ispgeek Posted October 29, 2006 CID Share Posted October 29, 2006 I'm looking into buying a cable modem in the next couple days... any suggestions? Before you buy make sure your ISP charges for them...if not, get theirs...that way if it gets damaged or goes bad...they pay for it. Most cable co's do not charge for modems any more...and you will have no speed or reliabiliy advantage to owning your own.
Ryan314 Posted October 29, 2006 CID Share Posted October 29, 2006 I have the linksys dcm-202 and its ok i guess. But ive had it since i got cable so i wouldnt know if somethings wrong or not

ispgeek Posted October 30, 2006 CID Share Posted October 30, 2006 I know that Cox in most parts of the country does not, nor does Bright House Networks.. I'm sorry that your cable company charges...he should still check with his cable company to make sure...he may very well be surprised. Speed is determined by the bin file as programmed by the provider. Signal issues that affect the performance of the providers modem will also have the same affect on the privately owned modem. Additionally there is no warranty for lightning damage through the mfr. If you have the providers modem you worry about nothing....if it dies, gets destroyed by lightning or surge its covered...plain and simple. The bottom line here is that if his provider gives the modem without charge he should take full advantage of it....if not...then purchasing a modem is just fine...but there is NO advantage to the consumer owning his modem if the company provides them for free...despite what popular forum myth may be... rushonbye Posted October 30, 2006 CID Share Posted October 30, 2006 Any Motorola in the 5100 series would be what I recommend. Avoid Toshita (Toshiba) and Terayon modems as they suck IMHO.

Amen there - like he said avoid Toshiba (no longer manufacture modems, but theres a gagillion out there still). 1- Motorola SB5100 - 5120 2- D-link or Scientific Atlanta
pitbull481 Posted October 30, 2006 CID Share Posted October 30, 2006 i had LINKSYS BEFCMU10. went out after a year and a half later. then i went out and bought a motorola sb5120. i got better speeds results and so for still running great (i always have it on), had it for over 2 yrs i always had Comcast for my isp
TimPawlak Posted October 30, 2006 CID Share Posted October 30, 2006 yeah, it DOES depend on what kind of modem you have... i have tries linksys and motorola... motorola is the fastest so far *only recieved around 2.5mbps with linksys on my 4 mbps connection"
REV0LUTI0NIZED Posted October 30, 2006 CID Share Posted October 30, 2006 I think the Motorola modems are more superior. Ive had a Terayon modem, Scientific Atlanta modem, D-Link modem, and Motorola is by far the best out of all those, in my experience.
TimPawlak Posted October 30, 2006 CID Share Posted October 30, 2006 haha, i didnt know a couple of those modems existed =)
