Blunted 2 ;I think I could underclock mine down to 350 but I don't think it would go lower. But you win because I'm not going to try. Btw FAT_Phil is working on an old one that is 266 but he doesn't have it online yet as far as I know. -
InfiniteZero;coknuck's link should allow you to use the Windows XP installation CD.I don't now how to access them but it should have drivers on it.I thought drivers would be installed during the installation.Go into your Device manager & try updating the drivers. I'm familiar with 98 & ME but do you have an options, cabs or installation file inside Windows XP? Also if you describe how your PC is now partitioned maybe we could help. You say you have 33G in an old partityion to reallocate.I'm not sure exactly what you mean.Like is this data you want to save or is this just the old leftover partition you want to get rid of?

Here's an easy way to get some e-mail information if you use Outlook Express.Just right click the e-mail select properties then details.

InfiniteZero;I hope someone that knows XP can help you.Surely there is a way other than using an old 98 boot disk to reformat XP. If you are going to use a floppy then in BIOS(before Windows boots)In your case the Dell Bios area .You should have some kind of boot order. If you normally boot from your HD it should be first in the primary order. You need to change this to the floppy first if you are going to use the floppy:CD first if you are going to boot from a CD.Then reboot. I am going to WARN you in advance if you use the 98 boot disk & delete your partitions with fdisk then your OS will be gone.Whether this actually erases the data I have some doubts but you will no longer have access to it.Reboot.Then fdisk again setting up new partitions the way you had your old ones. Then format each partition. Then do the XP setup or installation.I'm betting you have a Dell ghost or clone disk so follow Dells instructions on using it. The link below has some information you should read & a zip file I posted for a Windows ME boot disk.It will do the same thing a 98 bootdisk will. http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-12472.0 In Windows ME in My Computer in the file pull down I have a format option .Does XP have this?

dman58;I did some web surfing on this .Theres a lot of information Heres some of what I found. The first link explains why you get the blur & a way to correct it some. http://www.theimage.com/photography/photopg18.htm These 3 are about lens type enlargers. http://photography.about.com/library/weekly/aa073100a.htm http://photography.about.com/library/weekly/aa073100b.htm http://photography.about.com/library/weekly/aa073100c.htm This is some info I found if you had photoshop or a program that could use this method(I copied& pasted the quoted information I can't sat if it works): "The trick is (and it's not my invention) to upsize your image in a few steps, increasing it's size by 10% at a time with bicubic resampling turned on. I'm talking about Photoshop BTW. I can not explain why, but this process does an amazing job versus just trying to double or triple the size of an image at once. Like I said I did not loose much detail and images did not become blocky. Once you try this process and if it works for you, you could create an action in photoshop and assign a function key to it, so you can upsize any image by 10% at a time by simply pressing a key. the 10% method is the method recommended by adobe people" This is a link to the Adobe Forums there are several so try a few & see if they have some better answers. http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html I don't have the software in this link but if it works it might do what you want. http://www.imagener.com/cgi-bin/Track.cgi?TrackKey=ILL9&File=/imagenerunl.html I did DL & try the program below: http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/ Image Analyzer Make sure & DL this plugin also "fractional interpolation".Then put it in the plugin file for this program. Then try your resizing using it.I tried it with a B&W I had & it did a lot better than using resize in another veiwer. The fractional interpolation is in the plugin pulldown of the program window.

jeffwalker9999;I might take you up on the jasc paintshop but I have dial-up & 107 MB DL's don't work too well. dman58 ;php is pretty good with this stuff so he's probably correct.I think you have the same problem I have when you enlarge it enough you get bigger & bigger digital "squares". If you convert the photo to a .bmp it will help a little because a .bmp has more bytes. If you have the actual photos or can make good copies A good photography studio or lab that has "mechanical" enlargers & other equipment can do a lot. It might be more than you want to spend but is an option.

