fonfixer; Welcome to the forum & thanks for the contribution. If I termed anything wrong in the descriptions above please let me know. What I put above I think is pretty typical for those of us who can only get dial-up.We should be so lucky as to get fiber-to-curb .The one I called an A/d jump is correct isn't it? There is a Hyperterminal to telesync test I have a topic in the forum about. For some it shows A/d converters on their loop.Sometimes more than 1.I wil get a link to the test & post it here. http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=4277.msg39109#msg39109

I was out in the Arizona desert looking up at the sunset when I tripped over CA3LE writting the script for the site. That's a better story than I Googled for it.

t1wireless;I did some surfing so I could have an example of the terminal boxes.I think it gives the you qualify for SBC because it is their test.If you don't have SBC or know you are too far then their sales pitch is wrong. But it gives you the results for at least some indication of your line stregnth. http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=12373.msg123451#msg123451

These get talked about in Dial-up & sometimes DSL.I will work to improve this topic. Here is what I have for now: If you have underground phone wiring in your neighborhood, as opposed to phone wiring that runs in the air on poles, then you will frequently see these little boxes all over your neighborhood -- one for every two or three houses or so. A typical box in the southeastern United States might look like this: This box is two or three feet (about a meter) high and perhaps 8 inches (20 cm) square. What runs into your house for each telephone line is a pair of copper wires. What is running through your neighborhood is a thick underground cable containing perhaps 25 or 50 pairs of copper wires. The little green box is a place where the 50-pair cable pops out of the ground so that a phone company employee can splice into it. They happen to be building a new subdivision nearby, and here is what one of the boxes looks like during construction: You can see that this is a very simple installation. They've taken the cable, removed its outer protective sheathing to reveal all of the wires, and then spliced into several of the pairs for the two or three houses sharing the box (the small clear plastic blocks are the splices). Small two-pair cables run underground from the box to the houses. Sometimes the splices won't be quite this simple -- there will be a plastic or ceramic plate inside with a junction block instead of direct splices. So where does the 25-pair or 50-pair cable come from? If you hunt around your neighborhood, you will find a larger box that looks like this: SAI telephone cross connect box Also called PCP box This box is perhaps 4 feet or 5 feet high (1.5 meters). A larger cable with hundreds of wire pairs runs past this point, and one or more 25-pair or 50-pair wires gets its start here. Inside the box is a large punch-down panel where phone company employees attach each pair in the smaller cable to the correct pairs in the larger cable. The larger cable will often get its start at a box like this: This is the A/D jump I beleive. This box is about 6 feet (2 meters) high and 12 feet (4 meters) wide. You can see on the right that this box also has its own power meter, and therefore has power (unlike the previous boxes, which have contained nothing but passive splices). Inside this large powered box are digitizers. The pairs from each house attach to the digitizers so that all of the phone calls in the area can be carried on a much smaller set of wires. This box might accept a number of larger lines (like T1 or T3 lines) carrying voice channels, and the digitizers break down the multiplexed lines into individual pairs. The multiplexed lines might travel down the road as copper, fiber optic or coaxial cables. Eventually the multiplexed lines arrive at a switch which might look like this: This building has no windows and is perhaps 50 feet (15 meters) square. This would be the CO terminal or switch. In some cases this is inside your telephone company offices.

t1wireless ;Your CO is your telephone companies main terminal It can be a remote terminal sometimes but thats not the big green boxes. The best way to find you line or loop distance is unfortunatly calling you phone company & finding someone there that can tell you. They should know but finding a tech that can is sometimes not as easy as it should be.The dslreports test shows mine at 16800 ft but the phone company says 26800 so I accept their distance. If you can try one of your modems a your cousins to see the connection speed.I had an external 56K modem that would never connect faster than 28K even when the internal connected at40K so it might be your modem. The more than one a/d jump is supposed to be a problem on speed so that could be it.I'm all copper to the CO so I haven't had to go through the analog to digital conversion before it gets to the CO.Thats what the a/d jump does. Were you able to use the Hyperterminal 'data line quality test" I posted? It doesn't work for everyone I know ROM_DOS was able to use it & boywonder did.MUFFIN couldn't . I really don't know if it would improve gaming I don't online game. But latency is the main problem with gaming from what other posts have said. I was reading a couple of articles that said you get between 46 ms & 100 ms with dial-up automatically no matter what. And this applies to each modem so teaming doesn't help .
-
t1wireless;I haven't done teaming so I won't be much help on that.I think most ISP's use V.34 standard for upload instead of V42 bis or V.44 like they do for DL.So this limitts teh upload speed some.Still do you know why you are only connecting at 26.4 K instead of 37K to 40K? Those are my average connection speeds sometimes higher.I'm a pretty good distance from the CO 26800 FT.

