  1. ok if that is the ISP then that is really good for a distance wifi connection. I would not worry about the equipment you have. As far as the gateway, if it is helping with the speed via caching the leave it. Unfortunately you are in country that just has a crap load of bombs dropped on it and their infrastructure is a little mess up. I would leave the antenna as it is.. you are getting 80% signal which is really good! As far as the antenna.. 24dbi is pretty "strong" most of the flat panel models are not going to be able to get that great of a connection over a long distance. So stick with what you have. You might want to try and power cycle the APs.. that might help with the speed just a little bit.
  2. If you are 100% sure.. and you have tried tweaking the connection.. the i would suggest replacing the router. Make sure that you dont have any funky QoS schemes set-up.. And if you plug directly to the modem do your speeds return to normal?
  3. GSM 16.4 That is what I have used.. It is pretty much the same codec, as far as i can tell, that ventrilo uses by default. I would be interested in hearing SPEEX 25.9.. I have never use it..
  4. first welcome to the site! What i am seeing is a lot of lag on the LAN side of things.. the tracert to 192.168.1.1, if that is internal like the AP that has the antenna, should be below 1ms just about always. Are they using dlink products for this system? if that is the case then you are going to want to make sure that you are not running on the same channel! 24dbi is a lot of power in one direction. I would also try downloading without the smoothwall machine there.. There have been other members here that the smoothwall has affected the performance of their connections. As far as APs working as clients.. it is more frequent than you would think.. With open source firmware and linksys hardware this can easily be done for CHEAP! You mentioned that the fiber network is pretty much non existant.. My guess would be that your backbone to the ISP is going to satelite which of course introduces tons of lag.. And with dust, the military, and everything else going on there.. the disk could be a little messed up.. Try a download test from on of the mirrors in Europe.. you might have better sauces.. https://testmy.net/mirrors.php Good luck and stay safe!
  5. haha good catch.. didnt notice that!
  6. yeah I can do that for ya..
  7. for some reason there are some routers out there that just dont work well.. I dont know why.. but it seems that some of them dont work well with the most up todate firmware from linksys. I ran into this with a team mates router.. So i went out and bought my own and have been using it ever sense. There are more advanced options like ssh, QoS, and security. Unless it is broken or you are willing to take the risk you "bricking" the router.. Since there seems to be some interest on this subject.. I will throw a guide together this week..
  8. sorry.. i am working on some stuff.. take a look in make it faster sub-forum.. they should be able to help ya out.
  9. I know that some of the bittorrent servers have been under attack in the past few weeks.. What do the seeds/peers look like?
  10. first read this: Supported Linksys WRT54GS v1.0, v1.1, v2.0, v2.1, v3.0, v4.0 NOT SUPPORTED * NOT WRT54GS v5.0 There should be a sticker on the bottom of the router so you can find the version there.. haha not a problem.. you want the http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/index.php?path=dd-wrt.v23%2F&download=dd-wrt.v23.std.zip standard version... Then you need to unzip it.. and look at the read me file. It will tell you what version of the firmware you need to install. Then log into the router http://192.168.1.1 and just do a simple firmware upgrade. Make sure that you are on ethernet when you do this! BTW this will void your warrenty if you do decide to go this route. I love the wrt54g with the dd-wrt firmware!! so many possibilities... You can always contact me on AIM for more help.
  11. I if you are having problem.. i would highly recommend dd-wrt.org 's firmware. It is very simular to the standard linksys stuff.. However, you need to make sure that it is compatable and that when you flash the router you void the warrenty of the product. I personally have had my router up for over 2 months with out a problem and no speed issues. I did run into an issue on a WRT54G 3.1 that has a simular problem on a insight connection.. upgraded to the dd-wrt stuff and everything was back to normal. If you are not a computer person you might not want to do this.. there are a lot of check boxes and buttons which tend to scare a lot of people
  12. This topic has been moved to Make it Faster.... [iurl]http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=12169.0[/iurl]
  13. post a tracert and we will let ya know.. tracert something in italy.. might be the network coming into the US.. for some reason it has been acting up in the past few weeks.
  14. Yeah.. but if you are remote.. and the DCHP client renews and then all of your port forwarding is messed up.. you are out of luck until you can get back local.
  15. Interesting little program.. downloaded it and ran it.. didnt seem to "help" my system all that much.. I only had like 5 errors.. Might help those who have really bad system slow down.
  16. Yeah i am going to go out on a limb here and say that they have stuff sitting around ready to host you on.. It isnt like the physically build the server when you order the package. that would be bad business.

    Need help!

you should be able to use the USB drive, if it is working, to install windows xp.. put the cd into USB drive and then choose the boot option when the computer first boots. there should be a selection for USB device.
  18. yeah that is one of those little details that no one really thinks about.. however, make sure that you assign a static ip address so that you dont loose the IP that the server is set on.. let me tell ya it is a pain in the ass to go and have to figure out what ip address it is on.. I normally assign my servers below .100 just to keep them seperate from the rest of my addresses.
  19. I think that the xps 200 is a laptop and the "top of the line" is the is the 600.. that is because it is the sff.. and they have had overheating problems with their sff in the past.. in fact, i thought we were talking about a laptop here, i would say away from the XPS 200.. it i just going to cause a cooling nightmare.. or move the computer into a different case..
  20. if you use the same codec as ventrilo uses the voice sounds 100 times better...

    bitcomet

do you have the client correctly configured? Like does to port get forwarded to the correct computer? otherwise.. you are pretty much discribing a NAT issue.
  22. yeah.. maybe by the time that the purchace needs to be made.. they can get the stuff corrected and have cards out that support the spec? I would be pissed if I bought one of those cards that are "HD" complient and it turns out that they are not!
  23. yeah pretty much that is the deal..
  24. I thought I just read something that no video card can output at true 1080i, HD, due to DRM and the fear that someone would "rip off" the creators of the media.. Might be wrong but i swear there was something just in the news about this.. I am going to have to do some research. Found what I am looking for.. http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=851
  25. I doubt that it would take like 10 hours to get it running.. that would make impossible to install on older machines.. it would take like 2 days on a 1ghz machine. If you installed all of the packages then maybe.. i know it take about an hour or so for a install of Suse 10.. with very few packages.