FaT_PHiL ;I know my PC is picky about the exact display adapter driver it uses.So I'm betting the Unofficial service pack changed the drive or some of its settings. When you run into something like this it's always good to do a scanreg /restore.That will get you going a lot of times. I used one of those unofficial service packs onetime & it fixed some things but messed up more. They usually don't have an uninstall either. You might be able to get rid of most of it by removing it from Control Panel add/remove programs. If the scanreg /restore doesn't do this. You can also select remove for the "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 & tools" this will give you the option to repair IE .Choose that. Since the mouse had some problems you might reinstall its driver too.Same for the monitor.

coknuck ; I like free stuff too.I already have the second link but thanks for posting it someone else might not have it. dman58; I don't think there is any way to clear ir more than the "sharpen" features of the program will.I think the problem is not enough pixels to work with. I don't have one of the expensive programs like Photoshop it may have other features to correct this.Maybe some Photoshop expert will post.

coknuck: Thanks for the 100-downloads.com link I think its going to be useful to me.I put it in my URL file. I'm DLing the Faststone Viewer & I'm going to give it a try. I now use Ifranveiw which I'm satisfied with & would recommend too.It sounds like the features are similar in both. But the proof is in the using So I will see which one I like best.

Supreme1 ;I hope this is what your asking. In a window like My Computer(Explorer) etc .Select editSelect all then you have several options ;You can select copy in edit & this will copy all the files. Then go to where you want them & Right click or to edit again & select paste.this will copy the files to that folder unless they are restricted files . Another way is to create a folder where you want the files. Then in the folder you want the files from edit select all the select copy to folder if you want the files in both folders or move to folder if you only want the files in the new folder. You do have to do this in each folder you want to copy.If you want to you can just copy the folder & put it in the folder you want it in.Then when you open the new folder the pther folders will be there. If you don't want to leave the folders in the old location you can either select cut after copy or go back & delete the old folders.

FaT_PHiL ;When you reboot without the boot disk or without anything in the CDROM drive does your PC say" No Operating System" or something to that effect? I think thats what it should say after what has been done so far.If you do have an OS & it boots to it DON'T Fdisk it since you don't have an Windows OS installation CD.If you have an OS there is a way to try a "dirty Install" from inside Windows. So STOP here if you do.If that is the case post & I will give you some instructions for doing this. Since you probably don't have the Windows installation CD that came with the old PC. You are going to need Windows full installation disk with the product key.Thats the legal way. If you have a method to obtain a copy with the product key some other way it will work but I can't legally suggest that. The Dell you have might or might not work to some degree.I had one of these for a Compac I used in my IBM one time that worked. The drivers were wrong for the most part though.Basically these are what are called clone or ghost disks. The startup or boot disks have a mini virtual OS for lack of a better description. With the Windows one you can Fdisk more than one partition even with FAT32 you just have to do it a certain way & reboot a couple of times. The way to do this is delete all the partitions .Then reboot.Next create a primary partition .when it asks if you want large disk choose Y(yes). Then when it asks if you want max size N(no) then put in the size like 1/2 or 3/4 of the total size if you want more than one partition. Then esc & select to set the partition active.then esc & reboot. Now Fdisk again to create the other partitions Chose to create logical dos partitions & create one or two adjusting the size you want. After this you can Format each one but you only want to do this with the startup or boot disk for the OS you are going to use.The reason for this is Format creates the comand.com& maybe the autoexec.bat & config.sys for that OS. I think the reason it stops at 84% the BIOS may be the other 16% that seems like a lot but is the only reason I can think of for why it does't format100%.

FaT_PHiL ;I did some checking on system requirements. This PC should be able to use either ME or 98. I guess with bad RAM it might do this.If you were able to use the PCdoctor77.zip I posted it has some diagnostics that you could check the RAM with. I have a couple of questions. When you fdisk to partition the HD do the partitions shoe FAT 16 Or FAT32 or neither? Are you setting the Primary partition active with fdisk? Are you using the Large disk option? If yes have you tried not usinf it? If you don't use the large disk option you can only use FAT 16 but this can be changed to FAT32 after Windows is loaded. If this works & you end up with FAT16 partitions I will give you some instructions to change it with Windows ME.Windows 98 has a converter. Heres the system requirements I got from MS but I don't see a problem I just thought you might want to look at them. The minimum hardware requirements for Windows Me include Pentium 150-MHz processor or better

