I have heard using more then the supported amount of ram can cause glitches glad you got it sorted

I thought I'd post a solution to a problem I had recently - it might help someone else. Last year I was getting 30+ Mbps down with Comcast using their "Boost" option (costs a bit more than regular). Then this year, it dropped to 10Mbps. Of course I complained to Comcast, ran all types of scans, checked my PC with HighjackThis, etc. Nothing. I have a Dell XPS with a mother board capable of handling 24GB of RAM. I had 15GB in it but then took out a 1GB stick to put in a 4GB stick giving me 18GB of RAM. I also have a bootable second hard drive "F" with Win 7 Ultimate but my primary "C" dive has Win 7 Home Premium.

The puzzler is the secondary "F" drive was still getting more than 30Mbps down but the primary "C" drive was only getting 10 Mbps. What's up with that? I tried everything until I discovered that Windows 7 Home Premium can only "handle" a maximum 16GB of RAM - Win 7 Ultimate can "handle" 192GB of RAM. When I dropped my RAM back to 16GB my speeds returned to above 30Mbps on the primary C drive.

The lesson for me is that if you put more RAM in your machine than your Operating System can handle, you might down grade your speed when you think you're helping.

The test method here is completely different. Some factors that may slow down your performance when testing here (that aren't always detected by other speed tests) include... Incorrect MTU and/or Rwin settings and slow hard drive performance.

Another factor that effects all speedtests is the route to the server. If there is congestion along the route then you'll see slower speeds than you might expect. We run our dedicated servers through one of the most powerful and well peered providers in the country... so if there is congestion the clients host is usually to blame (Shaw in this example).

Speedtest.net's servers are usually so close to you that route is rarely a factor... but I personally believe that people are only lying to themselves when they test off such close servers. It defeats the purpose of this type of test.... do you want to know what your speed is to your neighbors house or do you want to know what your speed is to a normal, more realistic location.

If you have a minute read this. Pay attention to the final paragraph.

You're only as fast as the weakest link between you and the test server. I have done everything on my end to ensure the best possible testing environment now it's really up to the ISP's to get their customers routed through better providers and bigger, more adequate pipelines along the way.

Speedtest.net isn't wrong by the way... I just think that they test people under unrealistic circumstances.

If you're host is doing things right you should be able to max your line out here from anywhere in North America...

Just don't worry about it... if you really want to I can merge the accounts. But since you don't have very much forum activity yet I don't think it's necessary.

The broadband.gov test is also a flash based Ookla test... therefor you can put that in the same category as speedtest.net --- it's made by the same people. Off the subject but someone as MSNBC recently misquoted me saying that I thought the FCC testing was sound. Totally was taken out of context. I actually should have been quoted saying something like, "Some of their techniques are sound but with flawed test methodology the information there can't be trusted." -- I let it go because of the amount of quality traffic they sent me. He pretty much used me to write what he wanted, I have email proof of this from our conversations... I know now to watch my words when I'm talking to the press about anything. Because they'll twist your words on you. I love how all the negative information I gave was omitted. What's their agenda? But, that's another subject all together.

You need to worry more about rootkits than viruses. I install rkhunter on every Linux box I run and it has always worked well for me. http://rkhunter.sourceforge.net/ Can do a few basic things as well to keep the script kiddies from attacking such as changing ssh port and disabling root, locking root access to IP things like this

Actually, I've never added providers in that way. I've added forums for providers but if the detection fails... S.O.L. -- But I will be fixing the host detection issues very soon, I've had the fix on my radar for years now... it's actually pretty expensive to get consistently updated ip information. I've been detecting it on my own forever now... but as you've noticed it doesn't always work, some hosts sit behind unresolvable proxies and such...

In the past, for about two weeks or so, I made/ran a system for allowing people to enter that on their own if detection fails. But I scrapped the idea, I don't like having to ask my users to do the tasks that the website should already do on it's own.

I've just about finished the prerequisites on the site that will lead to the eventual release of this update. For anyone else waiting on this, sorry for the delay... soon... I just didn't want to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on an IP database subscription service before I was ready to implement it. (That kind of information doesn't come cheap.)
