CA3LE got a reaction from iyukon in Include results before I signed up
    Hi Angela,
Usually you have to query the Connection ID separately to look at the results you took when you weren't logged in.   Having said that... I added a feature for you.  By default it will now include the tests taken on the same connection.  It will highlight the result yellow if it's not logged by username.  (see the screenshot)   You can also toggle the feature on and off below the results list. (see the other screenshot)   Hope this helps.  Please note that only works on the connection that you're using, if you share the page others can still only see the results logged by username.  If your IP changes those results will remain but may be lost unless you know the ID.  My next database upgrade will track your IP changes so after that you won't have to worry.  Until then, stay signed in and you'll easily track your results.     Thanks for the suggestion, please let me know what you think. - Damon - TestMy.net

CA3LE got a reaction from iyukon in Stop attacking me
I get this one often... I think that people research the attacker and end up finding information I have listed, then they use my contact form for some reason.  Maybe they think I'm the ISP. All I know is that lots of people send me emails like the following.

    Hi Adi,
You've probably mistaken the tool that's helping you research your attacker for the attacker.  I run TestMy.net and have no connection to that IP address, other than providing information about who they are.  You probably were researching the IP and found information like...   Research IP 221.15.163.82   Good luck tracking them down.  I have to deal with hackers like that on a daily basis, I know your pain.  Your attacker is from China, your best to find a way to block the attack; if you have a hard time contact your ISP.  Contacting the attackers ISP in China (or Russia) is usually hopeless.  Which is dumb because it degrades their network as much as yours... attacks usually take bandwidth, the Chinese and Russians weaken their own networks by not working with us.   Probably about 90% of attacks on my servers come out of China or Russia.  It's not because the Chinese and Russians are out to get us... the hackers are often in different countries tunneling in.  Those countries just don't seem to care if their computers attack Western computers and networks, they don't do much to stop it.     If you're getting DDoS attacked your host may be able to filter your traffic through something like Cisco Guard.  I've had my host do that a few times for me, it does a great job.  It allows good traffic to continue flowing while stopping the attack.  Last time I had it enabled it was blocking a little aggressively and denied some genuine traffic.  But it still helped to mitigate the situation.  Your host should provide this for you free of charge.  Stopping attacks like this makes their networks faster and better... they need to help you stop it, the data is flowing through the network you essentially rent from them.    --- if your host won't help, find a new host.   - Kind Regards, - Damon

CA3LE got a reaction from Gio Bacareza in ISP not stacking up? Just blame the speed test.
    Hi Ken,
I have users that regularly pull over 600 Mbps (>70 MB/s). My servers are ALL very well connected with at least 1000 Mbps symmetrical.  My main server has dual symetrical 1000 Mbps connections connected into Softlayer's multi-homed network >> http://www.softlayer.com/about/network/carriers. I'm in all of their datacenters. I've got a lot of bandwidth to back up my application, before anything... I make sure that my bandwidth is premium for my users. It's a bandwdith testing application, to be real.. it has to be on the best connected networks.  Research my host and you'll find that I'm very well connected and peered.   ... My main server is also very powerful with SSD RAID5 and 24 cores. Overpowering my end means that when you test you're guaranteed a private core, memory and plenty of bandwidth on tap. I'm running at a small fraction of my servers potential... and then I have 5 other servers on top of that to choose from.  All dedicated to the task of speed testing. https://testmy.net/mirror  -- 10 more mirrors hosted by other people too (new project, offering it up to anyone with a web server, you should host one at your school if you can). https://testmy.net/make-a-speed-test   I suggest testing to some of the mirrors to see if there may be a routing issue.  If you get limited speeds similar on most servers you might want to look into the problem locally. Either on the client machine or network. Often tweaking TCP settings can improve connections that fast. For Windows, which is the worst culprit, search for TCP optimizer from speedguide.net (I think it's) https://speedguide.net/downloads.php. For other OS search google for gigabit TCP tweaks for your specific OS. Note that TestMy.net is sensitive to many issues that other speed tests don't detect. It's purposely designed to be a hard test to ace... try to score as high as you can, then compare your subsequent results to your own average, highs and lows.  Don't expect to pull your full speed on every connection type you test with... especially gigabit and faster.  I can't... but the tools still makes the health of your connection very obvious in my opinion.   TestMy.net is more than just an Internet speed test. I've seen first hand where it scored my girlfriends macbook under 20 Mbps on a 50 Mbps connection... I swapped her hard drive for an SSD and upon reboot her TestMy.net score maxed out my connection. I purposely tested around to prove a point. No other speed test picked up on it... even though my download and Internet surfing performance were obviously degraded. I wrote every line of code and I don't even know what truly makes my test different, it just is. Some known differences between how I do it and how my leading competitors do it are touched on at https://testmy.net/ipb/topic/28902-why-do-my-results-differ-from-speedtestnet-ookla-speed-tests/.   If you like my life's work, please share it... it's totally word-of-mouth. - Damon

Hi Spoiler - well, I've no previous experience of satellite so I'm on a learning curve. The installation engineer returned on the second day to see both the original very slow speed results and the much improved ones. He put the difference down to my specific link not being fully set up by the central Nordnet team for the first results, but time will tell. I'm now beginning to test more frequently and seem to be averaging around the 10Mbs so from a previous 3Mbs maximum you can imagine I'm well pleased.
I don't download much in the way of files and rarely use youtube so can't help out there with experience.
Confession time - the main reason for switching to this satellite system was for improved VOIP calls to family across the Channel and the big pond too. Previous calls were plagued with drop outs and 'stammering' conversations that really wound me up - so a change was required. So far, so good.