jeffwalker9999 ;I think we pretty much agree on the next step. Its kind of fun seeing if someone can get an old PC going. It seems like the only problem with this one is it won't format & has a couple of worms that the AV won't get rid of. FaT_PHiL didn't seem to be able to get rid of the _RESTORE folder but this worked great for my OS. Now the _RESTORE file stays at zero kb. The FAT32 is limited in its Max partition size but I think you can create as many partitions of this size you want up to the size of the HD.With FAT 16 I think the max partition is 2G.php posted 8G as the max for FAT32 I didn't check this but it sounds correct. Since I use ME & it still has some DOS capability I use commands where I can.I specially like the MSDOS.SYS edit because it let me eliminate all the windows logos on boot.& gives me a menu which I can select safe mode If I need too.It also reports some errors if there are any on boot.Like if settings have changed .

I'm not Catholic so I don't observe Saint Patrick's Day.If you read the history this is an anti-protestant holiday. At least origionally. In Ireland some protestants wear orange on Saint Patrick's Day at risk of being shot by the IRA.The IRA seems less active today than it once was with all the other terrorism. I actually think the majority should rule in Ireland & if they want it all Catholic it should be that way.Let the Protestants move to England. This is my opinion & I'm a Protestant. Or imigrate to America where we allow all religions.Sometimes at our peril.

FaT_PHiL : Looks like you have tried my suggestions to format & its not working. You didn't say if you were able to DL the PCDoctor & if it would work on your PC. I would try what jeffwalker9999 is suggesting."Go to harddrive manuf and get there util / disk and format / low level format the drive with it ." I'm guessing a bit on this but maybe the amount of RAM is too low to support Windows 98se or ME.I think you have one of them on the HD.Since one of them was installed on it .The PC can't put what it needs in RAM to format the HD because the RAM is too small & you get the internal stack stack error. My second guess on this is the clusters on the HD are corrupted & full even though your PC isn't telling you this.So only a complete erase of the HD is going to fix this. Then you can fixdisk & format. A question is this PC supposed to be capable of using FAT32 or is it so old that you need to partition with FAT16 to make the HD work? jeffwalker9999 : I'm going to take a look at Hiren's BootCD 7.9 .

Dark_Matter : I went to the site I don't remember if I saw a DM initials come up.I went ahead & registered at the site .They have a challenge that works with my E-mail address some way.I'm not sure exactly how it works.Anyway the bowling game is fun .After I registered I could look at the top scores list .Almost all 300's so I won't be on it any time soon.

Dark_Matter ;thanks for the link.I went over yesterday & kind of got the feel for it.I.m fixing to go in a couple of minutes .I didn't register but I will use md for my initials in the open lane.

FaT_PHiL : If you delete the primary partition you will lose all data or at least access to it on the disk.If you have a full Windows CD you can put Windows on the HD with & there is no data on it you need .I think I would try this.It might let if format with the startup disk after you delete the primary partition you will need to fdisk another new one. On the passwords like iI posted I don't think ME has an administrator password unless it has ben setup for remote access.Typing .pwl in search should show the passwords I think I don't have any in my Windows only BIOS ones in my IBM so I can't test this .If .pwl turns up anything just delete it. When you get the C:> prompt type dir /w to see exactly how your _RESTORE is named if it has caps or not then type ATTRIB -H -R -S C:_RESTORE at the prompt I put more in the previous post but make sure it is spaced the same.It has been awhile since I changed mine so you may need to do this from inside Windows with the MSDOS Prompt in Programs .Try to del _RESTORE from there then create the new Text Document _RESTORE make sure you don't leave the .txt in the name only _RESTORE. Try this zip file .DL it to a Temp folder then extract it to a floppy. Then reboot with the floppy in the drive. It is PCDoctor It might only work for IBM.If it does load the diagnostic screen use the Alt key to get to the pulldown menus & then use the keyboard arrow keys to navigate.Pull down Utilities & Select Full Erase Hard drive.Warning this will remove all data from the hard drive. With it clean you may be able to format it.

