and or password to something you'll remember , but not something anyone else will . The router IP is 192.168.0.1 , and the default name is "admin" and "password" is the password. Then make sure port 113 (ident port) is closed, and make sure you cannot be pinged. Those are the basics of securing your connection.
-
How long go did you upgrade ?
-
What about changing the username and password from the defaults on the router ? And has the speed been slow like this always, or is this new ?
-
Have you made any changes to the router from the default settings ? Just to clarify, what OS is running ?