CA3LE got a reaction from SlowBarn in TestMy.net Beta program
I have A LOT of upcoming releases, many of which are going to be built around a new concept.  Because there is so much core programming being changed I'm going to do something I've never done.

I normally work on the site live and things are released as I write them... if your in the right place at the right time and you pay enough attention you can see me building sometimes.  Well, I really feel that the version I have out right now is INCREDIBLY stable... I don't want to disturb any testing or use of the site.  So I'm going to offer a beta program for those who wish to join.

To join, vote Yes on the poll above. I'll add you to a special member group and you'll be emailed with updates.  You'll also have an option in your menu that will allow you to switch between beta and release.  Smaller updates will be globally available but the major ones will be held back for the beta testers to play with first.  This will help find bugs before public release.  When I'm satisfied with the code I'll offer an option for a while to the general public to turn on the beta... after general public beta testing I'll then release it to the final.  We'll then start the whole process again for another round.

This is going to be really hard for me to do, I really hate to hold new stuff back.  But maybe doing it this way will help me spend less time on bug checking and more time of actually building.

I'm one person.  Your help with this is appreciated.  Everyone who has ever submitted a comment... you've already helped build this site.  I started with a vison but you guys expanded it.  If I'm going to keep bringing those ideas to paper I really need your help.  I have at least a couple thousand hours of programming planned just for the next 3-6 months. I need to use my time effectively, spending hundreds of hours searching for bugs is not using my time wisely.  Register (If you haven't already), vote yes above and I'll email you later when I have more information. Then, you can tell your friends that you helped build this site.

    Thanks

I have been using DSL 10+ years. Before that I had dial up and then Huges Satellite internet.
I know a little about troubleshooting the issues plaguing my connection but I want to learn more. I need to find the program that will run on android, windows, mac or linux that will provide indisputable proof that issues plaguing my connection are outside my house ie:Windstream's responsibility.
Mostly I ignore my poor DSL service because 1. They have a monopoly here as they also own the cable company. 2. It works just enough to get by most days.
However they are suppose to upgrade me to 24 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up soon and I thought I would see how well it is currently working. Not well at all so I don't know what it is going to benefit me to have increased speed.

IMHO nobody makes better computers/OS than Apple. I've used them since 1988. And every one I've ever had was a fantastic machine that lasted for years problem free. And like you said, it just works. It hurts going to the office once a week (I'm retired now) and using the PC. And my wife's work Dell laptop she uses is only a year old, and it's just a so so laptop. Her 2006 MacBook Pro is still tooling along great. When you amortize the real costs of a Mac over a PC including OS updates, and security software costs for the PCs, the Macs are are a bargain when you price them with equivalent hardware.

Why do PC's rule the business world and the personal computer world..? My Dell laptops have done a great job, even the 2002 still works great, of course it's obsolete by today's standards.  I like changing hardware and software on my desktops ^several PC brands) just for the experimentation kick, and I'm just your averaged user, not a geek (no pun intended). Seems some Apple users have a 'one track' mindset, or they are so technically inclined they disregard the PC as solid and functional. The PC made the computer World (Microsoft and Intel) and brought Apple along with it. I may own an Apple someday, but my first choice is the 'top' of the line Alienware machine..Apple doesn't excite me, like a PC does.. if you want a Cadillac work-horse,,get an Apple, you pay the price, ..if you want a work-horse, get a PC, and have some fun. PS. this is a friendly chat, and by any means is not to diminish any computer owners preference.. have a good day!....

I wonder why you're getting that error.  I've never seen or heard of that.  Does anyone else see that?  --- it's the same address you end up at when you do a download test... it's obviously not really missing.

The multithreading currently only works with the download test... I know, the upload results while you have that turned on say otherwise... I just haven't had a chance to fix that.  I'll be looking at rebuilding the upload test to allow multithreading soon.

Seems like bandwidth shaping is becoming common practice. Using the two testing methods can help users discover this about their connections.  I still believe that your true download speed is the speed rated by TMN's default, classic method... multithread is nice to know the capabilities of the connection but the linear load (as I guess I'm calling it) is a better judge of the real download speed you could expect to see in a normal transfer.  Many issues that slow users down are often masked by multithreading, so I plan on leaving the linear method as default.

