Yes often defrag only takes a short time if windows says it dont need it , but I read somewhere frequent defraging places stress on the hard drive , it certainly raises the temperature on mine, any views on one long defrag or many short ones ? coz I dont know whats best in the long term, mind you I have never lost a H/D and one of my puters has a H/D 10 years old, and still running OK

I got to drop out of this, as it is now so slow , I cant open many threads , and my upload isn't uploading , like I klick on post and it goes after a long delay at 2Kb

thanks Mudmanc , so maybe 40K members wasn't such a good thing I did a test to BB reports and got this , Yeah crap for a 8Mb adsl sevice , but in reality I can only get 2Mb at best (line length & age ) I battled the price down to my old 256Kb service, so I ain't companing Pipex.com .uk

Xp pro only needs the original WIN Xp disk , mine is a home built puter , just glad I bought the Win Xp disk , and no I wont be buying Vista , well not for a few years The new hard disk is a good idea , I run 2 H/Ds both 7200 rpm x 80 Gb ,more than enough for my needs , the second ( in a caddy ) has my page file and backups on, and space for my saved files , for my next reload , if you have the Xp install disk, that is all you need for ASR , home i think is is a bit different from Pro , I have never run Xp home, I got Pro from a guy who paid the full $$$$ , then found his puter couldn't run it ($30 ) I defrag about once every month, along with a complete clean up,and move "stuff" (tech term ) that i need to save over to the 2 H/D

Lol I use Xp pro, so I use ASR backup from the first clean install , after I have made sure it had all I needed, then every 6 months or so , I save the files I want to keep, and roll back , only needs a few updates, then I am back up and running in about 30 mins. I can vouch for CCleaner, I use it about once a week, and backup the changes , but it has never failed me yet ,

Good luck Mudmanc , it worked for me with a modem driver way back , I still think it is a S3 driver , as I had a desktop in once that had S3 vid and the sound driver was Crystal/S3 , I noted on one site Compal/quantex made puters for gateway at one time

lol you are right on that , matbe this may be worth a try , find some audio drivers from around that time (2000-2001 ? ) gateway, dell etc, get as many as you can find, put them in a folder , then try updating sound card driver , in systems , then browse to that folder , and let it find it's own driver , note I have never run win.2000, only 9x-xp , something is ringing a bell in my head , S3 video and s/c driver , I will get back if I remember,