"parents. love 'em hate 'em, stuck with 'em"
cholla replied to nanobot's topic in General Discussion
Both mine have passed away my dad in 1980 & mt mom in 2002.I wish both were alive today.I won't go into it but they were not always ideal parents.I got along with them better after I left home.By the time my mom passed away we actually got along pretty well. She mellowed a lot with age. I personally decided not to have children .I beleive the Earth's population already has too many people.I feel sorry for those being born now & their children & grandchildren.Because by that time there will be 18 billion people or more on Earth if it keeps expanding like it has.Heres a quote I like "The end of living .The begining of survival." -

If you go to the link & have dial-up take a coffee break while it loads. A cool pic I believe it was done with mspaint .Some of the posts below it sure didn't.I went to the link of the artists site where he explained how it was done. The only place he "cheated" were the cartoon or animae characters he screen shot them .pixilated then sized them etc so they looked right in the drawing. That's not much considering the picture.

brock01 : I went over to the earthlink site but didn't find anything to help.It had edit under the weather info but I didn't have access to it.Being a non-member.I didn't have any of the edits on the left like your screenshot.Do you think it supposed to change the clouds in the background? I'm betting its not.Or are you talking about the information on the right automatically updating?

I did a search for this problem.there seem to be several causes & solutions. Here are some links about the problem & solutions. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000492.htm http://help.lockergnome.com/lofiversion/index.php/t41509.html http://www.windowsnetworking.com/nt/registry/rtips65.shtml

I know I'm double posting.I just want to seperate them because both contain a lot of information. FaT_PHiL : The first part has information on passwords.Do you want or need to save any data on this HD?If not then you might try to delete all the partitions with fdisk except the primary. Then follow the format instructions below.I'm putting in more than one set of instructions because some of them conflict on just how to do this. The .txt file at the bottom I copied from my Windows ME. To remove a name from the list of remote administrators Open Passwords properties in Control Panel. Click the Remote Administration tab. Select a name in the Administrators list, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion. Notes If there is no Remote Administration tab, the computer is not set up to give others access to your files. For information on allowing others to manage your files, click Related Topics below. If there is no Administrators list on the Remote Administration tab, your computer is not set up to control access by using a list of names. For information on controlling access with a list, click Related Topics below. You must have at least one valid entry in the Administrators list for remote administration to be effective. Another way to open Control Panel is to click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. If you don't see the item you want, click view all Control Panel options. This is MS instructions .You probably already know this. How to Format a Hard Disk After you create the partitions, you must format the partitions: 1. Restart your computer with the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive. NOTE: If you are using a Windows 95 Startup disk, a command prompt is displayed and you can skip to step 2. If you are using a Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Me Startup disk, select the Start computer without CD-ROM support menu option when the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed. 2. When a command prompt is displayed, type format c: /s, and then press ENTER. This command transfers the system files and should only be used when you format drive C (or your "active" drive). For all other partitions, type format drive: (where drive is the letter of the partition that you want to format). NOTE: If you receive a "Bad command" or "Bad file name" error message, you may need to extract the Format.com tool to your boot disk. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER: extract ebd.cab format.com After the Format.com tool is extracted to your boot disk, type format c: /s t a command prompt to format your active partition, or type format drive: if you want to format a partition that is not your active partition. 3. When you successfully run the Format.com tool, you receive the following message: WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format? 4. Press Y, and then press ENTER to format drive C. 5. After the format procedure is finished, you receive the following message: Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)? NOTE: This is an optional feature that you can use to type a name for the drive. You can either type an 11-character name for the drive, or you can leave it blank by pressing ENTER. This set of instructions contradicts some of the above. Format the partitions. After creating the partitions and making sure the primary DOS partition is active, and rebooting to the floppy, an experienced tech might assume that the Windows Setup would format the drive. Not so. That has to be done manually. And, by the way, It cannot be done from "4. Minimal boot." Issuing the Format C: command there results in the following error message: Invalid media type reading Drive C: Menu choices "1. Help" and "2. Start with CD-ROM support" do allow formatting drive C: without error. So, reboot the computer to the floppy. Select "2. Start Computer with CD-ROM support," and format the C: drive as follows: A:> format c: Do not use the /s (transfer system files) flag with the format command. Win ME does not support it (by the way, Full Versions of Windows 98/SE will not install if it is done). Also, the SYS command results in an error message.