... 85.5 Mbps down... very nice.  Here's what I just got with the same test.

And dude, my results with the upload test suck too. But unfortunately it's the truth.

I look at the activity monitor and see that I peaked twice as high as that number during the test.  But if you look at the entire transfer from start to finish... the number output by TMN is totally on the money.  It sucks, but you have to take the entire result into consideration.  I started at 200 kB/s, 600 kB/s, 800 kB/s, 1 MB/s, 2.2 MB/s .... that's just the numbers I saw come in on a 2 second polling... average them... I arrive at 960 kB/s.  Trust me, TestMy.net's calculation is much more precise that averaging the 2 second polling off my network controller.   ... I don't like the numbers it tells me sometimes either, but they're always accurate.

Sometimes I get better upload speed on this connection...

Realize that the end time of the test come before that /results address is executed.  By that time your score already calculated and about to be logged to the database... any lag will not effect the outcome.   Furthermore, the end time calculation is server-side.  As soon as the transfer is complete and that part of the program starts to execute... the calculation is actually done.  It might say calculating on your screen but trust me, once you see that... it's already done microseconds earlier and nothing can change the result.     ... in the past it was an issue, I rewrote it since.

My aim in the rebuild of the upload speed test is do bring the TiP system into the upload results and finally add a progress bar.  I think once you can see the details of how the data flowed during the test, the minimum speed, maximum and middle average... it will open some eyes as to why the scores here are so harsh.    ... it evaluates everyone the same... if there is a problem with it, me and other people wouldn't post some of the insane scores we do... also realize that the transfer file size maxes out at only 33MB, once that size is raised the accuracy for faster connections is raised.

... Many people hosting online video streaming use the upload test here because they say it's a quick and accurate gauge of the true maximum upload bandwidth potential in a video stream.  They take the number output by TMN and adjust their stream just below that and it works perfectly for them. That way they get the highest quality their connection can handle.  ... they tell me that other tests out there can't be relied upon.  So it must be doing something right.

... I'm such an MS hater these days.  But seriously... am I wrong?  It's like they're trying to get in the way of their own success anymore.

My father-in-law just got a Levono Win8 craptop.  Nice specs, touchscreen - i7... blah blah blah ...I couldn't even get it to do anything.  Wouldn't connect to my wifi I assume because it wasn't registered but to register you needed the wifi.  Seriously MS, do you have marbles for brains?  It had a telephone registration but I looked at him and said, "Come on dude!  Just trust me and get a Mac!  You'd get it, open the box and be ready to rock in like 60 seconds."   -- he gave in and took that craptop back.  I'm not saying it was a bad laptop, it had potential.  But the operating system was seriously holding it back.

I have like 5 wifi networks in my house... I also created TestMy.net so I'm pretty sure that I know how to get a computer on the Internet.  It just said "Limited Connectivity" on every network and kept asking to register over the Internet!  lol  hello!  catch 22!

He was thinking of putting Windows 7 on it... okay, so now we have to buy new laptops and spend more money to put 4 year-old operating system on them.  Yeah, that seems really efficient... efficient for Microsoft's pocket!  My brother-in-law didn't listen and got a PC which came with Windows 7 and Toshiba gave him a free upgrade to Win8.  He upgraded and none of his stuff worked anymore.  The backlight to his keyboard, the function keys... important hardware stuff just simply wasn't supported even though Toshiba told him it was totally supported.  He also was getting errors and freezes all over the place.  He went back down to Win7 and is happy now.  What a headache though.  Could have saved ALL of that time and effort and got an Apple to start with.  All that time on the phone dealing with that BS, could have been spent smelling roses or finding a cure for cancer.  I dunno, just not on a tech support call.

Microsoft will figure themselves out.  They need to stop trying to be different and cool and get back to the core of what made them popular.

One windows device that I thought was awesome.  The Nokia Lumia 1020, however I haven't played with one.  I'm sure that it feels retarded being a Windows phone but the camera is insane.  41MP and a real xenon flash.  Does it perform well as a phone, I don't know.  But that sensor, 41MP... let's put that in perspective... the Hubble Telescope has 64X less resolution.  It has so much resolution that you can digitally zoom 4X and still have lossless 1080P quality.  Too bad they ruined it all up and put it on a windows phone.    -- still, an amazing jump in technology for sure.

After he got his Macbook Pro (which was maybe a couple hundred more than the other laptop). It booted up and he was on the Internet within I'd say... 90 seconds (so I was wrong... it wasn't 60 seconds, lol).  I put in his info, installed MS Office and synced his iPhone for the first time... he's been glued to it ever since.  He thought there was going to be a huge learning curve but in reality it just works how you'd expect it to so I think he's really happy with his choice.  He'll have far less headaches and be more productive for sure.

If you're in the market for a new computer.  Choose the one with an OS that's leading the way into the future... not the one that wastes your life with technical issues.  I'll leave it up to you which is which.     ... and remember, saving money is only saving money if it doesn't waste time.
