CA3LE reacted to mudmanc4 in Microsoft Trying to corner the entire market for generations to come.
Stand up for your freedom to install free software

The following is a public statement, open for signing. For more background, please read our more detailed explanation of the issue at http://fsf.org/campa...restricted-boot.

Microsoft has announced that if computer makers wish to distribute machines with the Windows 8 compatibility logo, they will have to implement a measure called "Secure Boot." However, it is currently up for grabs whether this technology will live up to its name, or will instead earn the name Restricted Boot.
When done correctly, "Secure Boot" is designed to protect against malware by preventing computers from loading unauthorized binary programs when booting. In practice, this means that computers implementing it won't boot unauthorized operating systems -- including initially authorized systems that have been modified without being re-approved.

This could be a feature deserving of the name, as long as the user is able to authorize the programs she wants to use, so she can run free software written and modified by herself or people she trusts. However, we are concerned that Microsoft and hardware manufacturers will implement these boot restrictions in a way that will prevent users from booting anything other than Windows. In this case, we are better off calling the technology Restricted Boot, since such a requirement would be a disastrous restriction on computer users and not a security feature at all.Source

This should be considered a joke ! Microsoft is seriously pushing the boundaries of monarchy.

For one , what would any other reason so much attention be going to this if MS did not have unscrupulous measures in mind when they attempt something such as this.

Forcing all manufacturers to use there logo is just horrendous , let alone the possibilities as to hat they may do with the manufacturers they use ie: Intel , and other major brands.

Pay close attention to this , and if you care what so ever about being able to have a free and open market for hardware , and or software , you might do well for future generations to spread this as far as the Earth is a planet.

No more Unknown hosts. I've taken care of it.

... Because the data is being stored a little differently in the database for this upgrade it will take me some time to gather some data and flip over the FULL conversion of this upgrade. For now, if you were being detected as "Unknown" the data is being stored in the old table a little differently..

The hosts with underscores in the name most likely would have returned 'unknown' before. After I turn on all the features of this upgrade (as I said, after I gather sufficient data) the hosts will be displayed by their correct name, minus underscores, cut offs and other things I had to do to make the data compatible with the old format.

    nJoy!

I would feel ripped off too. You're paying for internet, not a local area connection in Atlanta... right? This is just the kind of information that I try to educate people on with this website. I feel that this is happening allot more than people think and in many cases ISPs are not delivering what they're quoting.

This is also why I don't have servers every 50 miles. I don't feel that testing so close is an accurate depiction of your internet connection. A true test of a provider is the quality peering relationships that they have. Some providers love sending users to tests that draw information down the street... then they say, "well, there you go... it's running correctly." -- How is that running correctly if you can only get your speeds to their servers... stupid. And you're smart for not falling for it.

funny... In years past many more ISPs used to send users here... until they realized that my methods expose their weaknesses. ... don't get me started.

I'm sorry, but if they can only deliver 5Mbps when you barely leave the state... they need to sell their service as 5Mbps. Who cares what speed you get in ATL, how often do you think you're on a server in ATL? And if they can't peer well with my provider, they suck. I get my bandwidth from the largest names in the game.

So, yeah... I think you're being ripped off, given the information you've told me.

how is that a real world circumstance though? the cpu and browser are factors for download speeds even on a phone aren't they? i'm pretty sure thats why this site exists. so you can know your actual speed not some fictional well if everything was perfect you'd get this. if you want to stroke your e-peen more be my guest there are plenty of flash based tests for that

    that's my personal opinion

it could be a peer issue, myself and a few others are also having issues reaching our max speed, so to avoid the peering/routing issues that can arise CA3LE is in the process of setting up another server for us to test from that is hosted in a different location

First off... Welcome to the site!

We don't call people "n00b" around here. I think that's so rude when people do that, you're just trying to learn something and ... "NEWB! STUPID N00B! neeeeeewwwwB!" --- jerks.

    <a href="http://www.giganews.com/?a=testmy" rel="nofollow"><img align="right" src="http://www.giganews.com/banners/testmy/300x250a.jpg" alt="Giganews Newsgroups"></a>Now, to your query. Yes, I see my max speeds every day. Here's a download off usenet (giganews).