I start with Windows standard in Windows ME then custom color it like I want it. A couple of things Screensaver select none,In effects I have everything unchecked but use large Icons; In Web uncheck"Show web content on my active desktop"; In Apperance use the system fonts for everything or any font that ends in .fon in your font file the .TTF true type fonts have a lot more bytes.IE & most browsers only use TTF but I use Trebuchet MS for web page font & ORC A Extended for plain text font. These are the least byte TTF fonts in the choices. Under Latin based this setting is in Internet Options Fonts In FF the font settings are in toolsoptionscontent & the advanced too. I'm not sure if this is available in XP but try High Color(16 bit) in Settings in Display

dlewis23 ;I read the posts & saw wyantm06 had used delete & was able to get into his BIOS.Sometimes others read or search the posts so a hint or two for another PC could help them.|3v|lon3| Does seem to want people to Google first personally I have used several search engines & still not found an answer to some questions. Most can search best on the serch engine they like best Google,Yahoo,MSN,0r even Ask Jeeves.I use a IE based program that has 11 search engines you can check but you can only use 4 at a time.Meaning it will search 4 simultanously & load 4 web pages. It is Solway Search.

cholla & ROM_DOS are green. I guess we need a color chart.I don't know if there is one I will have to find out.

Thats what this topic is about problems with tech support. Some stories will be terrible some funny. Swimmer did what I do keep complaining till you get the results you want. A good rule of thumb is never yell or hang up.This confuses the lower level techs because they are used to making customers angry.Sometimes I think they are trained to do this. When you hit the I can't do that answer then calmly ask to talk to that techs supervisor.Keep doing this till you get to a management level that the tech you are talking to can do what you ask(or at least tells you they can. Also ask their name & employee number &extension number. There are sure a lot of Bob Smiths & Jane Does living in India these days.

Try the Mega codec at this site .It should let you play most of the flash type players. http://www.codecguide.com/features_mega.htm

F1 is what my IBM uses to go into BIOS.Another way that works on my PC is Hold Ctrl when you power on your PC this gives a keyboard stuck error which activates the option to go into BIOS.On mine you have to enter the administrator password if you want full access to BIOS.

Hi all;I will probably move this to dial-up but I wanted to put it in general first to get more response. My ISP blocks ping & tracert so I can't use them for tests. The Round Trip Time (RTT) in the NDT test is faster with a smaller RWIN(all other settings being the same) but the testmy DL test is slower.I'm posting the results (just a small part of the NDT). I have done this several times & it consistently does this. Anyone able to explain this? RWIN 5840 Web100 reports the Round trip time = 508.95 msec; the Packet size = 1460 Bytes; and No packet loss was observed. :::.. You should like this .s1 my last months fast food was about $8.00 I like Weinersnitzel Polish sandwiches ocasionall & I haven't found a Polish sausage that tastes the same as thiers'.For the most part I cook at home.I would rather have cold leftovers from home than most fast food.It has been 28 years since I ate in a McDonalds I got food poisoning twice from 2 different McDonalds. My brother got a bad case from Taco Bell.So its a lot healthier not to eat at the fast food places not to even get into the calories. That probably explains why at 52 I only weigh 190 lbs have a 34 inch waist not much of a gut.I did let myself get to 205 once but the all meat Atkins' diet took care of that. It took about 3 months to go from 205 to 180.

FGOKURULES;Just a couple of posts were off.Why don't you resize the avatars you post to fit the allowed forum avatar size so they can be used? This only applies to animated avatars. They can only be used if they are 100 X100 pixels or smaller .If you put in a larger animated .gif then when you use it as an avatar it only uses 1 still from the .gif. You can post them in Additional Options larger & they are animated but not as an avatar. If converted to code a larger animated .gif will also work as a sig. The larger cattoilet didn't animate correctly so I removed it.

I have a tech story about SBC.I called to ask about their "data line quality test" & was told all they had was ont they could doo & it would tell them if the line was "OK". That would be the result they got was "line OK'.After talking to 5 or 6 techs at SBC & several calls including a couple where they transfered me before I could stop them to their Yahoo DSL division in India. The Yahoos in India really didn't know what I was asking for. Finally by accident the transfered me to a tech center in Little RocK with a maybe they could help me.They knew exactaly what I was asking for & gave me a toll free number for the test. Its the one I posted that is done from Hyperterminal. Most of the so called SBC techs had never even heard of the test & I'm talking about American ones.So much for training.

Elite.Pete ;Yeah I'm still on dial-up but I don't have a problem with that.I tweak it to the max & it works pretty well for dial -up.I still think that the phone companies could make dial-up work a lot better over a POTS line. But they are in the business of selling DSL & they want to encourage dial-up users to go that way.If they could stop dial-up entirely I think they would. To make their voice lines be less congested.

coknuck ;Heres one you can try.
-
This will be added to there have been some requests for these.I still recomend finding one for the specific modem you have .(If possible). Just click & open to veiw or save if you want to DL a copy. btw it may take a couple of minutes for a .pdf file with dial-up but the .txt file will be pretty fast.

Other Speed Test Sites - But TestMy.Net Still Is The Best

justinlay;I saw some in the post for toast.net btw it would probably take me a week to do them all with dial-up. -
I have a freind that works at a scrap metal yard maybe he could run the electro magnet on his crane over the HD. Aggr3 ;I have a degauser on my monitor menu but I don't think I can get it to my HD. Seriuosly I would like to see what data that an expert could get off a HD that had just been formatted & was supposedly erased.
-
I don't have any of the retreival software so I can't say what it would find.Have you ever used any of the DOD level retreival software to see what it found on an "erased HD"?
