I missed the reason you started this thread, but I am assuming that you tried to run the Broadband Reports tweak test. Try this link: http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks

I see, how about a North Dakota University of Pennsylvania NDUP (I should not bust on North Dakota, I am from a place just to the South of there...)
-
Not bad. Curious, is IUP in Indiana or Pennsylvania....

Manual says it should be http://192.168.1.1 to get to your diagnostics/set-up. Link to Linksys site specific to your router: http://www1.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=68 Here is the direct link to your manual: ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befw11s4ug.pdf Pay special attention to page 31 of the pdf document. You need to uncheck the "Block WAN Requests" check box under the 'filters' tab. Remember to go back and re-check that box when you are done with your testing, it is safer to let your router drop the ping requests.
-
What brand router do you have? Each one may have a different IP address. Have you tried the manual yet? It will tell you how to unblock ping requests.

can i record streaming material from the net?
dn0 replied to bent240LV's topic in General Discussion
In order to protect myself: The show I record advertises gear intended to record their show for listening at a later time. So I am doing the same thing, for my own personal use, otherwise I would never hear their show. (I work during the day, therefore must sleep at night) disclaimer: I would never dream of recording copyrighted material with the intention of re-distributing it in any way. -
can i record streaming material from the net?
dn0 replied to bent240LV's topic in General Discussion
I use it for recording an AM show from a webstream, so I am not recording at very high bitrates or frequencies. But, I do have the choice to record on up to 96khz at 768kbps. That is a very high rate, maybe you mean 128 kbps, not khz? edit: I re-read your post. They are talking 192 and 128 kbps. I believe most standard stereo broadcasts are around 44 khz. WME 9 is easily capable of that. I would just experiment with it, there are alot of functions that I am clueless about. I use the trial and error method....... **info not inteneded to assist in the recording of copyrighted material.(f off riaa-mpaa) -
can i record streaming material from the net?

I use Windows Media Encoder 9.0 (free from Microsoft) to record an overnight AM radio show. I discovered this capability by accident, it will encode from sound card to disk drive (or anywhere you want). WME 9 is quite a useful tool, I originally and still do use it to stream my TV card output to my wireless laptop. Work great, watch TV out on the deck if I want. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx **info not inteneded to assist in the recording of copyrighted material.(f off riaa-mpaa) -
Looking for Wireless Card (for Desktop); Budget $20-$35

Great idea building your own antenna. Don't forget you will need a cable to connect your antenna to the pc card. What I was reading mostly just showed how to build the antenna. -

I agree with peepnklown about the pci card. I would preferably use that as a opposed to the usb adapter. There are definitely antennas you can buy, but most decent card antenna combos put the total over your $35 limit. (except the no-name brands, like Linkskey, who is that ? Why not D-Loink? ) That is why I did not bring that up. But, if you do go with the cheap card and antenna combo, and it works well, let us know. There are some very cheap antennas, just be sure the connectors match up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=list&SubCategory=342 -
Have your dad try Everest. I have never used it, but I know others on the board have. This may help tell you if the temperature is the problem. Read more: http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en

Welcome to the forum, Gryphon. I posted 1 example of a Linksys 802.11b USB 1.1 adapter. I have never used a USB adapter myself, so I am unsure about the lag. There are not a lot of decent adapters below $40. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124103 The link below is Newegg's full lineup of wireless adapters ordered by lowest price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=list&SubCategory=31 -

hummingbird. hmm, hummingbird. ? Must be on your PC only.

I am not exactly sure, just-. It is my work PC and the i.t. guys said the EV-DO will be active by December. I happened to notice a speed increase yesterday and looked at the diagnostics and it showed the EV-DO as active (in the past it always said CDMA active). The fast service seems spotty so I am sure the upgrade is not yet complete. As for the upstream, I was getting 80-100k earlier on a local site, but at the time I posted here it was not looking so good. I am home now, and the EV-DO is not working here so I am unable to try any more speed tests. edit: found some numbers on there site: Mobile Broadband Sprint PCS Connection Cards

I have noticed the EV-DO service coming and going since yesterday, they are in the process of turning it up apparently. I usually only get 80kbps down, and less up.
