is what you are trying to install a RPM? The command line is the best way to go about installing programs. Or install open suse and use YaST.

One other reason could also be just a low amount of available bandwidth at the provider side. I noticed on there there site that there data centers are rather small and could only be connected on 2 10gbps connections, that is a rather low amount for there number of servers. They could be pushing a high usage on there pipes which would really slow you down. Also for those prices, they probably don't have the greatest bandwidth providers, I know they do BGP which is real low grade bandwidth, which can/will slow down the results.

It was..... there latest build's have been pretty bad in the performance area. Ive totally just switched to vmware fusion for now till parallels gets some things fixed. Besides that i'm none too happy with them right now anyway. They keep buying up these good web site software makers one right after another. it seems like now everyone you go to is not called parallels (insert product name) if they buy cpanel i'm really going to be pissed.

a 1Ghz p3 screams on linux. Its designed to have a very low foot print, and be super fast on even slow hardware. If you have a chance I would check out opensuse 11, It looks really good.

Don't ever count on getting anywhere near 1gbps. because of many reason, mainly the hard drive can't transfer at that speed ever. and second the network will never let you download, or upload anything that fast. When you get a "true" 1gbps connection on a server your not getting it to be able to push information that fast, (because the hard drive just physically can't do it) you are doing it for bursting. Also you have to factor in the number of people downloading from the server you are trying too. And how much capacity is actually being used within the data centers network, as they don't have too much capacity for there data centers and the number of servers they claim to have. And make sure its not a shared 1gbps connection.

Its a socket 478. really no more upgrade possibility with that. AMD vs Intel... That would be intel all the way. For the past 2 1/2 years intel has spanked AMD up and down the wall, with everything in the house including the kitchen sink. AMD has totally dropped the ball there top of the line processor, can't beat majority of intel's core 2 duo and quad core processors. And what AMD has coming out over the next year can't even touch what intel has coming out. There new shanghai processors are only about 1/3 as fast as intels nehalem processors. There is really no reason why anyone should even consider a AMD processor right now. They don't have the performance, and can't compete on the price now with intels latest price drops. You can get a quad core harpertown not for the $500+ before, only $242 now http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117151 the new E8xx series is now under $200. quad core vs dual core vs single core.... Single core is out, with intel now making a dual core celeron. Dual core vs. Quad core, really depends on if you want to spend the extra money or not. They have gotten so much cheaper, that its starting to get to the point where there isn't a real reason to get a dual core, just go for the quad. Now if you will actually use it, thats a different story. For the most part, unless your playing crysis your not going to use all 4 cores in a game. Where a quad core really shines is when you are doing many things at once If you are going to or want to be doing a lot of stuff at once, and have many things open at once, you may want to go for a quad core, otherwise save the money and go for a dual core, but get some extra ram. At least 2GB. Either one you go with, they are going to both be really fast, if you pair them with a good amount of ram. And if you are going to do some gaming get a decent graphics card like a 8600, you don't need something too fancy.
