confusion re: firewall and antivirus interaction
resopalrabotnick replied to onestep2's topic in General Discussion
don't get me wrong, running multiple av's and firewalls shouldn't make it unstable. it's just a waste of resources to have multiple things to do the same thing. -
i'm going to use it as a secondary fallback, but the part about google looking through my mails for keywords to add ads, i don't know. what other statistics are they collecting in the process? they say no person ever sees the mails. i dunno. too agressive advertising.

:haha: you told him to check the manual for default values. you bad, bad person.

confusion re: firewall and antivirus interaction

you should be able to use the best features of all programs, and it is a savings on resources to not run two things that do the same thing (2 av components for example). to ensure a little more safety on the av side you can set the av you don't use memory resident to do a full scan say at 3am, that way you get the double coverage that should catch anything the live monitor missed. monitor the first full scan to make sure it doesn't recognize the definitions of the first av as virii. normally av's are now told to ignore stuff like that, but you never know. -
true. linux will use less resources on a laptop. the reason being that it won't be able to talk to half the components in the laptop. drivers for linux in general is a pain in the ass, but drivers for laptop hardware that is even more proprietary are a cast iron bitch to get together.

Help with speeds please!

not at all. a phone line in between would explain the problems.... -
you don't tweak the modem when you tweak your connection. well, you shouldn't, at least, since that is illegal as hell. (and easily detected by the isp, they tend to come down on you like a ton of rectangular building things) all tweaks offered here are solely reversible tweaks to your operating system. specifically setting up the values that windows uses for certain details of the network connection to optimize it for your internet service. read the 2 links in my sig, and post any info you collect here. tweaking is a science, but one easily picked up. some say it turns into an obsession. or an addiction. anyway, i need to run, my dl was a few k short of average just now....

phone outlet?!?!?!?! i do hope that there is an ethernet connection to the downstairs one... is the plug exactly like a phone plug or is it wider like a network plug? -
so if they ask you to do a speedtest on mydirecway, go to the dish and stick some crumpled aluminum foil on it to the point that the signal is just strong enough to run a garbage test. sounds tto me like they /want/ you to come up with a bad result. so give it to em.

so has anyone posted anything on connecting to an unknown cisco router? seems not. so let me help you some more. go to the router. find the model number. post what the hell you're trying to connect to. and since there seems to be no great interest in connecting to small business or larger routers here, i suggest you /do/ take that model number and stick it where the sun doesn't shine to the cisco site and look up the info. and i would have bothered to see if there was a quick setup guide and pointed you to that to follow the steps suggested by cisco if i knew what router you were sitting in front of.
-
ah, so you expect everyone that has ever connected a pc or other device to a cisco router and used the cisco software to configure said router to post their experiences. then you will go and see if any of that info can be applied to your router. at least have the courtesy to p[ost the model router you are trying to hook up to so those that have irrelevant info don't need to bother replying. and btw, in all this time you spent arguing that you expect your information predigested and spoonfed you could have downloaded the manual pertaining to your model number and found the needed info.

basically the ram is usually so-dimms and the hdds are 2.5 inchers instead of the usual 3.5 inchers on a desktop. but since the exception is the rule and everything that can go wrong will go wrong (and don't be fooled if it doesn't, it's just waiting for a more inconvenient time to go wrong) you should go to the manufacturers website for your laptop and armed with the model and serial number browse what they offer, if they give any limits as to ram or hdd size and so on. take the time and write their support e-mail to please give you a list of compatible upgrades or at least the specs i mentioned. edit: and 3 cheers for you for worrying about having a legal windows. that's the way to do it right.

for starters, read the 2 links in my sig and post all info. -
get the hard drive supported by your laptop. open the case using a screwdriver/crowbar/cutting torch/all of the above. replace existing drive. of course, if you laptop lets you, some do some don't, place the harddrive in an extra bay or the bay occupied by the cdrom. it's actually not really different from replacing a desktop hdd, just that the connector has the power pins together with the data pins.

where are you physically located? the freezing sounds too long and infrequent, but it is something like the problem you get when the rwin is too small... read the two topics in my sig and post all the info, that will tell us more about your connection and what could be wrong with it.