First, it depends on who's serving you the file. So you're downloading it off a crappy or overloaded site then you might not see your full speeds. But the benefits of a faster connection extend beyond the transfer speed. Having a faster connection will make your overall experience online snappier and less stressful. Go ahead, downgrade your service... then upgrade it to their best package (most decent providers will let you do this and downgrade back to what you were on without a hassle, cable providers like Comcast are always willing to upgrade and downgrade your account... whenever). You'll see the difference... even if you don't download any files.

Also, I don't see any tests taken under your account or IP address. Take some tests and let us know what your package is (and OS) and we'll try to help you get the most out of it. Depending on your setup there may be a few tricks.

Looking at your stats it seems like a slight drop... dont know about a 3rd. i would also recommend a larger test file. 15 MB is tiny for powerboost standards.

I finished the build this morning after picking up a few SATA cables and making some short brackets for the SATA Raid Cards.

Overall not bad, 16TB of usable protected space. Will be working on #2 real soon, probably after this ships and is all setup in the datacenter. Now I gotta build a damn box to ship this sucker.

    Here are some pictures:

EBrown: Already tried restricting the IP address/subnet to that. Doesn't work.
CA3LE: Saw that information on other sites too, doesn't work as you said with Windows 7.

Talked to my provider, he said earlier versions of Windows 7 have something in the coding that prevent access. They don't have a solution. He didn't tell me which later versions work. Although, he mentioned if a person has Windows 7 Professional, then can add another operating system like Vista or XP to access programs that don't work with Windows 7.

My easiest solution was to borrow my daughter's Blackberry with internet access. Just punch in 169.254.1.1, wham, right there, everything! Can even set AutoUpdate to 1 sec. Just love it when a tool works well in an unexpected area!

Probably have to make your network unsecured temporarily though for the Blackberry to access the location.

some of those are just standard tcp/ip modules that are installed on every windows computer with the exception of the Symantic Network Security Intermediate Filter Driver ( that one is from norton's internet security i imagine its a firewall ) other than that one nothing to be alarmed about
try http://10.0.0.1 thats common for a dsl modem, with an old router i had, my router couldn't automaticly reroute me to the modems page because they were on different subnets. try plugging your computer directly into the modem/router to configure it, it will be a lot easier to find your routers config page that way. once you connect directly to the modem/router in your local area network connection status you can see the gateway which is your modem/router and should be able to connect to that local ip in your browser

assuming your on windows XP go to the control panel > network connections

here are some walk through's once you get there

    right click hit status

    click details

    and there you have it!

Problem solved! Before buying a new modem, I decided to try one more thing. The network cable FairPoint sent me has a Y on the end, so it can be connected either into a network card or usb port. Their instructions said to use the network card rather than the usb, if one was available, so that is what I did. I know the net cards on both the desktop and laptop computers work, because I frequently use them to transfer files back and forth.

I tried connecting the modem through the usb port and then the email worked and the web pages stopped hanging. I reconnected it through the RJ45 and was back to the same problems. Although I had done it before, I tried a different network cable that I knew was good, and again had problems.

Now I think there must be some incompatibility between the modem and both of my network cards. Both computers are running Linux, so I don't know if there is some issue with the drivers that they will work with my router but not the DSL modem. Anyway, everything looks good when I connect through the usb, so that is what I will do.

Thanks again to everyone for helping me to troubleshoot this. I hope this discussion may be able to help someone else with similar problems.

speedtest doesn't usually pull accurate numbers for me.. take now for instance i'm having pretty big local issues here modem keeps dropping out, signals are bad.

so when i test at speedtest its as though nothing at all is wrong.. look

if i go by that then i'd never know anything is wrong with my connection. but the ISPs can't fool me... i'm going to keep having them come out and look into my issue forcing them to spend thousands until they fix it and give me what i'm paying $89.99 a month for, a good company wants a happy customer and i will be one when they fix my problems which they are trying to do

if i test to testmy.net or any other speedtest site that does not use flash i see results like

as you can see speedtest isn't even close. even if i test to a server over 1400 miles away on speedtest its still showing incorrect results

It could very well be incorrect mtu, rwin or. Other incorrect settings i've personally had issues like that where the network adapter was set at. Half duplex 10Mbit. Max and speedtest.net didn't detect it but testmy.net picked it up right away even a web browser could be the issue I can't max my connection with firefox but with chrome I don't have any issues

So yeah a few more particulars about your situation and we'll do our best to help you diagnose your problem

Btw sorry for any spelling or typing errors I typed it on my android ha
